DD is 7 months, I've just left the doctors after dropping dd from sofa height onto the floor.
She is fine, I am heartbroken and disgusted with myself. I feel like the worst parent ever. How could I have done that?
It could have been so serious, luckily.it not.

I haven't dropped DD yet (she is 32 months) however I did drop a phone on her head and impale her leg on my fingernail and I've misjudged a few doorways in my time too.

She is pretty good at damaging herself though!

marriedinwhiteagain · 19/04/2013 22:44

I fell over whilst carrying my 18 month old ds and he hit his head on the pavement. He was fine. I also once got hold of his hand and pulled him towards me, forgetting he was wearing a temporary cast on a broken arm. Now that hurt and he yelled at me for a full five minutes still not sure if that's why it had to be rebroken and reset under GA after the follow up appointment Sad

Sallystyle · 19/04/2013 22:49

I once kinda threw one of mine.

You know how when you trip up and your instinct is to hold onto your child? well mine messed up. I tripped over a plug and instead of holding onto my then baby I kinda threw him down.

I was devastated with myself but now we laugh about the time I threw him.

Beamur · 19/04/2013 22:53

Anyone who denies ever accidentally hurting their child is probably feeling too guilty to admit it!
Having been appalled by my Mums revelation that she walked into a door frame and whacked my head (as a 1 week old baby) so hard I was concussed, I did something vaguely similar to my own child...lack of spacial awareness must be genetic.

seriouscakeeater · 19/04/2013 23:02

I burnt my DD Sad Shock I was taking sausages out from under the grill and she has sneaked up behind me in her walker and didn't see/hear her and when I turned round tripped over her, splashing hot fat on her neck!

I was beside my self! Rushed her to the doctors and they dressed it and calmed me down. DD didn't even cry that much

Some years later whilst waiting to see the doctor, I was actually handed her notes, so I had a quick read and actually seen written down ..'mother scolded neck with hot fat' BlushSad

she is fine though!

CautionaryWhale · 19/04/2013 23:13

Hello OP
Hope you are feeling better. The reason someone asked whether it was your first baby I think is because the first one you panic like mad and feel like the world's worst mother, the second one you still cry and feel guilty but forgive yourself a little quicker and the third - mine is due in 6 weeks - you've been there, bought the tshirt (mine says my mum is fully expecting to drop me like she did the other two!!!) Wink

So DC1 - banged by me against door frame 6 weeks
car keys dropped on head 7 weeks
rolled off futon sofa 9 weeks
fell off bed 9 months
i woke up disorientated saying That's not my baby! 1year
given too much medecine by me 18 months
Let go of the handle on her tricycle on a hill to go faster 2 years Mummy did it! she told everyone in tesco...

DC2 - dropped onto floor by DC1 9 weeks
tumbled headfirst onto concrete 7 months
rolled off futon sofa 8 months
fell off bed 10 months
fell against table when cruising 11 months
fell into and broke shards off plastic playbox 2 years
knocked tea out of DC1s hand 27 months
fell off bed last week trampolining on it 28 months
fell against table last week when balancing on bench 28 months

You're welcome! Grin

CautionaryWhale · 19/04/2013 23:15

medicine

and feel need to point out both my children are fine, honest guv! Smile

Scrutler · 19/04/2013 23:21

I tripped over DD1 when carrying DD2 in sling and landed flat on top of her on pavement when she was 3 months old. Was pretty awful at the time (couple days in intensive care, surgery to repair fractured skull and then Infantile Spasms a few months later). She's now 5 and absolutlely fine. I'm fairly sure i still managed to let her roll off beds a coupe times even after this happened.

Virtually everyone i spoke to at the time had story about injuring their child (falling down stairs and landing ON baby and breaking his leg, doctor at hospital falling backwards in Alps with child in back carrier etc etc)

CautionaryWhale · 19/04/2013 23:21

Ooh ooh i almost forgot (puts on columbo hat)
Your nerves might be shot but your reflexes do improve
DH always says to me Well caught madam or well held madam as you prevent more than you cause!
Two occasions I have had two black bruisy knees having held both kids aloft like the world cup (think the platoon pose) having slipped on black ice one time and had kiddy lurch forward second time. On those occasions you feel in agony like the best mum in the world or at least as good as an england goalie

Take care xx

flyingspaghettimonster · 19/04/2013 23:26

I was in a fastfood place with my kids heading for the play area when i saw a child projectile vomit in there. I tried catch up to my son and yelled "stop right now! Don't you dare go in!" as he ignored keep and aimed straight for the disease ridden kid and the puddle of vomit. I managed to grab an arm and he kept running, but i stopped. So he reached the end of his fforward movement, then got pulled back suddenly and swung right into a huge wooden bin!! He got an instant black eye and was sobbing saying "why did you hurt me mommy?!" so everyone in there probably thought i punched him or something. I felt so bad... I had only been trying to prevent us all catching lurgy...

Startail · 19/04/2013 23:28

I managed to slip on a very slippery path with DD1 in a useless second hand back carrier. It went over my head and she landed on hers. She was absolutely fine. The carrier went in the bin.

