Well I would feel very sorry for any child that gets named Cersei! Given what she gets up to right from the first book, and what happens to her later on...

In fact if it was me I would be a bit scared to use any of the characters' names until GRRM finishes the series, in case of what might happen to them later. Most of them seem to either be extremely dodgy from the start, or start out good but then get seriously compromised, or die horribly somewhere down the line!

Saying that, I guess you could get away with something like Jon, perhaps, cos you could always pretend it was nothing to do with that Jon if his character met an embarrassing fate later on

Arya was our chosen girls name. Turns out we are having a DS. I'm not going to lie, I'm disappointed we won't get to use Arya, especially as we can't decide on a boys name.

Lots of names are commonplace now because they were once in popular books, plays or films. Take Wendy - J M Barrie made that up, but I bet most people know a Wendy. Hayley and Samantha were made popular in 60s sci-fi films. My friend's children all have quite classic sounding names, but they're actually because of his and his wife's obsession with Buffy! Ad another friend called her daughter Lyra, after the protagonist in the His Dark Materials trilogy. I don't like Brienne as a name, but she is a kick-ass character to be named after, better than a namby-pamby princess.

Mind you, having said that, I always loved the name Juno, but the fact that there's a famous film called that put me off, even though it's a cool film and character. Anyway, had a DS, so immaterial.

I really like the name Alaynne. Don't want to do spoilers for those who've not read all the books, but it's an alias for one of the characters. How would we pronounce it though? In my head it's Ah-lay-naa.

We were discussing GOT baby names last night! I really like Tywin but not the character or what happens to him so probably couldn't go there (same for Theon). I think Tommen is cute as well but lots of potential still for him to go "wrong" as well (just about to start reading the most recent published book). I like Benjen too.

A lot more of them really appeal to me too .. I think it's because a lot of the names sound similar to recognisable "british" names but are a bit different, like Samwell, Edmure, Tywin, Rickon. The trick is to make one up yourself and hope to god a character doesn't pop up with that name in the last few books. A good idea which I reckon the author must also use is to combine two halves of different names. EG, Fredmund and Edrick...
