AIBU?

All I seem to see lately is the word chavvy to describe names, items, clothes etc that people don't like.

So far names that aren't Arlo or Benedict, are double barreled or start with a K are chavvy.

Using Nanna is chavvy.

Wearing character clothing (children) is chavvy.

Everything is fucking chavvy. It makes me wonder what people think chavvy means? Am I the only one who has noticed this?

I fucking hate the name Arlo.

Pretentious, snobby knobheads use the word chav/chavvy. It helps them feel superior.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/05/2013 14:00

I use "Gran" for my DGM, is that acceptable?

AmberLeaf · 22/05/2013 14:01

In the context you describe OP, it basically means common so yeah, it is sneery and says more about the user of the term than who it is directed at.

YANBU.

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 22/05/2013 14:01

Really sp, I'll also tell my 94 year old nanna she's a chav!

Bowlersarm · 22/05/2013 14:01

Why does it worry you OP?

I'm sure we all do or wear something or other that is considered 'chavvy'.

AMumInScotland · 22/05/2013 14:01

My nan was anything but chavvy. A very nice middle-class lady, born in 1900. She wouldn't have known what chavvy was if it had leapt up and bit her. Think anti-macassars and everything polished to within an inch of its life, and you'll get the right idea.

I don't like the name Arlo either....but it seems it sometimes is a case of whether you're Arlo, or Harlow.

Not sure which side I come down on

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/05/2013 14:02

Bowler Probably because OP's RL name is often described as chavvy on here. It does start to grate eventually.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/05/2013 14:02

I don't think it's used in any context other than common and lower class on MN though, whatever it originally meant.

Bowler It doesn't worry me. I just don't get why people think saying something like the use of Nanna is chavvy just because they don't like it. It makes no sense.

M&S kotinka?
Surely you mean Macdonalds?

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 22/05/2013 14:05

Yabu. It just translates to 'common and of questionable taste'. Chavs exist. I have seen them!

ExcuseTypos · 22/05/2013 14:05

YANBU

Whenever I hear someone using it, I just think they are a judgey twat.

Chavvy used to be 'common' in my day!

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 22/05/2013 14:06

Property You might have seen them. The threads about using it to describe things people dont like such as the Nanna example or toddlers in character clothing.

ExcuseTypos · 22/05/2013 14:06

But who says you're judgement of 'common and of questionable taste' is correct property?

chavvy (adj): a person or thing that is ghastly or orange (or possibly both).

snob: (noun) : a person who congratulates themselves on being neither of the above.

And the name threads!

Anyone who thinks I am a chav because I have a shit name is an idiot IMO.

ephemeralfairy · 22/05/2013 14:09

I avoid using it. I have always understood the etymology to be rooted in the Romany word for child or youngster. Taking into account the current climate of increasing prejudice towards Romany and Traveller people, I prefer not to use the word 'chav' in a derogatory way.
