To buy my son a dolly?

slatternlymother · 23/04/2013 15:24

Following on from SP's spoof baby thread, it seems like loads of your boys have dollies! My DS is 2.5.

I really want to buy him a baby dolly. DH was a bit 'where's the point? You're just buying him one to make a point'.

But I think, he's going to (hopefully) be a Daddy himself one day, and he's already got a kitchen. DH was a bit Hmm about that one too, until I asked him why he thought cooking was women's work Grin and he has since admitted that it is the best toy for DS ever, who absolutely loves it.

So AIBU to call my DH over this one as well, and go and buy DS a dolly, even if DH makes faces?

If he'd like a doll, get him a doll. DS has a couple of dolls I picked up cheaply - I have since been Shock at the cost of dolls' clothes though, so I'd recommend getting a doll that will fit the generic supermarket dolls' clothes.

noblegiraffe · 23/04/2013 15:29

My boy doesn't have a dolly. I have to confess that I find baby dolls really creepy so would be reluctant to buy one for a girl either (my DD is 3 months old, will have to cross that bridge when I come to it!)

My DS does plenty of role playing with his cuddly toys, and he can play with dollies at the childminder and Pre school so I don't think he's missing out!

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/04/2013 15:31

Does he want one? Currently DD LOVES her Mr Potato Head. She picked it, she loves it. I am baffled. If he wants one, YANBU, if he doesn't, YABU.

mrsjay · 23/04/2013 15:31

noble my dd never had dollies she was terrified of them Grin OP it isnt making a point imo if he is interested in dolls then get him 1, where iw ork it is the little toddler boys who fight the little toddler girls for the dolls and prams Grin

imour · 23/04/2013 15:32

agree with your husband seems like you are just trying to make a point .

slatternlymother · 23/04/2013 15:33

He's never asked for one specifically, but then he doesn't ask for anything tbh.

brown which doll would you recommend?

My son, 19mths, has lots of cuddly toys and a dolly. He loves anything pink and sparkly too. I see no issue in it.

ItsYoniYappy · 23/04/2013 15:34

I didn't buy my DD a 'dolly' but he had a teletubby in his his blue buggy. My friend had a little girl his age and she had one so he wanted one. He played with it a lot then broke it during a temper tantrum.

I stopped at buying him a play kitchen this year. He will be 9. He has a play-house but usually throws wood around in it and climbs on the roof, or locks his friends in.

Then comes home and plays with his tin of moshlings and moshie monsters.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2013 15:34

YANBU. DS2 had a doll's buggy and pushed his bear around in it. It went everywhere. He didn't ask for a Baby Annabelle but I would have got him one if he wanted one. Grin

He also had a kitchen, microwave and toy hoover.

slatternlymother · 23/04/2013 15:35

imour I'm not sure; I buy him toys because... they're toys I suppose. Because they're nice things to have, you know?

But then, how do I know he won't like it unless I offer it?

Maybe you're right Confused

DS is terrified of dollys tbh! His friend told him some crazy story about mine at my mums, she has to take them away at night or he cannot sleep, it's their faces apparently Hmm

KirjavaTheCat · 23/04/2013 15:37

My son wants one with a buggy, that he saw in the charity shop. It was old and battered that I didn't buy it, but definitely on the lookout for a nice one. Already has a kitchen - OH picked it actually! It's very red and unisex Grin

mrsjay · 23/04/2013 15:38

dd got 1 that cried one christmas she opened it the thing cried she threw it away that was that then Grin

TeWiSavesTheDay · 23/04/2013 15:40

My DS is 1 and likes to play with his older sister's dolls, I'm planning on getting him one this year before his younger sibling is born so he can copy me with something a bit less delicate than a newborn!

If you go to any playgroups that have them, why not get them out and see if he is interested?

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 23/04/2013 15:41

DS has a dolls' house and used to have a little baby doll but got bored of it. My advice is stick to charity shops for toys at this age (unless it's something they desperately want and you know it'll last them a decent amount of time). No problem in buying him a doll but be prepared for it to be neglected Wink

slatternlymother · 23/04/2013 15:41

kirjava my DS' kitchen is red as well; he LOVES it!

I suppose I think; if DS was a DD, then I would have probably bought her 2 or 3 dollies by now, and a cot and a pram.

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 23/04/2013 15:41

My son has a doll, pram and bottle. The pram is pibk but he nicked it from my mums.

wilkos do clothes and nappies for dolls which he will get next.

his dad thinks 'it will make him gay'. I soon shut him up with that shit when I said you pushed him around in a pram, fed him and changed his nappy, img you are gay!

Hes an arsehole.

Flisspaps · 23/04/2013 15:41

Why wouldn't you? Does your DH have an issue with toy prams and kitchens too? I'd hazard a guess that it's ok for him to cook a meal or push a pushchair...

WorraLiberty · 23/04/2013 15:42

I agree with you DH about 'making a point'.

I'm a bit meh about it really

Either buy it or don't but it's not a big deal. Boys have been playing with their sister's dolls since they were first made.

Sugarice · 23/04/2013 15:42

Mt ds2 had a doll that he loved to wear in a baby carrier, whilst wearing his army camouflage dressing up outfit. Grin.

slatternlymother · 23/04/2013 15:43

itsokay I thought I'd just go for one of that soft £10 jobs from Tesco for now if I did get him one.

I know he likes prams; I've seen him racing them at nursery, with or without a dolly in them.

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 23/04/2013 15:44

Sorry about the mini rant about the ex Grin Still a wank stain though

slatternlymother · 23/04/2013 15:47

SP not at all. Grin

I wasn't trying to make a point, I was actually walking over to pick one up and DH said 'who's that for?' I said it was for DS, and DH made a Hmm face and said 'I think you're just trying to make a point because he's a boy'.

I was just picking it because it looked nice and soft to cuddle and might teach him about being kind to babies (we aren't having any more). And because it's another toy, really.

Now I've asked MN to see if I am BU and now it looks like I'm making a point out of it... I'm actually not trying to Blush

K8Middleton · 23/04/2013 15:48

I got one for ds when i bought his toy buggy. He had coveted a buggy for weeks.

He sometimes likes the doll, other times not so much. Although it has changed names from 'baby' to 'baby gym Jim' and is now named after his 5mo sister Hmm

piprabbit · 23/04/2013 15:48

I bet you wouldn't be putting so much thought and angst into buying a doll for a girl.
If you've got the money and think there is reasonable chance your DS will like it then just buy him one. If he doesn't play with it, pass it along to someone else's child who will enjoy it more.

It really isn't a big deal.
