To Think DH is Being Ridiculous...

I will avoid being rude & writing as I really think as i will show him this thread later Grin

Rejigging our living room & setting up a new TV & as a result have just had "words" with DH & he just won't let it lieHmm, so I am throwing it open to the MN jury :)

We have a large old style 32" Panasonic Flat screen TV in another room, that will be replaced by the slim TV we are now replacing in the living room - so the old Panasonic can go.

In fairness when it was new 11 years ago, it was top of the range & is still a decent TV - BUT - I don't think anyone wants the old style deep backed style, even if they are a good brand I'm so technical not

I have recently seen the same TV in a junk shop window priced at £40 - it took weeks & weeks to sell - if it did sell & wasn't just moved.

SOOoo I suggest offering to give the TV to a friend of mine who doesn't have TV, though her DCs are obsessed with it when they come to visit/stay - she's not anti TV, but since hers died hasn't replaced it & haas said she isn't sure if she wants to, but probably will at some point as she realises the DCs miss it & as she has health problems TV can be useful at times she's struggling to cope.

DH thinks as it was an expensive TV when new, I should offer to sell it to her, not give it & has just has a rant at me as a result of my disagreeingHmm

SOooo AIBU to think we will be hard pushed to GIVE it away, let alone try & SELL it, as people just don't want these big old TVs anymore

???

TIA

Let him put it on Gumtree. Then he can man the phones as the calls flood in. Or not.
Would be very rude to ask friend for money for something that you could not easily sell.

A man with no friends, sitting in a room surrounded by obsolete electrical goods is not a good look for anyone, - I hope you are reading this MrRockin.

We couldn't even get ours nicked!

Put it at the side of the house alongside the broken dishwasher and fridge one morning before taking DD to school, intending to take them all to the recyclers when we got back. Did the school run and in the 30-45 mins that took, both the fridge and dishwasher were nicked, but the TV was left!

AmberLeaf · 18/05/2013 14:41

It would need either a freeview box or cable/satellite to work anyway.

It could be used to watch dvds though.

He is being mean and he won't sell it, that is why freecycle is full of these TVs.

YANBU

I think it is a lovely thought to offer it to your friend.

We had one of those. Couldn't get rid of it for love nor money. We even left it outside on a nice day and not even the junkies down the road wanted it - to be fair they'd have had a job lifting it with their wasted arm muscles. Took it to the dump in the end.

Someone you know can give it a useful home. Perfect!

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 18/05/2013 14:59

We have an old Panasonic like you describe and put it in the boys room for their consoles as it really wasn't good for much else.

Give it to your friend, it won't sell so at least if you give it away it'll get some use.

fuzzpig · 18/05/2013 15:00

YANBU, HIBUAATW (AATW = and a tight wad :o)

You sound like a lovely friend. When now-DH and I first moved out, we had no telly and my friend asked his mum to give us their old tv as they were updating theirs. We only bought a new one last year just in time for digital - so we had their old telly for about 5 years! It was lovely not to have to find the money for one.

11 years old is very old for a tv. best give away.

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/05/2013 15:08

I personally think there is something deeply unpleasant about someone who is not poor selling low value items to friends or family it just leaves a really nasty taste in my mouth.

elfycat · 18/05/2013 15:21

YANBU. Sounds like the one we sold for £10, 4 years ago and it'll be worth less now as flat screens are coming round second hand cheap or on freecycle.

Tell him to be grateful it's going somewhere useful at all. His 'green' credentials are all the reward he can expect.

Rockinhippy · 18/05/2013 16:25

Thank you for all the replies, so its unanimous then Grin

you've got me laughing my head off with some of themGrinGrinGrin

& wondering if some of you know him - Kurri I'm now wondering if you have been in our atticGrin

I bought the TV, so the final say was always going to be mine, but I needed him to see how unrealistic he is been, as he can get too attached to junk Mr Treebus in the soddin making

Thanks again I will be offering it to my friend & if she doesn't want it, will Greencycle it :)

you can not offer it to friend then ask them to pay that is just so embarrassing and rude!

give it away or call a charity like British Heart Fundation they might be able to pick it up and then sell in their designated shops so you won't feel it's wasted.
or take it to the skip.

DH is unreasonable.

Give it to your friend as a lovely, kind gesture and tell your husband after you have done it :-)

He is being VU, delusional & greedy. You would have to pay someone to take it away!
