To think dh has no clue how much things cost. Does yours?

I went shopping to tesco last night and as usual spent around £100 for three of us to last us just over a week. Dh can't understand how I'm spending so much but he will only eat brand names products (don't get me started) and good meat and fish.

I gave him a little quiz on the current cost of items in the shops. Here are his answers:

1st class stamp: 25p (60p)
2 pints of milk: 50p (90p)
loaf of bread: 60p (1.20)
2 chicken fillets: 2.00 (5.30)
Six free range eggs: 90p (1.70)
Jar of coffee: 1.00 (2.50)
Washing tablets: 1.00 (4.00)

No wonder he thinks I'm spending a lot! He has no idea! Would your dh / dp know? I think dh may have to do the shopping next week!

DH and i do the weekly shop together every week - i bet neither of us could tell you the price of a pint of milk if you put a gun to our heads Grin

TinBox · 29/05/2013 17:42

My Grandpa was a miserly old soandso and never gave my Grandma enough for the weekly shop. She just told him that sanitary protection was 4 times the price to make up the difference, knowing he'd never check that price.

That's so sad.

StuntGirl · 29/05/2013 18:03

I agree tinbox :(

ChubbyKitty · 29/05/2013 23:41

That's another great one. "Why have you bought those they cost money!" "To shove up my nose sweetheart."

Apileofballyhoo · 30/05/2013 01:36

Intrigued as to what your DH could be splashing around without realising its value, topbannana. Balsamic vinegar?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/05/2013 02:04

Fuck's sake. He's not your boss. If it's your job to manage the household shopping, then you manage it.

All these dear funny DHs, no idea about the real world, never mind, they've got so many more important things to worry about, tee hee.

musicmadness · 30/05/2013 02:15

I wouldn't know most of these and I do the shopping.

1st class stamp - haven't bought a stamp this year yet.
milk: - Never checked the price.
loaf of bread - Never checked the price.
2 chicken fillets - Wouldn't know (Vegetarian)
Six free range eggs - Knew this one.
Jar of coffee - Never bought it.
Washing tablets: Haven't needed to buy any for ages, tend to get whatever's on offer.

I know I usually spend £15-£20 max on a weeks worth of shopping for me but I wouldn't know the exact prices of everything. He shouldn't be moaning about the cost if he never does the shopping but it doesn't mean you know nothing about the real world if you can't recall prices at the drop of a hat!

StuntGirl · 30/05/2013 03:07

I was too baffled by the stories of all the poor little men earlier, but this "he only eats brand names amd good meat" bollocks...fuck that. I assume you also do the cooking when you get home? And I assume you won't cook something awful or inedible for the family? In that case he can shut up and put up, he's getting fed with decent food. When he does the shopping and manages the food budget he gets to dictate what gets bought, otherwise it's your call.

AdoraBell · 30/05/2013 03:21

My OH has a vague idea because after a few times of being bollocked about the shopping Bill I sent the cheeky bastard shopping for about a monthGrin. He needs an ocasional reminder still, just so he keeps up To dateWink

AdoraBell · 30/05/2013 03:32

I hadn't read through but the comment about inflating thing the cost of sanipro, which shouldn't have been necassery, reminded me of something. The first time OH (then the BF) got shopping together I picked up a pack if Tampax and he said 'oh, I haven't budgeted for those' and wasn't joking.

I put them back and said okay I won't use them then. He looked like a deer in headlights as he asked 'what will you use?' I said 'nothing, you haven't budgeted for it, what's next on your list?'

scarletforya · 30/05/2013 06:08

I do most of the shopping in our house but I wouldn't really know the cost of individual items.

I just buy what's needed.

One day my SIL asked me how much was a litre of milk in my city. I had no clue. She knew how much it cost in each different shop around her way! My brain just doesn't retain numbers like that.

maddening · 30/05/2013 06:10

My fiance does all shopping and cooking so definitely knows all the costs :)

NapaCab · 30/05/2013 06:17

My DH knows the price of everything as we usually do our food shopping together.

Why don't your DHs do the shopping? What's stopping them from going to the supermarket and planning the weekly meals, even together with you if they don't want to do it alone?

Get them out to the shops with a list of what to buy and then they will soon learn.

Madamecastafiore · 30/05/2013 06:22

No he doesn't.

He did the shopping for me a couple of weeks ago and spent 220 pounds! That was at Tesco and I usually only spend about 150 pounds with waitrose.

DeathMetalMum · 30/05/2013 06:31

Yy you are paying a lot for your chicken fillets, we pay £1 per fillet here from the butchers one does packs of 10 the other butcher does packs of 5.

Dp isn't great but I do the grocery shopping (mostly online) all the time so I can't really expect him to have a clue tbh. My dad however is great he can tell when thingd have increased in price from the previous weeks and can often know if something is priced cheaper in the other supermarket my parents use.

JollyOrangeGiant · 30/05/2013 06:33

DH occasionally expresses vague surprise at the total cost of our big weekly shop, but I think he would be fairly hot on individual prices as he does lots of top up shopping.

We also spend £££s despite being a family of 3. We don't spend lots on hair cuts or hobbies as we'd rather spend money on food.

DeathMetalMum · 30/05/2013 06:35

Oh and dp always puts the shopping away when the delivery turns up, I am crap at putting it away - thankfully.

Cassiphone · 30/05/2013 06:54

I'm amazed and impressed that you can all retain the prices for things! My brain doesn't do numbers, maths only started making sense to me at school when they replaced half the numbers with letters. Neither DH nor I could tell you the price of milk or bread.

I do the weekly online shop and then DH and I share the cooking but I have no idea how much things cost. I'm roughly aware what the weekly shop should cost but as it goes up and down depending on whether we've run out of expensive things like cleaning products I don't really pay that much attention (not to the penny). If it was wildly expensive I'd notice. And I do notice the difference if I do the shop at Ocado, Tesco or Sainsburys (I cycle, none of them has all the things I want).

exoticfruits · 30/05/2013 06:55

I can't see why you are all shielding them from the realities of life. Get them to do a grocery shop- it must be wonderful if you never have to bother with mundane things like food shopping!

exoticfruits · 30/05/2013 06:57

David Cameron and Nick Clegg were criticised for not knowing the price of milk- I didn't realise that it wasn't unusual and that only women buy it!

exoticfruits · 30/05/2013 07:01

The 'only eat brand names' is utterly ridiculous. You do the shopping therefore he eats what you get or he goes out and gets it himself!!
He also won't have a clue if it is in a recipe or if you decant it- e.g put cereal in a box.
He is supposed to be an adult and not your extra child.

exoticfruits · 30/05/2013 07:03

I should just tell him that he does know the cost you are not getting brand names and he can either eat what you buy or go out and get his own.

exoticfruits · 30/05/2013 07:04

I bet he can't cook either!!

seeker · 30/05/2013 07:08

As I said- if only someone would invent feminism......

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/05/2013 07:11

Don't be silly, seeker, we don't need feminism. Why, we're all equal these days, didn't you know? It's merely coincidence that it's only husbands who think they can dictate what they will and won't eat whilst not lifting a fucking finger to contribute to that meal.
