AIBU? Dreadful news about Woolwich killing. Front page of a news website has the picture of a man with bloody hands and weapons. The blood of the murdered man.

AIBU to not want to see this and have a choice? They could take it off the front page FFS

I have complained to ofcom... Easy to do online.

HollyBerryBush · 22/05/2013 22:11

Use the remote and turn it off. You know it will replay same as the twin towers, with people jumping , for those working odd hours and different shift and the plain rubber neckers.

24/7 news cannot be stopped for you

CaptainJamesTKirk · 22/05/2013 22:11

This is the link to Ofcom complaints

CaptainJamesTKirk · 22/05/2013 22:12

And yes... I've switched off my television.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/05/2013 22:12

It's just been on the BBC. I'm horrified.

miffybun73 · 22/05/2013 22:14

Yes, just saw it on BBC News at 10, couldn't believe it. Horrifying.

SauceForTheGander · 22/05/2013 22:14

YANBU

I can't watch the news. The bloody hands and knife of a murderer should not be shown. Shockingly disrespectful , gorey. And worringly exciting for those that support them. They asked to be filmed, that wanted this fame. Idiotic to give it to them.

SucksToBeMe · 22/05/2013 22:19

I agree with Holly. This is awful but it's happened. Turning off the TV doesn't make it go away.

Hmm
valiumredhead · 22/05/2013 22:23

I just accidently saw this while channel hopping. Awful for the family, I'm horrified it was shown.

Binkybix · 22/05/2013 22:25

I was shocked by it. I might have missed it, but I'm sure there wasn't a warning the first time they showed it on ITV at about 7pm. You could also see the body.

It seems unnecessary to me, it's voyeuristic and I don't think I adds to the reporting. If I was the family of that man I would never be able to get that image out if my head. I think that's more important than our 'right' to see the gory details.

And yes to the people who have pointed out that this gives these people exactly the publicity they were after.

the news media are just following te way of the world
dozens of people filmed it on their phones
if the BBC had NOT shown the footage they would have been accused on censorship

and footage of disasters always includes injured people - the family leaving the tornado school in Oklahoma having left others in te class dead in te rubble etc

there may also be a political angle in that it shows not all islamic nutters have brown skin and beards ....

CheungFun · 22/05/2013 22:34

I agree with most people on the thread so far. I just read about this on the Indpendent website and I was shocked to see a photo of a man holding knives with his hands covered in blood, there is no need for this photo to be shown let alone a video IMHO.

My thoughts are with the victims family and friends, and also with the people who witnessed this.

Ilovewaleswhenitrains · 22/05/2013 22:40

I agree, I think it terrible that this murder has taken place, to then give the murderers publicity is wrong, to do so with the blood of an innocent person on his hands is horrific. I have stopped looking at any online newspapers, it's too upsetting.

DoJo · 22/05/2013 22:40

But that is a part of the news - the footage was shot by a bystander who was filming and spotted by the murderer who went over and began to deliver his agenda. The manner in which they behaved, the fact that they seemed to court interest from bystanders and the fact that they made no effort to flee or conceal their identities is a very big part of what makes this crime so shocking. Showing the footage is a big part of reporting the events of the day and failing to do so would underplay just how shocking and horrific those events were. I can see how it could upset a small child, but honestly, I think allowing your child to watch the news unsupervised is probably going to lead to this at some point anyway.

EuroShaggleton · 22/05/2013 22:42

I've watched the video. I wanted to. It was a horrific thing that happened in a place I know. I am not damaged by watching it. It helped me to understand what has happened here.

I do not see any reason to censor this, but I do think it's appropriate to give a warning before showing it, as I understand that not everyone will want to see it.

RhinestoneCowboy · 22/05/2013 22:43

I complained to the BBC on their web-page about their broadcasting of this footage. I see now I am not the only one who found it deeply offensive.

I thought it was insensitive to be shown on national news. What of the soldier's family?

It was also pandering to the murderers who clearly wanted to show themselves gloating over this murder.

Shallishanti · 22/05/2013 22:45

If you want to know what is going on in the world, turning off the news isn't really an option is it. It's true that the fact that they wanted to be filmed is part of the story. But that doesn't mean you have to SHOW the film. You just say ' the attackers made no attempt to conceal their identities and requested passers by to film them. They were recorded as saying.."..." ' That way we get to know what happened but without disrespect to the victim and his family.

RhinestoneCowboy · 22/05/2013 22:47

IMO it doesn't matter who filmed it, bystander or not. Broadcasting it on national news is an entirely different matter. It could have been edited. The BBC journalists here completely lost the plot IMO. I think it would be harmful for a child to see by the way... If the newspapers are going to go like this, I will not be buying one tomorrow. It is an appalling enough crime, hacking someone to death, and I can understand what that means without being shown the victim's blood all over the murderer's hands. It was also pandering to the murderers - they wanted this shown.

amazingmumof6 · 22/05/2013 22:49

hollyberry your views make me feel sick - well the ones I read, I can't bear to read them all

what if was your son/husband/brother/father/friend?

poor, poor man and his familySad

Mintyy · 22/05/2013 22:58

Horrible, violent, awful murders happen every day.

What is different about this case is that the news channels have broadcast the murderer and given him a voice as to "why" he did it?

Would those of you who are defending it be happy to watch film of a rapist immediately after he had raped a woman justifying why he did it?

Why can't you see that this is different to the normal run of the mill coverage of murder?

Shallishanti · 22/05/2013 22:59

absolutely rhinstonecowboy
thanks for the link, Jim

Mintyy · 22/05/2013 23:00

EXACTLY!

The murderers wanted to be on tv! And what did the news channels do for them ... ?

Disgusting.

BigcatLittlecat · 22/05/2013 23:06

Shocking images. Think they won't be shown tomorrow as news was moving very fast today but they will realise after all the complaints today that those films should not have been shown.
Won't stop them bring shared by muppets on social media sites.
That poor family.

Whatevermaybe · 22/05/2013 23:11

I know itv warned people, but seriously that poor man was lying on the road, and none of his family I presume would have had no idea what the hell had happened.
