To be sad that meat is security protected?

Bought a pack of chicken valued at 3.15 and it had a sticker on saying "security protected". Which leads me to think the supermarket (tesco) feels customers might steal it and that makes me feel all kinds of sad and wrong Hmm

The lego mini figures & moshi monsters are security tagged in the tesco near us.

Clouds, would you steal to feed your family? Meat or otherwise?

If I was that desperate, of course I would steal food for my family. But it would take a lot to get to being that desperate, we have a benefit system, we have food banks, we have various charities, and thankfully for many of us we have friends and family. I honestly can't imagine being that desperate, which I realise makes me very lucky, but you would have to literally have nothing except the clothes you were wearing to get to that stage. As has been said, even the homeless have access to a meal.

I would beg before I would steal.

If I really was forced to steal or starve, I can't imagine that I'd have the facilities to cook fresh meat. I'd be stealing bread or sandwiches I should imagine, stuff that doesn't need to be cooked.

Gillette razors are also security protected

Mind you, I was reading in my local paper last month about a woman who was caught stealing £70 worth of vitamins from the local supermarket.

Turns out, it was only 12 bottles so they were bloody pricey too.

I once saw a man get pulled by security in Tesco for having a leg of lamb stuffed down his trouser leg.

Not sure how he got it down there Shock

I was accosted by someone who wanted to sell me some packs of deli meat they had obviously stolen. This was a few weeks ago and it looked a bit sweaty to say the least. Needless to say I declined the generous offer of his armpit meat plus multipack of scrotal choccy bars.

If I didn't have the money to feed my DC's properly, with a BALANCED diet, damn straight I would be shoplifting fresh or frozen meat, fruit and vegetables to feed them. Or breaking into a posh house and stealing the contents of their fridge, freezer and fruit bowl but nothing else.

I wouldn't steal money or jewellery, but I would steal food, in order to feed my DC's a properly balanced diet.

I'm not going to, even when in dire straits, feed them plain pasta and bread and butter and nothing else every single day.

I've done that before when that hard up, for a whole 6 months when my TC's weren't paid to me due to a 'computer error'.

My DC's were malnourished. They didn't grow AT ALL for those 6 months. So damn straight my DC's would be getting a properly balanced diet, even if I had to beg or steal to do so in future, now I have seen the effects, that rectified within weeks of them starting to eat a balanced diet again.

(That situation was only resolved with the help of my MP, and I did get the backpay at the end of the 6 months, but that didn't help me feed my DC's at the time!)

Yeah, I'd steal fresh or frozen meat, fruit, and vegetables to feed my DC's a balanced diet. And next time I won't think twice about it!

snooter that's completely ironic that the suncream in N.East is protected considering the amount of orange people walking around who've just been to tantastic. Based solely on observation NOT stereotypes. Bet the protected stuff differs regionally though.

You need to sit in the down market pubs around any shopping area and then you would be used to addicts coming in with all sorts to sell. OP you have got this mixed up as those buying the stolen goods have just spent a good amount of money in said pub, there is no poverty involved, just addiction.
I've bought off the women who sell the make up, I don't any more. This has been common place in Liverpool since the 80's, when a lifter gets caught they get barred, so they have to travel further away. Most have their weeks planned out, although it isn't as easy as it once was.

People aren't stealing food to feed their families. I know women who used to steal nappies to sell on, because they knew they'd get less of a sentence and be seen as victims if they stole goods that could be passed off for their families. Whole rows of small retailers closed in places like Huyton and Kirkby because of these vultures, I mention these places because I know this as fact. The only plus side is that whilst the women are successful shop lifters they are not working the streets.

I know you feel Sad but as has been said before food is stolen to sell rather than eat mostly, people will steal dry goods to use like razors and nappies so dd told me she did a training on shop lifting at her work

Couthy Sad Sounds horrendous. I always wonder how civil servants/ministers expect people to cope when they delay benefits. It wouldn't be fine to just tell them they will get 6 months back pay later and they have so many more resources than those who are receiving benefits.

That's just it, MrsH, the people affected simply don't have reserves to wait. I'm lucky enough to have family around me who would and have helped through the bad times. But I have to say I can see where Couthy is coming from, I think I probably would consider stealing food if I had exhausted all other options.

I didn't last time, I felt a moral obligation - instead I survived on food parcels from friends - who were also on benefits, so it was very very basic value pasta and bread.

But having seen the effects on my DC's in the past, I would no longer put my morals above feeding my DC's.

I just hope I'm never left in that situation again. I get nervous around TC renewal time every damn year now because of what happened - I put my renewal in, and their computer suddenly didn't accept my bank account that I had been using with them for years.

It's not something I'm 'proud' to admit to, that I know in my heart that I would steal food for my DC's if I was ever in that situation, but I know I wouldn't be selling it on, I wouldn't be doing it because of any addiction (gave up smoking in 2009, don't drink due to meds, don't take drugs other than those prescribed by my GP), it would purely be to feed my DC's a balanced diet.

Fingers crossed it never gets to that - there are more good banks now...

I was in Oxfam yesterday and the assistant said they have to keep the CDs under the counter, separate from the boxes on display because people steal them. Stealing from charity shops is just the saddest. I wonder how you could get to the point in your life when you think that's the right thing to do?

HmmHmmHmm

BumpingFuglies · 22/04/2013 15:15

I don't think anyone is saying it would be the right thing to do, just desperate in relation to food. No excuse with CDs though.

I've just seen the post about the waste food from supermarkets being injected with dye. That's sad because a lot of it is perfectly edible. My eldest son and his friends used to go 'bin diving' for food when they were at uni. He didn't tell me for a long time, he thought I'd be cross, but TBH, I found the wastage more horrifying than him taking the food (although, I accept that what he was doing was stealing).
