The Fabian society has suggested that wealthy pensioners pay more tax.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-22220345

Some how I can't see a conservative wanting to tax wealthy pensioners more when they all vote Tory.

I find it unfair that pensioners with an income more the average family's income get free bus buses, winter fuel allowance, TV licence as well as paying less tax and national insurance. It is about time that the the wealthy pensioners took their share of the pain of the cuts.

I am in favour of well off pensioners having free bus passes, winter fuel allowance as these things encourage independence and improve health. I would like to see the money for these things clawed back by WEALTHY pensioners paying more income tax.

Complaining about what???
Are you serious?

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:45

Think I've simply questioned wealthy pensioners not contributing.

Right the question was.

If pensioners as a demographic aren't to be discussed or included at all in relation to reducing the ever increasing trillions where is the money going to come from?

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:48

Janey I think you need to calm down,we know you despise sahm and think we're all lazy, latte swilling manicure addicts however your bullying histrionic posts are rather unpleasant.

ihategeorgeosborne · 24/04/2013 21:49

handcream, if you came to our small 3 bed house and actually looked around, you would not think for one minute that we are wealthy. In fact, I think most of the families in our area think we are poor when they come here. We live very cheaply on one income. We have one 12 year old car. I meal plan very carefully and cook from scratch. I buy our clothes either very cheap in the sales or from charity shops. We don't have any sky packages and my mobile is a very crap PAYG, which I hardly ever use. Friends don't text me anymore as I never text back. I'm not sure what else we can cut back on. Yes, we had 3 dcs. You would think that someone on 50k could afford to after all. Yes, we factored in CB, why wouldn't we have. In fact it was cut when I found out I was pregnant with dc3. I'm not saying we're on the bread line, but in this climate, with high rents to pay, we are really not living the high life no matter what anyone may think.

jacks365 · 24/04/2013 21:50

Square but they are contributing. They are having personal allowances cut to bring them in line to working people. They pay the same tax rates so their tax burden has increased.

Still think the fairest thing would be to up tax rates

janey68 · 24/04/2013 21:51

Ha ha good try square pebbles.
I don't despise SAHM at all. I was one myself 4 days a week (and a WOHM 3 days ) when my kids were tiny. I just didn't expect anyone else to fund that choice for me Smile

ihategeorgeosborne · 24/04/2013 21:51

As square says though, if we don't touch wealthy pensioners what do we cut? Who will they come after next?

handcream · 24/04/2013 21:52

Square and george - you seem to have an issue with poeople reaching retirement and seemigly getting something for nothing.

I am sorry to be blunt but you aren't working..... Isn't this pot calling kettle black!

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:52

George you're scaring me now, that is our life bar having a baby.Smile

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:53

Errr Janey I don't and considering you got CB you got funded a lot more than me.

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:54

Hand cuts to us have been made soooooo.......

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:54

Oh and you still aren't answered my question.

janey68 · 24/04/2013 21:55

I don't get CB- I've had it cut.
Your fixation with thinking everyone else is better off than you are is bordering on paranoia!

Portofino · 24/04/2013 21:56

wealthy Pensioners pay tax on their income! Square, you seem to be obtusely ignoring this fact.

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:57

Paranoia really ?Hmm

So you didn't get it when your kids were tiny?

handcream · 24/04/2013 21:58

George - really are you serious. You wonder how we can tap the people with money, the pensioners etc. One other way is for YOU to work perhaps...

Somehow, I feel a 'yes but....' From you!

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:58

Nope just asking how else they could contribute after all we all pay tax.

janey68 · 24/04/2013 21:58

Yeap I did get CB then- and you know what? It didn't even make a dent in nursery fees 51 weeks a year. So you really don't need to feel bitter.

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 21:59

So hand my question?

ihategeorgeosborne · 24/04/2013 22:00

handcream, I really don't have an issue with people reaching retirement age. You seem to have an issue with me for being a SAHM and being supported finacially by my husband. Surely that is better than expecting the state to step in instead? My MIL didn't work either though, so what's the difference between her and me. We've both lived the same life surely. The difference is that they've done very well from house price inflation and we haven't been able to buy a house. Why is she more worthy of WFA, etc than I am of CB? I don't see the difference.

Portofino · 24/04/2013 22:00

Square, but you don't pay tax.

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 22:01

For only 3 days a week?Come, come it must have made a tiny dent.

Squarepebbles · 24/04/2013 22:02

Port I have,I will and my dp does thanks to me.

And what George said- with bells on.

Hands still no answer.

jacks365 · 24/04/2013 22:03

Ok how about scrap wfa and free travel and tv licences, free prescriptions etc and target them by increasing pension credit not sure how effective that would be cost wise. Wouldn't make much of a dent but would stop some people feeling so hard done by.

janey68 · 24/04/2013 22:05

Yes squarepebbles , a tiny dent. Day nursery fees for 2 children for 3 days a week were about £240 per week. All year round bar Christmas week and bank hols. Do the sums. Child benefit barely touched it.