It was hopeless anyway, I only bought it to use in town as my big alteraun pram was very long. However, DD1 took being high and out of sight as the perfect invert action to shop lift.

Invitation

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 19/04/2013 23:45

DH threw DS1 up in the air (7 months old) and FORGOT to catch him!

Oh and a couple of years later threw 18 month old DD2 in the air (see a pattern here?) and as he caught her, dislocated her shoulder Shock

Both have survived :D

IsThatTrue · 19/04/2013 23:49

Oh and I've dropped my phone on ds2s head while MNing in the middle night!! Blush

aldiwhore · 19/04/2013 23:50

I dislocated my youngest son's elbow! I am not a bad mother and it was due to me trying to STOP him falling off the bed instinctively - I should have let him fall really, he would have had no more than a bump, but I tried to stop him falling and ended up pulling his arm and dislocating it Sad I then, in my utter panic made everything a while lot worse for him by strapping up the WRONG ARM when I took him to A&E, so imagine... there's me being OH so gentle with what I thought was his hurt arm, and bending his dislocated one as normal to get him in the car seat.

And you think you're a bad mother? Bless you. You really are not. Smile

Also when my eldest was a new new baby, I carried him upstairs to his cot, he was fast alseep, cradled in my arms... I misjudged the extra width to get through the door and clonked his head on the door frame. Shock

My children are 9 and 5 now and I still apologise to them sometimes when they're sleeping! Blush

SquirrelNuts · 20/04/2013 00:05

Both my DCs have fallen off the bed. Ive also banged DSs head when i took him out of his moses basket somehow i managed to get his arm caught on the handle and bang his head on the fire place, hes still got the tiny scar now Sad. And i banged poor DDs head on the ceiling when i had her on my shoulders. Dont feel bad, i would think at some point everyone has an accident with there DCs

AtiaoftheJulii · 20/04/2013 00:28

When dd1 was about 6 months I stayed at my parents with her, just the two of us in a double bed. Woke up in the morning, no baby - assumed my mum had come in and got her, dozed off again. Woke up a bit later, started to get up, found the baby asleep on the floor!

On holiday with dh and 16 month old dd1, 7 months pg with dd2. Got up on the first morning, and started to carry dd1 down the stairs. Wooden stairs. Whilst wearing socks. I slipped on about the 3rd step down, and grabbed the bannister - unfortunately there was only a rail on one side, and I let go of dd1 to grab it. I'm pretty sure she bounced on her head before she hit the bottom. And then we worried about concussion all day. She was fine. (Apart from running away into the sea!)

unlucky83 · 20/04/2013 00:40

DD1 bounced DD2 off the sofa onto a hard floor at 3 days old ...GP checked her out and was fine ...

Someone I know left DC2 (a month or so old) in a sling on the kitchen table, her DC1 pulled the sling (and DC2) off onto the tiled floor - again no harm done..

Lots of banging heads on door frames, both of them came off a changing table (DD1 twice), actually not surprised DD1 (stroppy hormonal 12 yo) is so unpleasant to me sometimes - I also trapped her fingers in the car door and thumped her in the eye at 18 months tying her shoelace... haven't damaged DD2 anywhere near as much...(she has dislocated both her elbows (pulled elbows) - within a week of each other - first time her dad did it, second time it was me - apparently quite common growth stage where they are susceptible to this -so don't think that was my fault!)

Disappearing · 20/04/2013 00:59

I think dropping from sofa height doesn't even count as dropping, that's, like, about 14"? I wouldn't go to the doc for that.

When I saw your thread title I thought - "no thank goodness I've managed not to drop the DC", but by your conservative definition of a drop, they've both had similar knocks due to my inattention.

My DD fell off a high bed when she was about 8 months old, I got a fright, moreso than she did, but still she did it again a couple of months later Blush.

Have knocked heads off doorframes.

Plus I just remembered I dropped a toddler cousin once when I was about 6 yo.

StrugglingStepMum · 20/04/2013 08:21

I've NEVER confessed to this in RL but..

A couple of years ago I was holding a freibd's newborn. I was about to carry him downstairs when I tripped - they have a tiny ridge on the top step! Thankfully I held on to him, but when I think about how close I came to tumbling down a long flight of wooden stairs with the baby I feel SO sick. He's 3 now and I still cringe slightly when I see him!

youmaycallmeSSP · 20/04/2013 09:17

I don't know any parents who haven't dropped their baby at some point.

DS' first fall was backwards off the sofa at 4 months old. He was sitting on my lap at the time Blush I took him straight to A&E, crying the whole way because SS were going to take my baby away. Needless to say he was fine and they didn't...

His most memorable one was when he was about 9 months old and woke up in the middle of the night wanting to play. We were co-sleeping with DS in the middle so he crawled onto fast-asleep tummy-sleeping DH and bit him on the back. DH woke up with a jerk and sent DS flying across the room onto the floor! DS was outraged but fine.

He's 3 now and I've learned to be very careful when he's going through a growth spurt because he gets very clumsy and can't be trusted in the stairs.
