DD is 7 months, I've just left the doctors after dropping dd from sofa height onto the floor.
She is fine, I am heartbroken and disgusted with myself. I feel like the worst parent ever. How could I have done that?
It could have been so serious, luckily.it not.

SlimFitWellies, I did the Moses basket letting go of handle thing when DS2 was tiny - he tumbled out and whacked his head on the banisters. I howled mire than he did. DS1 cartwheeled down the stairs because DH forgot to close the stair gate. That was bad Hmm

DS3 miraculously unscathed so far

Don't think I have shared this story but imagine how this mother must have felt....

Having a walk along the prom at seaside, breezy day but not overly windy. The prom we are walking on is raised with steep concrete steps leading down to beach, perhaps a drop of 15ft from prom to beach. Ahead of us saw a pram start to roll towards the steps. Mum and dad are bent down engaging with 3/4 yo who has tripped and is crying and don't see the pram start to roll. Me, mum and sister are SCREAMING at the tops of our voices to get their attention and all 3 set off running, (including mum who is in her 70s!) she heard us and caught the pram within seconds of it going down the steps. Baby inside was maybe 4/5 weeks old. The woman was hysterical. I think I had that on my mind all that night.

I once swung dd1s coat round to try and give it her and the zip caught her head... I felt so bloody guilty for months!! Luckily, no harm came to dd1!! She was fine and 5 minutes later was consoling her "silly mummy"!

With dd2, I fell up the stairs, I got to the top and thought there was another step, iyswim. It was 3.30 am and I was knackered with a dd who was refusing to sleep, anyway, I tripped and bashed her into the wall, injuringmy arm at the same time... She was fine, me, not somuch so. I cracked the bone that sticks out of your wrist (can't remember what it's called) it bloody hurt!!

Neither have I'll effects and both are healthy and happy.. I wouldn't worry too much!

formicaqueen · 19/04/2013 18:48

Yes and its' awful. Forgive yourself

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 19/04/2013 18:49

I dropped someone else's baby! Shock FAR worse imo. She'll be fine...don't worry!

MadBusLady · 19/04/2013 18:54

I fell off the changing table when my mum was out of the room.

So did my younger brother actually, so don't necessarily expect to learn from it. Grin

Spikeytree · 19/04/2013 18:57

My sister dropped me down the stairs when I was a baby (she was 8). A few hours at A&E and an x-ray proved I was fine. DSis takes the credit for my academic achievement though - apparently landing on my head stimulated my brain. Grin

Jestrin · 19/04/2013 18:58

DH dropped our 9 day old DS when he slipped the last few steps when going to give him his night feed. He was checked over by GP and he said he was fine. We felt awful for days and spent two nights watching him sleep! So, I think we have all done it and felt awful.

DearPrudence · 19/04/2013 19:00

Yes, I fell and dropped 8 week old DS in his car seat/carrier down some steps. I can vividly remember my howl of anguish - it's not a noise I've made before or since.

Baby was fine.

Jestrin · 19/04/2013 19:02

I forgot to add that DS is now a strapping 13 years old. He was most definitely fine!

OxfordBags · 19/04/2013 19:03

I can say, hand on heart, that I do not know of ANY family where a child hasn't been accidentally dropped or has rolled off something because it was the first time they tried rolling! The latter happened to me - tiny Ds, laid in the centre of the bed, I reached for a tissue to blow my nose, hear a squeal, saw him pitch off the side of the bed. 4 seconds, it took, and it was his first attempt at rolling that I'd seen. Typical! I raced him tearfully to the GP, who told me that they never mind reassuring parents over small matters like that, which was nice.

It is heart-stopping and you feel like the worst scumbag in the world, but they are tough little things and what's more, they won't remember it. If you were a bad mother, you wouldn't feel so bad, think of it that way :)

HearMyRoar · 19/04/2013 19:04

My first ever trip to mum and baby group. I had dd in a sling and on my way in I managed to bash her poor little head on the door. I walked in to everyone staring at me while dd screamed like a banshee and an impressive lump formed on her forehead. Thankfully nobody called ss Blush

Zara1984 · 19/04/2013 19:04

Recently the wise and kind ladies of MN gave me guidance when DS at 5 months felt out of his carseat (not strapped in, wedged into pram to scoot from car to building door - I know, mother of the year) onto concrete headfirst. SadBlush Awful! Went to A&E and aside from a small graze and bump on his head for a day he was fine. I was a total mess, though!! Couldn't stop shaking and slept next to his cot that night.

