To ask a very personal, embarrassing health related question about erm, my fanjo?

Have NC but it's now permanent as I forgot my old password! (been on here a while though)

Basically, through a fog of tiredness (I have a 7 month old DD) when I had a bout of thrush about 3 months ago, I accidently applied Canesten cream that had been prescribed for my Caesarean scar and not the regular thrush cream I had in my drawer. No harm done or so I thought......

I've noticed over the past few weeks/months that I seem to be getting little cuts all over my vulva, not caused by any incident or injury god forbid!. I thought I'd accidently scratched myself while washing or something but I keep feeling sore and then seeing them, some are on the inner lips, some above the clitoris on the skin there sorry!

Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this? Related to wrong cream use or otherwise. I feel like a prize idiot for even having to ask on here, so would dread going to the doctors. Want to gather opinion before I even contemplate doing this!

I think you should pop to the gp, I doubt it's the cream though

OwlinaTree · 28/05/2013 10:48

Was it a steroid based cream? These can thin the skin. If you are worried see the doctor!

WilsonFrickett · 28/05/2013 10:50

It kinda sounds like thrush actually... there are different strains. And you can be more allergicy to some than others. If you think of it as skin hacks (you know when you get dry skin round your lips and it just splits?) rather than cuts - could you have some thrush-type irritation? Also how are your general moisture levels down there? I had a lot of dryness post-baby... which would also lead to sore skin/small splits.

Montybojangles · 28/05/2013 10:50

What was the difference in creams? Did it contain hydrocortisone?

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 28/05/2013 10:52

There are two types of canestan, one is an anti fungal used for thrush, the other is a steroid cream used to stretch foreskins and reduce scarring. I'd imagine it was the second type you had for your cs scar and it may have thinned the delicate skin of your fanjo.

You probably should go to the gp and have it checked out.

VulvaVoom · 28/05/2013 10:55

Monty Think it did contain Hydrocortisone, and having Eczema, I know that this can thin the skin but hadn't put the 2 together.

Wilson interesting that it could be a kind of thrush, hadn't thought of that but the itching seems to be pretty constant. And, erm, moisture levels, prob a bit 'drier' but not too bad Blush

Montybojangles · 28/05/2013 11:09

Think you might have overdone it a bit with the steroid and thinned the skin a little perhaps, as generally you would be a lot more conservative when applying HC than just regular canestan. Does sound like it might be thrush, and as Wilson says, this can lead to splits etc. go see your gp to be sure if you are worried (you won't be their first fanjo) :)

OHforDUCKScake · 28/05/2013 11:18

No. You would have to use a very strong steroid cream for years before it thinned your skin, even delicate fanny skin. As told by a Great Ormond Street dermatologist.

However, little stingy cuts are a sign of thrush.

You probably simply havent got rid of it.

In my experience, cream alone never gets rid of it.

WilsonFrickett · 28/05/2013 11:40

I don't know why, but the expression 'delicate fanny skin' is really making me laugh.

Poor OP ((fanny hugs))

Montybojangles · 28/05/2013 11:40

Im not sure that right. It partly depends on the strength of cream, but also on the area applied.
Copied from a dermatology site:

Skin absorption of topical steroids

Steroids are absorbed at different rates from different parts of the body. A steroid that works on the face may not work on the palm. But a potent steroid may cause side effects on the face. For example:

Forearm absorbs 1%
Armpit absorbs 4%
Face absorbs 7%
Eyelids and genitals absorb 30%
Palm absorbs 0.1%
Sole absorbs 0.05%

So fanjo is particularly sensitive. Side effects can occur after a few weeks if used in a sensitive area. Though rereading ops post, I'm not sure if she just did it the once and then realised, in which case no chance of that having added to the problem.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/05/2013 11:44

On the bright side though: fanjo on steroids! It'll be able to beat people up for you.

please somebody sketch a fanjo on steroids! ..sorry op!

IfNotNowThenWhen · 28/05/2013 12:09

I had this off and on post birth. Gynae said was thrush, as sugested. ( nothing boak about it, its just bodies!) get some proper pessary/ cream.
For some reason , cutting out sugar seemed to help with mine too.

Show us the evidence!

gnushoes · 28/05/2013 12:15

Vulva, how old are you? sounds like it might be hormone-related (if your oestrogen levels are going a bit wonky you can get this kind of problem -- could be breastfeeding, could be peri-menopause). You might need a topical hormone cream...

PiHigh · 28/05/2013 12:16

Sounds like Thrush to me. I had similar feeling of little cuts (no itching so didn't think it could be thrush) and doctor said it was unusual to have that with no itching but it was likely thrush and she prescribed some cream. Was fine soon after.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 28/05/2013 12:37

Wilson, fanny hugs? That sounds so wrong Grin

SirRaymondClench · 28/05/2013 12:44

I just wanted to say that I hope your fanjo gets well soon.
Thrush is a total bastard! Try some acidophilius (sp) as that helps with thrush.

WilsonFrickett · 28/05/2013 13:40

Moomin I know, but in situations such as these my standard MN reply is ::strokes hair:: - which in this context is even wronger! Grin

VulvaVoom · 28/05/2013 14:13

Thanks for the fanny hugs Wilson Grin

PiHigh, doesn't just feel like cuts, there are actual cuts, are others agreed that this is a sign of thrush too?? Have had thrush before but never like this.

gnu I'm 33, God I hope I'm not peri-menopausal just yet........

Bloody hell, I guess I have to go to the Doctors and show them bet they can't wait

daisydoodoo · 28/05/2013 14:24

vulva- yes it sounds like thrush. You could be itching at night without realisign causing the cuts. I had similar symptoms, and as im single and had recently got together with a new partner (although using barrier contraception) was paranoid that he'd given me something. Finally plucked up courage to go to the GP who took one look and said was most likely thrush, prescribed canesten pessary and cream but took swabs just in case. Needless to say results came back clear and the pessary and cream did the trick.

I think maybe becasue i'm getting older? but i am more prone to thrush now. Never had it ever until pregnant with dc4 but have had 5 or 6 times since she was born, shes 3 now and 3 times in pregnancy with her.

sorry to hear about your problem OP nothing constructive to add, natural yogurt will help to soothe the itching and soreness, hope you get it sorted soon

Im laughing at Wilson fanny hugs and wondering if stroking hair was better or worse Grin
