AIBU?

to want to know some of the unspoken rules of MN?

Just that really! I only joined a few months ago and have already learnt a lot of useful (and some less useful) stuff. On the whole I've been impressed by the tone of helpful solidarity and good-natured humour that prevails. But every now and then I'm wondering what I'm missing: why do some threads get hardly any replies, but others with pretty much the same question get loads? Why, as I read somewhere here, are displays of affection such as xx or virtual hugs a big no-no? Why does posters' whininess seem to be more accepted than neediness or petulance? (Huge generalisation, maybe unjustified) I'm a bit surprised about myself that I care, but I guess during the marathon of night feeds MN has become a rather good companion whose dynamics and rules I'd like to know better.

I'm not trying to be controversial, by the way, just genuinely curious.

And just be mindful of your spellchecker. There have been some absolute corkers on here, many of which are in Classics, such as the "Big Shit".

Spreadshit comes up a lot as well.

Greetings! And enjoy :)

My goodness, there is more! You are all very generous with your wisdom this evening. I have a lot more to learn, it seems. Such as how how 'dragon butter' would ever come up in a conversation in the first place (I know I'm a bit suburban, but still?).

But I love the way MN appears in your posts as this big, dark watering hole, where a myriad of exotic creatures meet in the depth of the night: there are the LOL-ers, the Grinners and the Huggers, the Feminists, the Expats, the School-runners and the Nightfeeders; the Trolls can be seen more and more often; and every now and then there are some Twats coming out of their hiding... If you post about:

ear-piercing
circumcision
P&C parking

Some wag will come on and say "hasn't this been done to death", as if you are meant to just know, and moreover no-one is allowed to talk about common topics

Now you know, though Wink

Don't fucking type "lol", unless you actually are laughing out loud, which I seriously doubt, and even then don't type it

do not admit to appreciating p&c spaces - you always park far away as that's how they did it in the 70's , 80's & 90's.

Talking of non AIBU's in AIBU...

Is anyone ever tempted to go onto one and just say YABU even though it makes no sense (because the poster isn't ACTUALLY asking an AIBU question!!)?

Don't post controversial subjects or subjects that that appear in the DM, you will be accused of being a troll, or starting a bun fight, or you might get a Hmmor I'm getting my popcorn out, from some people

No breastfeeding vs formula threads, or benefits threads they have been done to death and people are generally bored of them

No racism, sexism or anti disability/SN

No generalising osweeping statements. Try to word your posts and replies carefully, read them before posting

Hope this helps Smile

smudging
Also there are some posters with an agenda. You will recognise them if you waste too much time on here. They are easy to spot as no matter what topic is being discussed they always twist it round to their pursuit of spreading their ideology. It can be quite impressive...though a bit tiresome.
Grin Wink
This is why I want a hide poster you know who option.

Don't start threads about threads, either discuss your point on the thread or let it go.

Don't start a thread unless you mean to chat to folk on the thread and update them.
Just because you start a thread doesn't mean that you get to decide when it finishes.
