AIBU?

to think that posters who use any variation of "if you don't like it don't look at it/buy it/just suck it up" are very silly

and should have a word with themselves?

Honestly, what does it add to meaningful debate?

Moominsarehippos · 03/06/2013 13:35

I need someone to explain what 'to do one' is exactly.

ICBINEG · 03/06/2013 13:43

YY minty could not agree more. And you can add the whole 'my child, my business' nonsense to the list. It is only not my business if it doesn't affect me....and as we share the same education and health service, most of the dumb assed decisions discussed on here DO affect me....

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 03/06/2013 13:45

'to do one' is to basically bugger off Grin

fluckered · 03/06/2013 13:46

please suggest another term so instead of "suck it up" to emphasise someone having a silly moan.

otherwise "do one" Wink

MardyBra · 03/06/2013 13:49

It depends what you're talking about.

If it's: "I don't like Coronation Street." Then fair dos.

If it's: "I don't like sexist posters in a shop." Then YANBU.

It depends if what they're talking about is offensive or harmful to anyone else.

Lottapianos · 03/06/2013 13:53

Completely agree Mintyy. I hate people who slap other people down verbally, it's no less rude than telling someone to eff off IMHO. Just because you don't have a problem with or don't understand the issue doesn't mean that the other person is wrong for feeling the way they do. And it just shuts down debate and that's surely not the point of a place like MN Smile

wigglesrock · 03/06/2013 13:53

Meh - there are as as silly as the I don't like it/ agree with it so it should be banned bunch.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/06/2013 13:54

I don't see many 'meaningful debates' here really. I see quite a bit of some posters using the most obvious ploys to disparage others who look at/buy/watch certain things though.

I often see threads stating, "I can't' understand blah blah... AIBU?" and I wonder whether it's worth replying to say, "YANBU to not understand but that is ^your shortcoming, not blah blah...". Those threads are usually crafted to give a verbal but pointed slap to a wide swaythe of the population.

I think, generally, we whinge and whine too much... much too much.

Mintyy · 03/06/2013 13:59

Mardy, I am talking more about the "I don't like porn" "don't watch it then" arguments.

OP posts:
Fenton · 03/06/2013 13:59

YANBU

I also detest 'get a grip' , 'calm down dear' and 'if that's all you have to worry about....'

ThreeDudesOnABus · 03/06/2013 14:00

Why?

Why on earth must we indulge every stupid little whine and demand?

Why can't we just say "oh fgs love, get a grip and a hobby".

Mintyy · 03/06/2013 14:01

I'm not talking about every stupid little whine and demand.

OP posts:
FreudiansSlipper · 03/06/2013 14:04

Your/my house/child your/my rules

do these people have a list of rules when you walk in to their house do they carry them around to show others if someone dares to break them

Fenton · 03/06/2013 14:06

Why can't we just say "oh fgs love, get a grip and a hobby".

because it's rude and unhelpful.

HTH

^ not too keen on that either Smile

MardyBra · 03/06/2013 14:07

Fair enough then Mintyy. Yanbu you just need to be a little clearer Wink

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/06/2013 14:07

I personally wince when I see, "So, dear reader..." or any variation of that.

LookingThroughTheFog · 03/06/2013 14:07

My personal favourite is; 'if you don't like X school rule, home educate then!' as if everyone must be well equipped and able to educate any child at any time, and as if entering a dialogue with the school if something seems off is a ridiculous notion.

MardyBra · 03/06/2013 14:08

I'm so fed up with the people handing out grips. How original.

Next time someone offers a grip, I might retaliate by offering a Thesaurus.

Thurlow · 03/06/2013 14:11

YANBU. My teeth get very itchy when people come on to AIBU threads and say "really? really? you think it's worth spending even a second thinking about something so petty and trivial?"

Yes, of course it is. It's AIBU. That's half the point of this whole site!

TinBox · 03/06/2013 15:39

"It's their money - they can spend it how they like!"

Well, yes, obviously. Of course they can. I'm not going to run up to them and snatch the money out of their hands - but since when was every single decision or action justified by the fact that someone can pay for it? I can have an opinion on it if I like. Paying for something doesn't magically invalidate everybody else's opinion.

Pagwatch · 03/06/2013 15:42

The 'here, have a grip' and all the variations are really dull now.

I love the people who turn up on a thread and post on it obsessively for ages in order to impress upon the op that she should get over it/move on/let it go. Hahaha . Twats.

Wishiwasanheiress · 03/06/2013 15:43

Yabu. Sometimes a person needs to be told to grow a pair, suck it up, get on with it. Usually on whiny self centred posts. So, out of a group you will get a few thinking "heavens get a grip girl" along with other views.

It's just exasperation. I don't see much issue.

TinBox · 03/06/2013 15:46

Why is that a twattish thing to do, Pag? Sometimes that's really good advice - which people sometimes resist taking, and it doesn't hurt to be a bit insistant about it.

quesadilla · 03/06/2013 15:50

It depends on the topic of the post, some people do get wound up by some stunningly trivial shit.

But if someone is posting expressing concern over something serious like the welfare of a child/state of the NHS its an unhelpful contribution.

Pagwatch · 03/06/2013 15:55

It is if the op is fretting endlessly.
When the OP only still on the thread because they keep posting their forensic analysis of why she was wrong it's a bit twatty.

Op - grrrrrrr . Why did this man have to be so rude
Twat - well you kicked his car
OP - I didn't my son bumped his car...!
Twat - well if you hadn't selfishly been there. Why are you so obsessed with this
OP - I am not. I ave just explained 20 times that I didn't kick his car and I apologised
Twat - you really need to move on OP. you should have apologised.
OP - I did apologise
Twat - honestly, why are you still going on about this?

Etc etc for hours

  • any resemblance to any actual thread is coincidental.
