Rupert

36wks pg with baby no1, don't know the sex of the baby yet, however MIL, DM and various friends laughed when I suggest "Rupert James" was on our list for boys names, apparently if I call my son this he will be forever teased at school and be called "Rupert bear" expected to wear yellow trousers etc Hmm. DH just shrugged about this.

So AIBU to tell them to mind there own and use this name anyway (if I have a son) or am I setting my child up for a life of torment?

Other names we like:

Frederick James (Freddie)
Archibald George (Archie)
Cassius Paul
Lucius George

Girls:

Penelope Rose
Delilah Jane
Clara Jane
Evangeline Jane

Why are you so bothered you judge other people's choice of name .

loofet · 21/05/2013 18:05

Rupert is lovely, really classic and timeless. As others have said kids don't know who Rupert the bear is anyway. I'd go for it if I were you Smile

Delilah is lovely too but quite common these days, as are Archie and Freddie. Evangeline was on our girls list, lovely name Smile.

TheFallenNinja · 21/05/2013 18:05

Hmm. Rupert. Makes my wedgie giving urge kick in.

HibiscusIsland · 21/05/2013 18:31

How about

Penelope -Ella,
Delilah -lily,
Clara -mae,
Evangeline -Rae,
Rupert -lee

getyourheadout · 21/05/2013 18:31

if i heard any of those names i would just snigger and think the parents want people to think they are posh , but each to their own , im sure the kids will shorten them to something a bit less snooty when older .

BonkeyMollocks · 21/05/2013 18:35

Is this baby names or AIBU? Confused

JackieTheFart · 21/05/2013 18:37

Rupert James is horrible IMO. YABVU.

I don't like any of your names. I think they sound ever so pretentious. At a push I would say yes to Clara.

AmataesAmataes · 21/05/2013 18:51

hibiscus mature Hmm

getyourheadout but we are posh Wink

Don't see the irony between the two threads, I judge other people's children's names, I assume other people will judge mine.

I like Rupert

And Lucius

And Rufus

But DH overruled and we have a Tristan which I wasn't sure of at first but love now.

DontmindifIdo · 21/05/2013 19:04

OP - this is why you shouldn't discuss name lists with the older generation - bearing in mind they didn't pick names like that, there wasn't many Georges, Archies, Arthurs, Harrys, etc in my class at school, there was Garys, Darrens, Scotts, Kevins, Mikes - then for girls, Sarah and Claire/Clare, Kimberly, Laura with everyone picking Louise as a middle name - names that now sound very dated. Rather like their parents picked names like Brian, Keith, Brenda, Sue etc.

Grandparents will think they sound like dated names, because to them, it's like you deciding to name your little boy Brian, the "grandad chic" in boys names sound good to us.

Rupert bear is something I've not seen on TV or seen as a book since having DS 3 years ago, I can't imagine many of your DS's generation will have even thought of it.

Refuse to discuss any names with anyone other than your DH. Just inform them the name of your DC, don't give them any say in it.

stealthsquiggle · 21/05/2013 19:19

None of those names would be out of place in my DC's school, which probably says more about the school than the names Grin.

No Lucius' that I know of, though. Luca and Lucien but not Lucius.

Ignore your parents. Mine thought DB and SIL were joking when they told them the planned name for DNeice, but now it's just her name, and no one questions it or comments on it.

Fluffeh · 21/05/2013 19:28

My DD is Delilah so I'm slightly biased but I'd go with that!

stealthsquiggle · 21/05/2013 19:31

Flufeh does she get called Delilah, or Lila? There is a child at school called Lulu, and I have always wondered if that is her full name or not (also sisters called Alex, Georgie and Tony, but I know their full names Grin)

AprilLudgate · 21/05/2013 19:32

I know a Rupert in his late teens and he's very cool!

No-one would bat an eyelid round my way. I think it's lovely.

If you search hard enough, you will be able to make any name rhyme with something or sound like something that could be used to taunt the child. Just go with what you like.

quip · 21/05/2013 19:49

It'll be fine if you move in Rupert and Evangeline circles. If the other kids in your street are called kayden and ruby-may then it's time for a rethink.

TripTheLightFanjotastic · 21/05/2013 19:58

I actually called my DS Rupert. Everybody I told loved the unusual(ish) name. I had to tell my dad once not to take the piss about Rupert the bear, but he got the hint. I don't think it is any worse than Noah's ark, or Thomas the tank engine. He's known as Roo or Rupes among the family.

Also with regards to other posters, I don't think it's any posher than the other names you like, I feel it works well for a child, teenager or middle aged man. Rupert was almost Delia (close to Delilah) if he was a girl! Your child, do what you like! Grin

thegreylady · 21/05/2013 19:58

My two dgs aged 4 and 6 know and love Rupert but they also know both a child and an adult with that name and don't find it odd at all.

VenusUprising · 21/05/2013 20:01

I like the name Rupert.

But I think you should rethink the Rose / Jane vibe you have got going on with the second name for the girls...

specialsubject · 21/05/2013 20:06

Rupert is fine.

Cassius: 'narcissistic, vain, empty'. Maybe not...

bail16 · 21/05/2013 20:10

I love all those names! Rupert was on our list too!

We named our daughter Olive, and have had numerous comments about olive oil and olive on the buses, but I just think 'get over it- it's our baby and our choice!' There will always be someone who doesn't like the name bit there will be a lot more who do! And even they don't, sod them!!!

ChestyNut · 21/05/2013 20:13

My first dog was called rupert.

Lovely boy he was Smile

marjproops · 21/05/2013 20:15

you could always call him Klay - (boak.)!!! Grin

Cassius? or cassius Klay!!! yep, muhammad Ali.

at least you're not going down the
Klay/Apple/Tiger Lily/peaches /hero etc etc route.
