Ermm..do you mean "I appear to have made a mistake, please accept my apologies" or "Sorry!"??

AIBU to want to scream at people who say this?!

Obviously I was being sarcastic with the "oh I appear..." etc! :o

When kids say it I think it is short hand for "oops, fucked up, sorry!" but when adults say it there is an over tone of "Oh ffs, what?! Fine, sorreeeee!" in a very sarcastic not-really-meaning-it kind of way.

And dont get me started on Americanisms. I dont think a week goes by without me saying that we are English and therefore we do not have trash cans, sodas, cellphones or the like :o

Oh oh and another one....no DD we are not "bagging it" for lunch, we have packed lunches!

And further musing....

mea culpa is fine because you can use it to out fox the my badders! I can be an arse too, AND in a foreign language :o

Someone from MNHQ used it once. I was Hmm. Hate it.

ExitPursuedByABear · 03/06/2013 22:12

Although I want to say coronated rather than crowned.

humdumaggapang · 03/06/2013 22:13

A horrid americanism made its way here like so many others. My colleague (male, late 20s) has said it a few times and last time I said- sorry I didn't realise you were from the mean streets of LA or something to that effect .

Buddhagirl · 03/06/2013 22:15

Why is it cringe worthy??

ExitPursuedByABear · 03/06/2013 22:16

Because it doesn't mean anything.

Bogeyface · 03/06/2013 22:18

If sorry was required then an adult would say sorry. The fact that they dont means that either a) they dont feel sorry or b) they are as a thick as a plank!

As I say, different when teens say it as they clearly use it mean sorry.

"All good" has the same effect on me. Anyone have any ideas of where this came from?

Bogeyface · 03/06/2013 22:21

Is that "Its all good"? When something has been fixed?

OP posts:
Mandy2003 · 03/06/2013 22:24

Yes that one! Forgot the dreaded Its Grin

Bogeyface · 03/06/2013 22:25

ah...I use that......Blush

MistyB · 03/06/2013 22:25

I don't think it means 'sorry' or 'I am at fault' more 'I am acknowledging that fact that you think I have done wrong but I am not expressing remorse.'

WMittens · 03/06/2013 22:26

"last time I said- sorry I didn't realise you were from the mean streets of LA or something to that effect ."

I think I find that more cringe-inducing than "my bad".

Southeastdweller · 03/06/2013 22:26

I'd bloody awful, isn't it. Tolerable when kids or teens say it but anyone else, well they may be trying to sound as if they're on-trend, adorable, or whatever, but actually they sound like idiots.

FairPhyllis · 03/06/2013 22:32

It's a Buffyism, therefore YABU.
