not understand why women can't spell anymore

To be fair I haven't really noticed this til I became pregnant and started using mumsnet/fb/text message more but when did half of women completely lose the ability to spell words correctly. I mean sometimes I have no idea what the heck is going on. I mean is their keyboard broke or are they getting charged by the letter?

Example someone please translate this for me: "js rushed home to lie don its buggin me im not abin much luck in this pregnancy at all breezed throu my others reali it mst b age"

or this " i can hardly see at miih" what the heck is a miih?

I take it this is not a young lady thing because this woman is in her 40s. My own mother constantly struggles with threw/through or you're/your. Did I miss some sort of revolution in language some time ago?

I assume OP, this is a wind up?

ouryve · 16/05/2013 12:00

Are you Michael Gove?

I don't ever recall a golden age when everyone could spell well, male or female.

BeCool · 16/05/2013 12:04

I think most of the time is a TYPING issue rather than a spelling issue.

But errors in grammar however are another matter entirely .....

Sunnywithshowers · 16/05/2013 12:07

Hilarious...

ZZZenagain · 16/05/2013 12:07

I think it is typing errors mostly. If you have an ipad or phone with self-correct function, things can come out very strangely.

I don't really bother to check my posts before I send them. I know I should but that is one reason why my posts often have mistakes in them.

I didn't understand "miih" either.

seasalt · 16/05/2013 12:13

I am a woman and I can spell anymore: A N Y M O R E. There you go Smile

LadyBigtoes · 16/05/2013 12:15

Actually, I think MN is full of people who can spell, construct a sentence and express themselves brilliantly in writing, especially compared to the general public. I know all sorts of people, including academics, senior civil servants, medics, and teachers who can't really spell or write well. I have to for my job so I notice when people don't.

I ignore typos, I do them myself on here, when typing fast. Also there are a lot of acronyms that might confuse people.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 16/05/2013 12:17

Oh the irony! Grin
Glass houses OP!
FWIW I am more than able to spell, and punctuate. Sadly my keyboard is a bastard. HTH!

Wuxiapian · 16/05/2013 12:17

Check your grammar, ColleenFromPA.

CakeExpectations · 16/05/2013 12:22

My huge breasts actually obliterate my view of the keyboard.

That would explain it.

Longdistance · 16/05/2013 12:27

Utter rubbish!!

My dh who is privately educated cannot spell for toffee waste of money

Doing a crossword is murder, I tell ya.....murder!

It can't be only women op! You have really jumped into the frying pan with your choice of aibu topic.

I think it's a mixture of text speak, typos, autocorrect & finally poor education. But YABU.

HesterShaw · 16/05/2013 12:33

"Is their keyboard broke"?

Okaaaaaaaay.

KurriKurri · 16/05/2013 12:34

I would guess the reason that some posts have spelling/grammar/punctuation mistakes in them (ignoring the nonsense in your title about it being a 'woman thing), is either because people are posting on phones/ipad/ technological things and have predictive text, or other posting problems which lead to mistakes.

Or because, like me, people who post on a forum consider it to be like a conversation - quick, and spontaneous, and therefore subject to the occasional error. If someone is speaking to me I would consider it to be the height of bad manners to point out any mistake in their speech. If they are writing me a formal letter and it was full of mistakes, I would be more critical.

But frankly when I see OPs along the lines of 'my Dh has left me, I've lost my house, I'm suffering from depresion, and I don't where to turn'
and the first reply is 'do you mean depression OP? written with a virtually audible sneer, then my 'oh look there's a total Bell End-o-meter' instantly goes off.

CecilyP · 16/05/2013 12:36

^My huge breasts actually obliterate my view of the keyboard.

I had that problem until I learned to touch type. Could explain why more girls than boys are taught this skill.

Plomino · 16/05/2013 12:48

Ohhhhhhhhh, so THAT'S why I always get the boy probationers to write all the statements is it ? Not because after twenty years of constructing prosecution files I've had enough practice whereas they haven't oh no. It's because they can spell like wot I carnt.

ephemeralfairy · 16/05/2013 12:51

I pride myself on my good spelling. I must be a man.

KittensandKids · 16/05/2013 12:52

any more

ColleenfromPA · 16/05/2013 12:55

Its just nice to see so many full sentances and correct spelling in one place. Finally mumsnet you have done it! :)

OP posts:
RooneyMara · 16/05/2013 12:58

sentances?

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 16/05/2013 12:58

ephe - I, too, like to think my spelling is none too shabby. completely and utterly shite with grammar though

I must be one of the wummin OP has kindly fingered. Hmm

Where IS the OP? more importantly, is it too early to crack open a lovely Marlborough to enjoy in the sunshine?
