I don't want to see a man with blood on his hands

AIBU? Dreadful news about Woolwich killing. Front page of a news website has the picture of a man with bloody hands and weapons. The blood of the murdered man.

AIBU to not want to see this and have a choice? They could take it off the front page FFS

All very well Gigondas but it was there on the front page FFS. I didnt haw a choice.

There should be a bloody line, a standard of decency. It affects how you see the world IMO.

And as for you Bridge, you talk shit.

Holly you can report a story without showing pictures. Would you like to see pictures of children being abused eg if images taken for pedophilia purposes? I bet not because that would be too far.

I'm on the fence - I agree with Holly about censoring the news - or making it a bit fluffy - the news IS harsh and can be upsetting - some things should upset us and pretending they aren't there wont make them stop.

I also grew up with images of war and bombings as part of our weekly news - it didn't damage or desensitise me

I think - when something like this has happened, we should maybe expect to see blood - but I do get that it upsets people

That said - no one was upset by the images from America yesterday - of bloodied survivors and flattened houses.

gordyslovesheep · 22/05/2013 21:03

and yes Bridge you're a donut

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/05/2013 21:07

That murdered man's loved ones have no doubt seen the pictures of his murderer. He is covered in the poor man's blood. There is also reported to be footage of his decapitated body on youtube.

No, We don't need to see it.

CreatureRetorts · 22/05/2013 21:08

Actually gordy I'd say it does affect you because you describe the reporting as "maybe we should expect to see a bit of blood". Why should we?

And I was upset by the tornado reports - I had a choice not to look at pictures and chose not to. Reading the accounts was upsetting enough. Broke my heart.

Not showing the film is NOT censorship, and video footage does not guaruntee 'no lies are told' as someone said.
It doesn't help us understand what happened to see it.
On the other hand we often are confronted with images of suffering, blood, violence, death, but usually from some remote place and so this seems to matter less (not)
I think a more humane standards should apply in the reposring of ALL tragedies.

ophelia275 · 22/05/2013 21:12

I think one of the best responses to this terrorist attack is donate to the charity Hope for Heroes. Apparently the victim was a serving soldier wearing a HFH t-shirt.

If anyone wants to donate, their website is here;

MoominsYonisAreScary · 22/05/2013 21:12

I wondered what people were on about on fb, they shouldn't be given the air time and covered in the victims blood? That's just awful

CaptainJamesTKirk · 22/05/2013 21:13

YANBU...
I've just unfriended a load of people in Facebook for posting videos of these evil men.

RIP to the poor man who lost his life today in horrible, horrible circumstances.

thebody · 22/05/2013 21:13

Gordy, what do you mean? I certainly was upset by the tornado pictures and equally upset by today's.

One doesn't negate the other.

The dreadful thing about today is its not an act of nature but an act of evil.

Poor poor lad and his family.

HollyBerryBush · 22/05/2013 21:15

creature Frankly that analogy is pathetic and not a direct comparison.

PaperSeagull · 22/05/2013 21:16

YANBU. I am almost completely opposed to censorship. (There are a few exceptions where I can accept speech should be censored, but they are very few.) In this particular case, I would certainly not want to see the government ban any news outlet from showing these disturbing images.

However, I do think that it is incumbent on the media to report the news responsibly. Showing these images crosses the line into irresponsibility (and sensationalism and voyeurism), IMO.

CaptainJamesTKirk · 22/05/2013 21:20

Well said paperseagull.

gordyslovesheep · 22/05/2013 21:23

I mean news is full of upsetting and unsettling pictures - in the aftermath of a bloody stabbing I would expect to see blood - especially in pictures - blood stains are regularly shown

I didn't say people shouldn't be upset by it

there is room for differing views I would hope

CreatureRetorts · 22/05/2013 21:28

Why is it pathetic?

You seem to think that not showing pictures or giving people the choice as to whether to view them or not (whch is actually what I'm saying here) is censorship. That is pathetic.

The coverage is not something I would want my younger dc to see - but it happened. Warnings were given of graphic images. I think what made it all the more shocking was the fact that it happened here. I don't know what the answer is, but seeing the footage put the government reaction into context for me.

Seekingsense · 22/05/2013 21:42

YANBU.

It must be awful for the victim's family.

MrsMcGregor · 22/05/2013 21:47

I'm with you OP. ITN have been really insensitive to that poor man's family. The attacker shouldn't have been given airtime, especially not with the state he was in. I can't help but think how the dead man's family must feel seeing his murderer splashed all over the TV and presumably papers, with their son's blood on his hands. I hope ITN have removed that footage from their 10pm bulletin.

Wigeon · 22/05/2013 21:51

Agree with the OP. A big picture is right at the top of the homepage of the Guardian online site. Generally am quite unshockable, but, honestly, I think it's totally inappropriate for a mainstream newspaper to have that picture right at the top of their homepage.

Shallishanti · 22/05/2013 22:02

Have just put BBC news at 10 on, they have just shown the video footage, WHY???
just because ITV did?

Damn I've just seen the video on the news. Hadn't seen the earnings or this thread. That poor poor man what a terrible death.
I feel very upset. Don't watch it if you can avoid it.

Ledkr · 22/05/2013 22:07

Sorry I mean the WARNINGS

Shallishanti · 22/05/2013 22:08

they are showing it again and again
not only insensitive, but actually giving them the publicity they want
we should complain
