AIBU?

All I seem to see lately is the word chavvy to describe names, items, clothes etc that people don't like.

So far names that aren't Arlo or Benedict, are double barreled or start with a K are chavvy.

Using Nanna is chavvy.

Wearing character clothing (children) is chavvy.

Everything is fucking chavvy. It makes me wonder what people think chavvy means? Am I the only one who has noticed this?

I personally don't think chav is all bad.

HoneyDragon · 22/05/2013 19:12

This be the one

Or this?

Littleolivetree · 22/05/2013 19:15

No seagul, i said that because at times has questionable taste and needs advice. I called them chavvy because in my opinion that it the look that I personally consider chavvy (just a bit too footballers wife). I would refer to a roll top bath being classic, a floral curtain as being shabby chic, a 70s coffee table as retro. These are words used to describe things. I wouldn't give two hoots what anyone thought if me or my mother. But I still will use the term chavvy to describe things which I feel are. It is entirely my opinion, unfortunately the term chav has made it's way into popular language. Maybe I am a bit younger than you are, but this is a word I have grown up with. I wouldn't call anyone a chav, but I see nothing wrong with using it in this context privately.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 22/05/2013 19:37

Honey, I have pampas grass and some £1 each assorted animal shaped solar lights from Homo Bargains (most of which are broken so not good value despite their nominal cost).

As for the rest of your Sex Pond vision, I am liking it. A lot Grin

KatyTheCleaningLady · 22/05/2013 19:40

I don't like sneering at the lower middles and new money vulgarians, as it makes the speaker look insecure.

But, I do internally sneer at truly trashy people. I mean more tattoos than teeth, favours aggressive dogs, and views civil behaviour with suspicion.

HoneyDragon · 22/05/2013 19:42

It's good isn't PropertyN Grin

Lizzylou · 22/05/2013 19:50

Oi, Op nowt wrong with Benedict. I dream of another baby boy so I can call him Cassius.
Am with Owllady, Mom (also from Mids originally) and my Grandmothers were Nan or Nanny.

I think the snobbish Mn contingent are far fewer these days tgan 8 or so years Think Chavvy is just a catch all, lazy term for either "they've got more money than me, bah!", or those who think that they are suddenly not "nouveau" anymore and are whooping with joy.

CherylTrole · 22/05/2013 20:00

SP look dont fret about the chav thing. All MNers have a bit of chav in them Confused

LynetteScavo · 22/05/2013 20:07

There is a little bit of chav within every single one of us.

Well, maybe not the Queen.

scottishmummy · 22/05/2013 20:09

I don't think anyone is fretting, this is faux indignation
I think op knows what chavvy is,and what it generally mean on mn
no real tears spilt

IneedAsockamnesty · 22/05/2013 20:54

It means people I like to look down on. I meant I as in the person who is using the word not I as in me.

Its quite handy when you see it on threads especially the name ones because it just says so much about the person claiming a name is beneath them. But somehow I'm pretty sure it does not say exactly what they are trying to convey usually just the opersit.

JenaiMorris · 22/05/2013 21:11

This is all horrifyingly post postmodern.

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 22/05/2013 21:56

I'm back. I went to bingo, didn't win anything!

No one is fretting. I just wanted to know what people think chavs means as its been thrown around randomly lately and doesn't make sense to me.

I dont care how people judge me. If I did I wouldn't be on here Grin

I was going to post something but a surefire sign that a thread is dying a slow death is when Scottishmummyturns up and starts posting nonsensical (presumably) booze inspired crap on it.

This thread has well and truly jumped the shark.
