NotYoMomma · 02/06/2013 17:06

Does NOT mean you should drop your speed to 35MPH!!!!

Ianbu!

HATE this, seriously why do 50, traffic moving nicely and then bang on the break just as you go past?!

Note I didn't nearly crash but we had to slow right down and of course it was muggins here who got stuck at the next set.of traffic lights of doom

GRrrr twitch

Melika, that still doesn't make sense. You either know you're in a 40 zone, in which case you can safely maintain 40, or you've assumed it's a 30 limit, in which case you'd be driving at 30, when you discover it's actually 40. Either way there is no need to brake when you spot a camera!

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 03/06/2013 11:04

If. There. Is. No. Sign. Between. The. Last. 40. Sign. And. The. Camera. Then. The. Limit. At. The. Camera. Is. Still. 40. And. You. Do. Not. Need. To. Brake.

Just spelling it our for you Smile

livinginwonderland · 03/06/2013 11:06

"OMFG. If I am trundling along the road which is a 40 and then some time down the road a camera appears and the signs are not visible or missing as they sometimes are, then I assume it is 30"

Uh. If there is no sign betwween the 40 sign and the camera, then the speed limit is 40, not some random figure you've plucked out of thin air.

melika · 03/06/2013 11:08

oh what ever, trevor!

Ilovemyself · 03/06/2013 11:11

Orangefire. Strictly speaking you are not correct. In a built up area there should be repeaters every so often (7 lamp posts it used to be) if the limit is not 30. So if you can't see the signs every few hundred yards then you should be doing 30 and not need to brake anyway.

I think the likelihood of all of the signs being stolen is pretty remote.

But you are correct in saying that if you have to brake to 30 because you were not sure then you were speeding at best, or driving without due care if not!

Melika. You really don't get it do you..........

IneedAsockamnesty · 03/06/2013 11:16

Melika do you change your driving style if a police car is behind you?

If you do then you know your doing something wrong and you know you shouldn't be.

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 03/06/2013 11:17

ILM I'm sure you're right (well, I know you're right so far as the HC goes) but I'm not sure where I've said different? I am cotton-wool-head with lurgy however so my descriptive powers are probably not at their best, so I may have implied something I didn't mean and which I can't see on re-reading?

Ilovemyself · 03/06/2013 11:19

Orange fire. I was just being pedantic Wink. You didn't mention the repeater signs. Or I may be having one of those days as well lol

melika · 03/06/2013 11:24

Are you sure you haven't gone over the speed limit by even 1MPH?

If so, well done, perfect people.

NotYoMomma · 03/06/2013 11:27

Oh how I love my own thread lol :D

Full of 'did you mean to be so rude?' s and it's own resident idiot driver to boot :D

OP posts:
Ilovemyself · 03/06/2013 11:28

I admit I go over the limit. When the conditions allow. And never in anything other than a national speed limit.

The difference is I know what the limit is for any given time as I am paying attention. I know how long it takes for my car ( or bike) to stop and I travel within that limit ( again, travelling to the conditions)

To speed in a built up area or a 30 limit is something I would not do and do not understand

ArbitraryUsername · 03/06/2013 11:29

I think you are missing the point here. People aren't claiming that they've never sped; they're pointing out that one of the responsibilities of driving is knowing what the speed limit is for a road. There are very occasional stretches of road where the signage is not what it should be, but generally it's quite obvious to anyone paying attention what the speed limit is wherever they are driving.

NotYoMomma · 03/06/2013 11:30

But you just fluctuate wildly by over 10mph because you either

  1. don't pay attention to signs

  2. ignore the last speed sign ans assume that it's 30 because you don't know how to read the road

OP posts:
Nehru · 03/06/2013 11:30

clears throat

repeater signs for speed cameras are not a legal obligation just a recommendation by the chief police officer people association ( what ever they area called)

ArbitraryUsername · 03/06/2013 11:30

But is anyone going to admit to (and try to justify) being an aggressive tailgater? Someone on MN must be. There are so many of the buggers out there.

NotYoMomma · 03/06/2013 11:32

I've been over the limit of course but never had to brake because of it. I do near the speed limit and if I do waver over it I rresolve it by taking my foot off the accelerator.

OP posts:
OrangeFireandGoldashes · 03/06/2013 11:36

I speed on dual carriageways and motorways. I love driving fast and when it's safe to put my foot down I happily will. I am aware of what the speed limit actually is, though.

AU, my dad is an aggressive tailgater. He practically vibrates with impatience to get past. I hate being in a car with him.

ArbitraryUsername · 03/06/2013 11:43

Ah, but he's not on here trying to explain why he is absolutely right to do so. Let's hope someone comes on to explain why they are a good driver because they aggressively tailgate.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 03/06/2013 11:45

I never understood the 'I bet you're all bad drivers so it's ok for me to be one' argument.

Logically, if you know yourself to be a shit driver, you should really hope the rest of us are good! Grin

melika · 03/06/2013 11:55

ho hoSmile

Lazyjaney · 03/06/2013 11:57

Sometimes there isn't a speed limit signal near the camera, so you're not sure what it is and you have to take the worst case assumptions.

And I know of more than one town where they drop the speed limit for a short stretch past the camera, so it's not totally irrational.

Fakebook · 03/06/2013 12:07

You don't need speed limit signs to know what the limit is near a camera. If there is street lighting its a 30mph zone, might be 20, but there will be signs for that. It's called a built up area. 40 or 50 mph zones are also highlighted.

Why can't people read the Highway Code.

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 03/06/2013 12:08

Sometimes there isn't a speed limit signal near the camera, so you're not sure what it is and you have to take the worst case assumptions.

Or you could, you know, read the road. Be observant. Notice the speed limit signs / repeaters (or lack of them). Note when the limit changes.

I appreciate that seems to be a revolutionary concept for some of you who presumably spend your time behind the wheel wafting along in a "hello trees, hello sky" haze, right up to the point you think "FUCK! CAMERA!" but you should really give it a try.

Lazyjaney · 03/06/2013 12:21

"You don't need speed limit signs to know what the limit is near a camera. If there is street lighting its a 30mph zone, might be 20, but there will be signs for that. It's called a built up area. 40 or 50 mph zones are also highlighted"

That is not true, there are exceptions all over the UK, especially in built-up areas.

"Or you could, you know, read the road. Be observant. Notice the speed limit signs / repeaters (or lack of them). Note when the limit changes"

You are making the assumption the road is well written, or there is not a lot of other signage confusing the issue.

Better road signage is the answer, some is so bad around cameras you start to suspect it's deliberate.
