To be exhausted by constant competetiveness from some people?

Ok I am not anti-competetion and I think that a proper 1st, 2nd and 3rd is good but it is the petty one-upmanship between everday folk that gets to me:
Competetive parenting, gardening, homeownership, smugness, bullying, competetive misery, bitchyness, wieght-loss gain, clothes labels etc. Everyone just STOOOOOOOOP!
Can't stop the course of human nature I guess but OMG sometimes it just gets a bit wearing.

Ooh - Hest - another Cornubian - proving my point Smile

HesterShaw · 25/04/2013 22:33

Yes. We are all lovely. Much lovelier than people from other places.

My sister is like this - she is relentless. We call her Tommy (2 shits) behind her back.

elQuintoConyo · 25/04/2013 22:43

A swift, "really, I don't give a shiny shit" usually stops them in their tracks Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 25/04/2013 22:43

Sparkling I think I have your cats twin! Shock :o

DomesticCEO · 25/04/2013 22:44

Sorry, should have clarified that I clearly have the prettiest cat Grin.

Hester, I agree about not joining in but this particular 'friend' was pretty horrible with her competitiveness which is why she's an ex-friend.

CrapBag · 25/04/2013 22:47

Ugghhh yes totally agree.

In my group of friends, all of our first borns are now at school. 2 friends always go on about how their children are in the top group and what reading levels they are on (my child is also in the top group but I don't feel the need to bang on about it), how clever they are and how well they are getting on. 1 came out with the gem that her DD is bored (clearly because of her superior intelligence - this was definitely inferred) at school. I secretely think that while her DD is clever, maybe she isn't that academic and thats why she isn't interested in school?

The weight loss ones!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. If I hear the words slimming world and syns again I am going to scream. I actually say something every time now, gets on my fucking tits!

Samnella · 25/04/2013 22:52

Yanbu.

My husband and I made friends with a group of parents when our son began school. Despite all living on the same street in the same houses every conversation was about who had the most expensive house etc. I stopped seeing them in the end and even told one of them why. It was liberating. We have moved now but for about two years we just said hi and that was enough.life is too short.

I have noticed my close friends are the least competitive. I have others who I like but their one upmanship always causes a barrier.

HesterShaw · 25/04/2013 22:52

I simply can't imagine being like that. How weird!

MostPeopleAreMad · 25/04/2013 22:53

Ooh, Sparkling, now, that really is a very, very pretty cat. I haven't figured out yet how to upload photos Blush but my cat is also very pretty, honest... Domestic Our cats clearly have a rival in the prettiness stakes Grin

Mintyy · 25/04/2013 22:57

I find this interesting. I hardly ever notice anyone being competitive.

Recently we were away with family and my dh was having a really hard time getting on with sil. I asked him why and he said its because she's so competitive. He cited a few examples of her competitive behaviour and I had not even noticed! But then dh is a competitive person, where I couldn't be less competitive if I tried.

That's a very long-winded way for me to say that I think only competitive people really notice competitive behaviour in others.

DomesticCEO · 25/04/2013 23:04

MostPeople, nah, mine's still the prettiest Wink.

Mintyy, I kind of see where you're coming from and I can be competitive in some ways but this particular friend was just beyond belief. I think anyone would have noticed her competitiveness as it was soooo over the top. I know if we'd stayed friends she would have constantly compared our DC unfavourably and I would have had to have killed her Grin.

WilsonFrickett · 25/04/2013 23:15

I'm super-competitive Sad it's the thing I like least about myself. I think it's because no-one gave a shiny shit about me when I was growing up, so I started an internal soundtrack which was basically about bigging myself up. And then I started sharing it externally. It's not very nice though, is it?

::I hate it more than you, obviously::

MostPeopleAreMad · 25/04/2013 23:44

Trying very hard to upload photo of my very pretty (if not quite as pretty as Domestic's Grin) cat but failing dismally - photo keeps coming up sideways on (or something - it's late and I'm tired), which makes it hard to appreciate cat's loveliness...

MrsKoala · 26/04/2013 00:07

it's really bizarre isn't it. I've recently joined a group of people, all are lovely apart from one who is so competitive we are all left Shock at her. If it's not the best then it's the worst, and then she has it the hardest etc

When i got engaged she asked to see my ring and pulled a sour face at it. Looked visibly narked and said 'i could have had one like that but my hands are so slim and dainty it looked ridiculous, so i just decided to have a bigger house' (i have a tiny house) i answered 'i just wanted something i could pawn easily'

Emilythornesbff · 26/04/2013 03:59

Grin at "stole them from a nursing home".

I don't think I know anyone like this. Am I missing out? Smile

Sparklingbrook · 26/04/2013 09:19

*Emily as we don't know anyone like this it must be us that are the boasty ones. Shock

Schro that is Sparkling Cat's twin!! Awww is it a boy or girl? Is it a pedigree? (Sparkling Cat just a moggie but thinks she's posh) Grin

MostPeopleAreMad · 26/04/2013 09:37

Ha! I have FINALLY managed to upload cat photo that isn't the wrong way up Smile

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 26/04/2013 09:42

It's a girl. :) Is yours? No idea if she's a pedigree, we got her from someone who wasn't treating her well. :(

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 26/04/2013 09:43

Oh my! Most Your cat is gorgeous too!

Sparklingbrook · 26/04/2013 09:46

Yes, a girl Schro. We had her from a rescue so no idea of her roots. People ask if she is a Russian Blue, but I don't think so as her pads are grey (mauve for a Russian Blue), but one or other parent may have been. She has the most beautiful temperament.
Sad at not 'treating her well'.

Most that is one very pretty cat. Smile

Overreactionoftheweek · 26/04/2013 09:50

Wilson, I'm just like you! (Although probably more competitive obviously)

My sil, who I strongly dislike, has just had her pfb, mine is 18 months - my internal dialogue about who's best is just shameful Blush

I try very hard to hide just how competitive I am. Dh knows and lets me rant my nonsense every so often so I don't explode!

But if we ever play board games, watch out people! I will OWN YOU.

It's definitely to do with low self esteem and not getting enough attention from my parents as a child

MostPeopleAreMad · 26/04/2013 09:51

Thanks, Schro, he is rather lovely, isn't he? - and so's yours! Such beautiful eyes!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 26/04/2013 09:53

We thought she was a russian blue (or part) her pads aren't quite grey and she has the light stripes on her tail.

No idea though, the people we got her from were re-homing her as they said she was too violent and they were worried about her attacking their toddler, she wouldn't be in the room with anyone without attacking them, they said they found her in a bin and her Mother was dead. Hmm

We took her and she changed completely, she was obviously depressed when we got her, missing a tooth, gum disease and un-neutered. We sorted all that, gave her loads of love and now she's the biggest lapcat ever and the only one of my 3 who actually likes my toddler! Funny that, eh?

Your cat is beautiful! Wink

Most Your cat has the most adorable face.
