To think that maxi skirts/dresses are too long for the average woman?

I'm 5'5, so I'm a bit of a short arse but not tiny (I don't think). But I can not find a maxi skirt or dress from anywhere other than the petite section that isn't at least 4 or 5 inches too long, and I'm talking dragging on the floor a fair bit too long.

I've also noticed that the bigger the size the longer they are, they seem to get longer by half an inch for every dress size.

Am I the only one who has this problem?

Im a size 10 and about 5ft 6ish. I get mine in the teen section of new look and h&m.

They fit much nicer than the adult sizes.

SundaysGirl · 14/05/2013 19:26

5'6 here and yes usually a little long. But I don't often wear heels.

Happiestinwellybobs · 14/05/2013 19:34

5' 8" here and usually too short. In fact I've just celebrated finally finding 2 that go down to the floor on me :)

SquinkiesRule · 14/05/2013 19:54

I have only admired them from afar I'm only 4'11" with a 29" inseam no way can I wear maxi skirts and dresses even from the petite section they drag along the floor. I'd love to have one that doesn't make me look like a shortie

DewDr0p · 14/05/2013 19:58

I'm 5'5" and have the same issue I was assuming it's my short legs, have the same problem with jeans I'm loving the slim hips reasoning though, I'm definitely going with that one, it was maybe true 5 years agoGrin

Sokmonsta · 14/05/2013 20:02

Yanbu. The number of times I've stopped next to the rack in the shop and the straps have been at or above my head height, and the dress dropping to the floor. I'm 5ft 4. Fairly average I was told. There is no way in a month of Sundays those dresses are going to fit me without lopping off a couple of feet.

Moln · 14/05/2013 20:05

5' 3" and size 12, find the majority of maxis fine in length even with flats. I've slim hips too (large feck off waist though!!!).

However I have been informed I've long legs for my height

It would make sense to offer different lenght skirts though. Doubt it'd happen though seeing sizing differs between shops (and even in the same shop!!)

FatherHankTree · 14/05/2013 20:06

Definitely way too long. The dresses are taller than me (4' 11"). I wish hobbitwear would become fashionable.

Wommer · 14/05/2013 20:08

No! They're too bloody short!
Tell you what... Chop the bottom off your and post it to me Grin

of course me being 6 ft tall has nothing to do with anything!

Autumn12 · 14/05/2013 20:13

I'm 5ft 8 or thereabouts and find them too short. They look awful when they show the feet and a bit of ankle.

RememberingMyPFEs · 14/05/2013 20:18

5'1" here and I could make another skirt with the amount I chop off. Plus some have a pattern or hem that is ruined by alteration.
Blumming annoying - why can't they do different lengths?!

BergholtStuttleyJohnson · 14/05/2013 20:44

YABU to think 5ft 5 is short, you're taller than the average woman Grin. YANBU about the maxi dresses, I'm 5ft and they just swamp me and trail on the floor. They should come in different lengths like jeans do.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 14/05/2013 21:01

Really?!

What's average then?

Corygal · 14/05/2013 21:20

Another vote for the White Company maxidresses. New Look are not ludicrously long either.

Moln · 14/05/2013 21:21

From a BBC article in 2010

" The average woman in England weighed 11 stone (70.2kg) and was 5ft 3in tall (161.6cm)"

Info for the article taken from the release of figures by the Office for National Statistics, and despite it saying England the stats relate to Engkand and Wales

bulletwithbutterflywings · 14/05/2013 21:25

I'm 5'8 and they're usually too short.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 14/05/2013 21:35

Wow, moln. I had no idea of that. I think I heard the stats for my generation being higher than that and somehow assumed that was for all generations when it isn't.

Thanks!

Moln · 14/05/2013 21:38

I too thought thw average height of a woman was higher!!! I had 5' 6" or 7" in my mind for some reason

Remotecontrolduck · 14/05/2013 21:40

I'm 4' 11' and can usually find skirts to fit in the petite section or certain styles of normal sized ones! I have long-ish legs given how short i am though

Maxi dresses that fit are much more difficult to find though, I usually stick to skirts.

pointythings · 14/05/2013 21:42

I find that Yours has nice long Maxi dresses. Not great if you're a small size though, as they are a 'fat' shop. I am fat as well as tall, so they work for me. Based on this thread, I have just ordered three maxi dresses off their site, the shortest of which is 58" long. Should be great for the summer, and they all have proper sleeves so I can wear them to work Grin.

GibberTheMonkey · 14/05/2013 21:55

Another 5ft 11 skirts too short

Op if you're 5ft and have 5 inches spare on skirts where are you looking because they should fit most of us 5ft11ers who struggle

Mamafratelli · 14/05/2013 21:56

I'm 5ft 1 the maxi dresses hung up are actually taller than me Blush

HerrenaHarridan · 14/05/2013 22:29

If you have a broach that will go with the dress / skirt you can use it to bring it up in th middle a little so you don't trip. Just experiment with different ways of twisting the fabric until you find what works for you.

Alternatively, put it on, put your arms by your sides, without reaching down pinch a bit of skirt and then twist a little. Put a little stitch here (from the inside with matching thread) nothing fancy just literally tie a knot with thread and maybe go over 3/4 times.

If your worried about it showing take the opportunity to be sewing a little flower/ bead/ bell etc on.

Can be repeated on front and back by turning it round.

Hope that helps Smile

LollipopViolet · 14/05/2013 22:45

I'm 5 foot 2. The only way I could wear maxi dresses would b to perfect the art of stilt-walking Grin

Gossipmonster · 14/05/2013 22:47

They cover a lot of sins - but highlight a lot of others.

I don't think anyone should wear them :)
