Rupert

36wks pg with baby no1, don't know the sex of the baby yet, however MIL, DM and various friends laughed when I suggest "Rupert James" was on our list for boys names, apparently if I call my son this he will be forever teased at school and be called "Rupert bear" expected to wear yellow trousers etc Hmm. DH just shrugged about this.

So AIBU to tell them to mind there own and use this name anyway (if I have a son) or am I setting my child up for a life of torment?

Other names we like:

Frederick James (Freddie)
Archibald George (Archie)
Cassius Paul
Lucius George

Girls:

Penelope Rose
Delilah Jane
Clara Jane
Evangeline Jane

IME I think that people just accept what people call their children.

I like the name Rupert. Children don't read Rupert Bear anymore anyway.

It is not surprising I like it, both my actual dc's names are on your list.

I think it depends where you live tbh

I live in a rough area and my child would get bullied for it...

BUt if I lived 20 minutes away in the posh area or elsewhere they wouldn't.

Not all areas and people are created equally unfortunately

Oh sod them, apparently my son is cursed by having the initials BJ. it won't matter and they should stop worrying about bullying and start thinking about raising children with enough self-esteem to not give a shit what a few idiot bullies who have been badly raised think.

I've known a few Ruperts and they don't have any problems. Maybe it depends where you live with regard to inverted snobbery.

I grew up in a posh area and never knew anyone who was bullied because of their name. There was a girl called Kameljit tho, and people (including herself and teachers) referred to her as Camel Shit.

My DS has a 'posh' name but apart from on MN no one has batted an eyelid.

I like Rupert, and actually, it's not a negative association with a bear anyway! As others have said, it's not this generation anyway

I cant think of any men I know who would have been happy to have been lumbered with the name Rupert to be honest, but at least he will have a second name that he can use.

Hi Well firstly congratulations. Rupert wouldn't be one of my names but that's not of my business. However I have never known anyone to be teased about their given name. I mean there's always unwritten rules I mean you wouldn't name a boy "Katie" for example. If you like Rupert then go for it. It's certainly different and interesting. The best name for the boy I would say is Archie though and Clara is nice for a girl. xx

My cousin is a Rupert. He's lovely and nobody ever picked on him.

None of those names would be to my taste, and certainly wouldn't be regular names in my area.

Will children be going to private school, might be best if picking from that list. Grin

I know two Ruperts who are both divine to look at, and as people. I assume that I'm therefore utterly biased towards the name Grin

I know someone who looks after a Rupert - it is a bit off a odd name so he is known by his friends/carers ar Roo and Rupert by his parents.

Branleuse · 21/05/2013 14:17

Its a great name. He'll probably get it shortened to Roo

Oh and i love Cassius - but it's too close to my own name sadly. And also i like Delilah and Evangeline.

The easy solution to this is to never share your potential names! I never told anyone our names as I didn't want opinions.

I know of one Rupert. I love Clara.

I would think Rupert would be more likely to be associated with Rupert Grint nowadays than Rupert Bear.

My 6 and 8 year old know who Rupert is as there was a kids' tv series of Rupert when they were younger. Is that not on any more? Not that it matters, just responding to people saying kids don't know who he is

Who the hell is Rupert Grint?

Name calling perhaps, but not bullying, but then with children, there is always something, ginget, tall, short, fat, thin, clever, thick, too angry, bad looser, spoil sport, pain in the arse, no fun - so the nugget to take from this is no matter what some kids will be mean and your children must learn how to deal with it.

I was very tall at school and had the surname Lewis, so was 'Lankey Lewis' or Stork SB, like the margerine.

So call your child what you want.

If thats the name you both love then go with it. Dont let anyone else's opinion affect it.

Were due next week and havent told anyone the name because i was scared someone might put me off the name i love.

I dated a rupert once. Never thought anything of it. As for the bullying.. will kiddies born in 2013 even know about rupert the bear? Is it still around?

It sounds gorgeous. Go with what you want!
