to want to know some of the unspoken rules of MN?

Just that really! I only joined a few months ago and have already learnt a lot of useful (and some less useful) stuff. On the whole I've been impressed by the tone of helpful solidarity and good-natured humour that prevails. But every now and then I'm wondering what I'm missing: why do some threads get hardly any replies, but others with pretty much the same question get loads? Why, as I read somewhere here, are displays of affection such as xx or virtual hugs a big no-no? Why does posters' whininess seem to be more accepted than neediness or petulance? (Huge generalisation, maybe unjustified) I'm a bit surprised about myself that I care, but I guess during the marathon of night feeds MN has become a rather good companion whose dynamics and rules I'd like to know better.

I'm not trying to be controversial, by the way, just genuinely curious.

Spreadsheeting, huh?

Make sure you know every poster's entire past posting history, because if you don't, you're likely to post a response that doesn't take whatever it is you're supposed to know about them into account, which is a massive faux pas.

If you have a light-hearted and trivial whinge about your DH/DP not putting his socks in the washing basket or failing to cook your dinner in bed - please post this in chat and not relationships. Chat = Ha ha, what a nob, my DP drives me nuts too. Relationships = I can't believe you hven't left the bastard, are you a woman or a mouse! Oh and the feminist boards - be afraid, be very afraid!

OP - i think you will fit in nicely around here, welcome to mnet

oldendaysending · 19/05/2013 20:17

Never, ever, ever question the behaviour of a DC you do not know well, even if it is horrific. You will have 30 pages telling you the child undoubtedly has special needs, that no matter what damage the child did to you / your car / your DCs / your DH it is trivial compared to what the child's mother goes through and actually you SHOULD find that parent and APOLOGISE Grin

Don't google dragon butter. Really. Bleach your brain territory. Wink

YoniTime · 19/05/2013 20:25

Mumsnet is basically the only site on the internet where people don't lol, they only grin. I always forget this!

Ilikethebreeze · 19/05/2013 20:27

I do x sometimes
I do sometimes.
Dont know why they are unmumsnetty.
If enough people do it, they wont be unmumsnetty!

threads getting replies or not.
Depends on which boards they are posted, and time of day posted.
Busy times, from 18.20pm to 8.30pm and 9.30pm to 10ish as a very rough guide.
Non busy times, night time[excepts for expats and breastfeeders], and taking kids to school time and 5.15pmish to 18.20pm.

Wouldnt have a clue about the whininess. Seems like you know more than me on that one.

Post what you like ,how you like.

pictish · 19/05/2013 20:32

I hated the Grin when I started posting here, but I have grown used to it now.
I quite like a wee lol or a cheeky pmsl here and there.

usualsuspect · 19/05/2013 20:34

I see loads of posters use lol on here.

Ilikethebreeze · 19/05/2013 20:35

A tide of lols are coming in, as I presume, younger members join.

I broke the rules, I googled Dragon Butter... [Shock] [giggle]

Where does one find these 'classic threads'?

Also very nervous about the spreadsheeting, but I'm pretty boring so think I'm safe!

EggsMichelle · 19/05/2013 20:58

How did Shock not work?
