...and it jumps up half alive and stings the wrong person?

I want those little bleeders dead.

Sorry. Wasp chaos today!

Love bees, don't mind wasps this time of year as they have a job to do but at the end of the summer when they are hot & over tired grump bags, then and only then do I smack them.

But please make sure your killing wasps not honey bees or solitary bees they look a bit similar and bees need all the help they can get. Bees are responsible for 2 out of 3 mouthfuls of food we eat and are massively in decline.

Ask the kid, respectfully, to 'man up, wet pants'. Really? To a child with a phobia?'

Have they actually got a phobia? Or just a fear of something?

Could have been a golden chance to square their fear away.

My children will be taught to control their fear.

Not run around, letting fear control them.

Bit of coaching and, most importantly, confidence in teh adult and kids will do anything and overcome all manner of things.

Yellow and black, this tiny thing's
A tiger-soul on elfin wings.

IMO that just makes elves and tigers bastards then, because there's no way wasps aren't.

"Man up, wet pants"?

What an arsehole.

The wasps are the pollinators of the fruit trees...think on.

I will kill a wasp if its in my house only if I can't persuade it to fly out first. I also will kill mosquitoes because if I am bitten, I end up on antibiotics. Big fat flies also have to go, again I will try to usher then out, but they almost seem like they don't WANT to go out.

Is it true, that at the end of summer, wasps get drunk on rotten fruit and are more likely to be aggressive?

Lazarus yes she does have a full-blown phobia.

I've worked with children for over ten years and I am well aware of how to help them control their fears, thanks. And funnily enough none of the advice regarding the treatment of phobias includes "tell them to man up, wetpants". One possible method is desensitisation but they recommend slow and gradual exposure rather than a sudden shock - or personal insults.

What a loss to the world of psychology you are...maybe you should stick to insects.

SirChenjin and LadyBeagle my thoughts exactly!

I find the battery operated spider catchers (from a well known supplier Grin) great for catching unwanted insects and putting them outside. I tend not to kill things anyway - live and live and all that - but also it's easier than flailing around with a newspaper or tea cloth trying to swat them.

On Thursday, when I got out of the shower, there was a wasp just say there on my towel, waiting for me. Little fucker. I hate wasps. I have guilt in killing or maiming all that I come in contact with.

Shoddy parenting isn't though Lazaruss

I don't have the same expertise in that as you seem to SirChenjin.

Never mind Lazaruss, stick around for long enough and I'm sure that you will eventually learn and benefit from those of us whose parenting approaches are more effective than yours are at this stage.

You seem so sure.

SirChenjin · 05/05/2013 09:03

Obviously I can't be sure that you will eventually learn and benefit, but I do hope so.

I meant you seem so sure that you, yourself, are good at this 'parenting' lark.

I try not to kill anything but we had a very large wasp pop out if our light fitting at midnight 2 months ago... Wtf!!! We tried everything to get it out if the bedroom but panicked and killed it. It is my fear which results in the occasional one being killed

However, yesterday one flew in the patio door and I got a baby bowl and put it over it and got it out of the house

SirChenjin that happened to me in the car, thankfully I wasn't driving! I grabbed my trouser leg and crushed it but I still have a scar from one of the stings!

I had what i thought was a wasp come and land next to me the other day, very close so i took a picture of it (mainly to proove im not terrified of them like i was when i was younger!) showed my sister the picture later and she said uhhh thats a honeybee. i didnt really know the difference, so if i was an irrational wasp splatterer id have killed a valuable honeybee

Oh I am good at this 'parenting' lark Lazaruss. Otoh, someone who takes the "man up, wet pants" approach to a child who is terrified of wasps is not.
