She was our first woman prime-minister - a significant personal achievement, especially for the daughter of a grocer from Grantham, born in 1925 Shock

Also I agree with those that say these ceremonial occasions are something we do really well in Britain.

So AIBU to be watching this morning - in spite of disagreeing with many of her policies ? Will you be watching ?
And what do you make of both her personal achievement and her legacy ?

-cringe- I hope the flowers are glued down

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 12:02

I thought it was especially moving when the final hymn was sung.

On a lighter note- when I first saw Mark Thatcher I wondered why Les Dennis was on the front row Blush

Can I have ice in my whiskey please?

skippedtheripeoldmango · 17/04/2013 12:03

It's a bit off really, isn't it? She was MT's daughter....just as important as her brother...or should be.

EldritchCleavage · 17/04/2013 12:03

Perhaps Carol didn't want to be though. I notice she's worn sunglasses a lot when appearing in public, rather shielding herself. She may be uncomfortable with having to do this in public before the world's media etc.

DontmindifIdo · 17/04/2013 12:03

Nottrending - to be fair, he's 70 now and looks it, it's just that he looked 70 when he was in his 40s... Grin

Now there's a man who's wife will say no to a state funeral! Can you imagine Norma Major wanting anything other than a quiet family funeral at their local parish church and then all back for a bit of a do at hers with friends from the WI making sandwiches and maning a tea urn?

Chockyeggpants · 17/04/2013 12:03

Good. People are applauding.

YoniMaroney · 17/04/2013 12:04

Got some Pedro Ximinez here, past noon now.

Carrying that coffin down all those steps must be really difficult - even worse than going up.
I like some of the coffin bearers too. Prefer the handsome blond one to the one with the moustache - but admit it is rather impressive Smile

Dimbleby has no idea who's who here does he?

ItsYonliMe · 17/04/2013 12:05

Can someone educate me on the purple pillows please? MT's grandchildren were holding them earlier and now the pillows are being taken down the steps.

Sorry, wasn't clear..meant was that the actual whole quote...so, yes then :)

DontmindifIdo · 17/04/2013 12:05

didn't Carol rather have a difficult relationship with her mother? It must be hard to be in the public gaze at a funeral for a parent you didn't have a close relationship with.

What happens now? Do the family go to private burial?

TheChimpParadox · 17/04/2013 12:06

The purple pillows held Maggies medals - i.e Order of the Garter etc

chubbymomie2012 · 17/04/2013 12:06

loving the moustached poll bearer. he will b in my dreams tonight...ding dong!

Jenny70 · 17/04/2013 12:06

Apparently she is being cremated at Mortlake, and her ashes interred with Dennis (not sure where). Not sure when the cremation is taking place, but I think that is family only.

cjel · 17/04/2013 12:06

Think Carols struggling with the being in public thing 'Don't make a fuss' I can imagine her saying.

Bearbehind · 17/04/2013 12:06

So Dimbelby thinks MT had 2 granddaughters and that Mark's wife is actually his sister! Is he watching the same thing we are?

skippedtheripeoldmango · 17/04/2013 12:06

That's a fair reasoning, Eldritch. Maybe so...I get the impression she and her mother didn't have the closest of relationships and perhaps that cuts even deeper for Carol now?

YoniMaroney · 17/04/2013 12:06

Bowlersarm: she is being taken to the Royal Hospital Chelsea and will be cremated next Wednesday

DontmindifIdo · 17/04/2013 12:07

Amicissimma - yep, poor bloke, if he'd dropped it he'd have never lived that down. Mind you, he'd probably be dining out on being the person who dropped the coffin for the rest of his life.
