To be sad that meat is security protected?

Bought a pack of chicken valued at 3.15 and it had a sticker on saying "security protected". Which leads me to think the supermarket (tesco) feels customers might steal it and that makes me feel all kinds of sad and wrong

A lot of the people I deal with in my job shoplift, and meat is a really popular thing to steal, along with cheese. It has a good resale value to it, and is easy to flog in pubs etc.
In my experience, most people nicking food will be selling it, rather than eating it themselves. Although with welfare reform etc, I wouldn't be surprised if there are people stealing food to feed their families as well.

meat is a huge theft line for supermarkets
I was in Morrisons once and there was a guy on his phone pretending to talk to someone about what they were having for tea -lamb or steak
because of the position of his arm & coat it was concealing the fact that he was filling his bag full of very expensive cuts of meat
was quite funny watching the manager chase him across the carpark
there are some areas where people go door to door selling stolen stuff, meat, cheese, coffee, airsfresheners, batteries -they are all fair game now razor blades are so heavily protected

Our little local Co-Op had gammon joints on sale for £5. I put one in my basket and the assistant laughed (nicely) and said I was the first person who'd actually paid for one, the rest had all been stolen. One person slung a load in a wheeled basket and ran off down the road with them! They sell them on, though, they're not to eat.
