Ermm..do you mean "I appear to have made a mistake, please accept my apologies" or "Sorry!"??

AIBU to want to scream at people who say this?!

usualsuspect · 03/06/2013 18:27

It's mostly teenagers this say it, teenagers have always had their own speak.

Chillax

usualsuspect · 03/06/2013 18:28

Who say it*

flowery · 03/06/2013 18:29

YANBU, it's v annoying. DH says it purely to wind me up!

Bogeyface · 03/06/2013 18:32

Usual I think thats what irritates me most, I have only heard "grown ups" say it! I dont mind teens doing it, as you say they tend to have their own language!

My teenage pupils say fairly often. I really can't find anything annoying about it at all.

In fact I find it endearing when a teenager is willing to accept they may have made a mistake.

LoSiento · 03/06/2013 18:35

I've heard this said more often by adults than teenagers.

BadPoet · 03/06/2013 18:36

It's used in Buffy, therefore it's fine and YABU.

StuntGirl · 03/06/2013 18:38

As much as I love Buffy I cannot agree with your logic poet!

youmeatsix · 03/06/2013 18:43

"I appear to have made a mistake, please accept my apologies" Confused "my bad" sounds sooooo much better,

NumTumDeDum · 03/06/2013 18:45

Americanisms are a bit annoying when the speaker is not American. Dd was pointing out 'trash' bags earlier. I did get a little bit of irrational rage. Then had an internal debate about whether it was petty to correct. Petty won. Grin

Then had an internal debate about whether it was petty to correct

I regularly have that debate, but then I live overseas where everyone speaks differently to my home town...

JazzDalek · 03/06/2013 18:57

BadPoet Grin

It is Buffyspeak. I can't hate it I'm afraid.

DoJo · 03/06/2013 18:59

I think it's just a short hand for when it's not really necessary to fully commit to an admission of guilt and a heartfelt apology, just to acknowledge that you were in the wrong - accidentally pushing in a queue for example or failing to notice that you were blocking someone's view of a supermarket aisle whilst trying to work out which tin of kidney beans is better value - inconsequential issues. It doesn't bother me in context, but I don't think it's acceptable when a proper apology is warranted.

iamadoozermum · 03/06/2013 19:01

I said it in a job interview once! My excuse - I'd had DS1 by emcs a couple of weeks before and the interview process was all day. This is when I discovered that the mixture of painkillers, issues of DS's birth and extreme lack of sleep had somewhat addled my brain. Needless to say, I didn't get the job Smile

Fairylea · 03/06/2013 19:05

My now ex started saying this at 30 years old. I absolutely wanted to throw things at him every time he said it. Truly awful.

WMittens · 03/06/2013 20:05

Is 'mea culpa' more acceptable?

snooter · 03/06/2013 20:11

'mea culpa' is more acceptable because it means 'my fault'. 'My bad' doesn't mean anything. My bad what? Cat? Cooking?

diplodocus · 03/06/2013 20:12

Mea culpa far worse. Particularly when said smugly about an achievement i.e. "Oh was it you that got a double first from Cambridge at age 16? " "Mea Culpa" (said with a smug and mock humble smile).....
BLEAGH

snooter · 03/06/2013 20:14

I wouldn't say Mea Culpa as I don't really use much Latin day to day but I find it less irritating if I hear it. I'd say I'm Sorry, +/- That Was My Fault

SybilRamkin · 03/06/2013 20:14

I disagree with diplodocus, 'mea culpa' is a thousand times better than 'my bad', which makes me incandescent with irrational rage!

ChasingStaplers · 03/06/2013 20:20

Teenagers I could understand but I have only come across adults saying it.
Every time I hear it it makes me all stabby.

navada · 03/06/2013 20:22

I've only ever heard women in their 30's say 'my bad'

I just laugh.

AnnaFiveTowns · 03/06/2013 21:05

God, I'm out of it. I've never even heard anyone say "my bad" - on TV or in RL.

CatsRule · 03/06/2013 21:08

Yanbu...I cringe when I hear it...especially when it's from a 30 something HR person at work!!

OnTheNingNangNong · 03/06/2013 21:12

I used to say it as a cool teenager. It was also used in a rap by Ludacris, so it is acceptable for adults to use. Grin