Two weeks later I put him down in his baby Bjorn chair for 5 seconds TOPS (I swear!!) so I could grab his bottle and he managed to fall forwards on the parquet floor. Blush Blush bruise on his forehead for a week..... BlushBlushBlushBlush

DS is now strapped in 24-7 or put in his cot for safety if I have to do something!!

You did the right thing and went to the GP! Now have a Brew and try not to beat yourself up!!

My friend's mum is a HV, she says it's actually good in a way to have these small accidents as it reminds you to always be vigilant. She herself forgot to strap her son into his buggy once and he fell out and hit himself badly on the pavement.

NonnaMai · 19/04/2013 19:10

Oh poor you. It's very common.

When dd was 6 weeks old we went to a restaurant. She was in her pram and I undid her straps intending to carry her up the stairs. At that point DS asked me something and I turned to speak to him.
Dh and our friend then picked the pram up and started carrying it up the stairs. As they went the pram tipped as one person was lower than the other.
DD fell forward out of the pram and bounced down 10 steps. I was still talking to ds at the bottom of the stairs. I heard dh shout and ran to catch her but missed. It was chaos. DH and his friend were so guilt ridden, they didn't realise I had undone the straps.

DD was fine, she had a small bruise on her forehead but nothing else.

tatletale · 19/04/2013 19:15

She will be fine.

DH was very young when DSS was born, he apparently dropped him a lot more than most, he's now 19 and as smart and normal as can be.
DD1 feel of the sofa and hit her head when she was 6 months old
DSS best friend dropped DD2 on concrete when she was a year old.
Haven't dropped DS yet, but I'm sure it's coming.

I think it happens to most parents, we just don't talk about it Wink

IsThatTrue · 19/04/2013 19:33

My advice to new parents is 'they bounce quite well'

I have: hit dd's head on the car door frame getting her out the car seat more than once

Let dd roll off the bed more than once

Cut the top of her finger off while cutting her nails

Fallen over holding ds1 twice, the first at a few months old and bouncing his head off the pavement

Whacked various children's heads against door frames

And let dd (8) hold DS3 while he was standing up (at 3mo) and she 'put him down' which involved her bashing his head angainst the arm of our very hard sofa!

If you're the worst in the world I have no idea what I would be classed as!

Omnishambolic · 19/04/2013 19:36

Both of mine fell (and bounced, thankfully) off the same changing table. Apparently I don't learn.

One of them fell down the stairs.

My least proudest moment was dropping DD actually in the hospital carpark. I took her straight from Maternity to A&E, who reassured me she was absolutely fine but they weren't so sure about the dripping hysterical mess that I was in by that stage!

InSync · 19/04/2013 19:37

My mum dropped me on the pavement when I was 6 weeks old and I fractured my skull.

I haven't dropped mine, but she's had plenty of falls from the bed, sofa and all the way down the stairs.

mrsXsweet · 19/04/2013 19:39

Dropped ds at 3 weeks old, we had to spend the night in hospital but they don't think he was damaged. Still haven't told our parents as couldn't deal with the fall out!

deleted203 · 19/04/2013 19:41

I've dropped all 5 of mine at some point. Also stepped on crawling babies, fallen over toddlers (kicking them in the head) and accidentally whacked one in the eye with a frying pan when I swung round with it in my hand.

I've carried sleeping children up to bed and managed to crack their head on the door frame as I passed through doorways. I've slammed a car door on someone's finger/hand/head and also dropped the toilet seat lid onto the willy of a small weeing child Blush.

They survive, my dear. Don't worry about it.

scrivette · 19/04/2013 19:42

When I was 3 I dropped my newborn brother on his head.

I haven't dropped DS (yet) but yesterday, whilst trying demonstrate to him how do a roly poly I rolled onto him and squashed him, he had a bit of a bruise on his head afterwards. Shock

facedontfit · 19/04/2013 19:43

Let me guess. This is your first! Smile
