AIBU to think that having a desire for crap like crisps and choc is NOT a pregnancy craving?

I think the idea of cravings has been distorted. I have 2 DC and both times had full-on Pica. That's the need to eat weird things which aren't really food...also the need to smell certain things.
Mine were ice, smelling flash cleaner with bleach and coal.

THAT is a pregnancy craving. Fancying more Walkers than usual is not a craving.

Neither is a desire to gannet pies and cakes.

I wanted apple sauce with everything. From potatoes to beans on toast. Even just eating it from the pan (had to be home made).

NorthernLurker · 30/05/2013 16:23

I don't get where the need to dictate what is and isn' a craving comes from. Unless it's to have something to bash pregnant women over the head with?

'You're NOT craving, you're just fat....' Hmm

Personally I found the 9 months of sickness restricted my diet consideably as there were only a few plain things I could eat without throwing up. I had pica with dd1, not so much with the others. LOVED the smell of paint and liked chalky things. I had a little box of chalk I used to grind up. Also got through mega amounts of extra strong mints - which I crunched up happily.

MisselthwaiteManor · 30/05/2013 16:24

I know my own body well enough to know the difference between really fancying something, which passes, and having a craving which does not pass, can't be ignored, and is almost impossible to satiate. If that craving happens to be crap junk food then so what? Why are only certain cravings 'real'? I think pregnant women feel guilty enough about what they're putting in their mouths without being called a greedy, lying, gannet.

MrsBungle · 30/05/2013 16:24

But pica isn't a normal pregnancy craving. I sniffed, sucked and ate lemons! Really really needed to . In the supermarket I had to stop myself picking up and sniffing lemons!

I've never eaten so many macdonalds in my life as I did when pregnant. Never have them now. I think I really craved salty stuff and lemons. I don't think anyone can say if someone else's fancy is a craving or not.

BarbarianMum · 30/05/2013 16:24

I ate bath sponges as a child - and again during pregnancy. During pregnancy it was definately a full blown 'must have' craving. I also craved red meat during pregnancy but with nothing like the urgency with which I craved bath sponge.

MrsBungle · 30/05/2013 16:26

Agree with hoppus

NewAtThisMalarky · 30/05/2013 16:27

I craved crisps when I was pregnant - salt and vinegar, a flavour I'd never liked. I also craved pickled beetroot.

You might have an opinion, but I can tell you now that it was a craving. Believe me or don't, I couldn't give a stuff!

iliketea · 30/05/2013 16:28

I craved twiglets and marmite when I was in early pregnancy, stopping the supermarket and buying a jar of marmite, then about half the small jar with my fingers in the car park. I quite like marmite, but the craving for it was nothing like anything I have ever known. And then craved twiglets for about a week after that.

Then I found out I was pregnant - think my body was telling me I needed folate / other b vitamins.

OnceUponAThyme · 30/05/2013 16:29

I craved tissue paper when I was pregnant. we got through way more toilet rolls than normal Grin

CAF275 · 30/05/2013 16:30

DC1 Sainsbury's cheesy puffs - actually ate through their entire stock so had to go to local garage for Wotsits for a week Blush

DC2 Sugar. Sugar in coffee for first time since I was about 10. Also home-made tablet, which is basically sugar & condensed milk.

Thankfully back to normal within a few days of her arrival!

Apanicaday · 30/05/2013 16:31

Mummyofsunbeam - my craving is granny smith apples. Normally I can't abide them, but when pregnant I get through at least 4 a day (and would happily eat more). They have to have been in the fridge too - room temp ones just don't do it for me!

SixPackWellies · 30/05/2013 16:32

I craved oranges. I hate oranges, and would not even have one once a year. While pg with DC 3 I ate 1 a day, which was a real craving for me!

Damnautocorrect · 30/05/2013 16:33

Sausage baguettes, bacon baguettes, dominos pizza. Basically anyway you can get meat and bread together.
Funnily enough they are pretty much the only thing ds eats now.
It was a need not a want

McNewPants2013 · 30/05/2013 16:33

My craving on ds was curry, before I had a BFP I hated curry. I now love curry.

Dd was oranges, before having her I couldn't even touch the peel.

SixPackWellies · 30/05/2013 16:33

With DC 1 I craved ham and cheese toasties. Most annoying as I was vegan before being pg. I indulged too!

Wishiwasanheiress · 30/05/2013 16:33

Sugar and spice and all things nice = little girls surely?

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 30/05/2013 16:35

I drank pints and pints of milk when pregnant.
If milk as bad for you then I would have stopped myself.

Youcanringmybell · 30/05/2013 16:36

Pregnancy one: No cravings but desired only sweet food and not savoury.

Pregnancy two: Repulsed by sweet food and by chewing my nails (habit before.
Craved Curry, Ice and the smell of lavender oil on a sponge with boiling water poured over - actually licked it a few times. weird.

FoofFighter · 30/05/2013 16:40

yabu and rather judgmental, others have put why so much better than I can.

blueberryupsidedown · 30/05/2013 16:41

OP, some PG women crave for sweet things. Why is that not a 'proper' craving? because you didn't have it?

I'm telling you Nothing could have stoped me from having crunchy nuts. Anyone trying to stop me would have been wacked on the head with a Kit Kat Crunchy.

GoodbyePorkPie · 30/05/2013 16:43

Amen to Hoppus.

YABU.

YABU

I had pregnancy cravings for salted crisps. Normally I hate crisps. And I still managed to lose 2 stone during my pregnancy so clearly not down to being greedy.

NeoMaxi - you are coming over as very judgemental on this thread - acting as if you are the arbiter of what is and is not a craving - ie, it is not a craving unless it is every day, and you can't have a craving for chips. Fwiw, I think you could have a craving only occasionally during a pregnancy - sometimes cravings are your body's way of telling you that you need some specific mineral or nutrient - so if your body only occasionally needs that nutrient, you might only have the cravings occasionally.

Also, the corollary of saying that you can't crave chips or icecream or whatever, or that someone isn't desperate enough about a certain foodstuff for it to count as a craving, is that they are just eating it because they are greedy - and that is, naturally, putting some people's backs up!!

Why does it matter so much to you to 'prove' that some women's eating habits during pregnancy aren't cravings?
