AIBU to expect next door neighbours to give me my cat back?!?!?!

I am absolutely fuming and doing my nut! This is the first nice day of the year and I've just noticed my 11 year old cat, which went missing 11 months ago, in my next door neighbour's garden. The next door neighbour was sitting outside with her patio doors open and my cat was sitting next to her. Me and my daughters were in shock as we have searched for her and asked around and had even put posters up but had little luck and therefore we assumed that she had died. We kept calling the cat and she instantly recognised us but the woman just sat their ignoring us. We finally got the woman's attention and when we said "excuse me that's our cat" and asked for her back, she blatantly refused as she said she had "taken her to the vet and had her micro chipped". She then brought her husband out, who spoke to us like we were a bunch of idiots. He told us "she was an indoor cat" after we had showed them a load of photographs of her and then they stormed back inside.

It's very obvious that the cat had been shut all this time and the reason we have spotted her now is because it's a very nice day and they have let her roam in the garden.

Where do we stand and AIBU to expect them to return our much loved cat back to us? Thanks for any advice!! Sad

Awww, so glad to hear she's home safely with you. Wonder if it might be worth contacting police again about boy!cat inc that PCSO didn't see him when girlcat was rescued?

LiveItUp · 16/04/2013 20:34

Aaaawwwwww. So pleased Grin

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2013 20:34

What did the bloke next door say as to why they just took your cat though? What utter wankers Angry

DontmindifIdo · 16/04/2013 20:36

yay!!!! (Do make sure you let the neighbours all know about the bonkers cat stealling couple, this is the sort of local gossip I'd love to hear about)

Definately keep an eye out at their windows etc for the boy cat...

skippedtheripeoldmango · 16/04/2013 20:37

EasterHoliday · 16/04/2013 20:43

goodness how do you manage to stay living next to the nutters now?
So pleased you've got your cat - I remember so well finding ours, who'd been missing for 3 weeks (and the person who'd been feeding him in the garden didn't think to mention it to anyone)

Manchesterhistorygirl · 16/04/2013 20:47

Yay! So glad she's back!

nannyl · 16/04/2013 20:50

just read this whole thread

was Shock at first but now Grin

custardismyhamster · 16/04/2013 20:51

Glad kitty is home! There's a beautiful grey tabby cat across the road from me, who visits me regularly-wanders in through open doors (is chased out, I'm allergic!) wraps herself round my legs in the garden, even climbs in my car! She gets a stroke and a 'hello Pebbles' from me and that's it. Next doors cat breaks in (climbs on conservatory roof and through open window Grin) is turfed out too. I stroke her on the doorstep as well. Next door is aware of cat wandering in and knows if cat appears lost to get Nero check my spare room-I like a brief stroke of purring cat every so often but have no interest in STEALING SOMEONE ELSE'S MOGGY Confused

TerrysNo2 · 16/04/2013 21:05

I am very Grin for you and I'm not even an animal person!!

Also, its nice to see a MN thread resolved rather than being left hanging Smile

OneFingerSjupesUpTheYoni · 16/04/2013 21:33

Oh god i've went from Shock to AngryAngryAngry to GrinGrin in 5 minutes reading this!!

My bloods boiling on your behalf, so so glad your cat is back :) someone took in my boy many years ago and i never found out who :( but once every few months he'd manage home then we moved it was heart wrenching :( my alfie was brilliant he loved bendy straws, bobbles, feet and showing his willy off Grin

thegreylady · 16/04/2013 21:38

Wonderful news- a near perfect resolution :) You might have too keep her in for a few days to make sure she doesn't wander and you need the vet to see that the chip is re-registered to your name and address.

YellowDinosaur · 16/04/2013 21:42

I reckon to make sure she doesn't wander you'll need keep her in for 6 Weeks - that's what we were advised when we moved house locally. That if they got out before then they might find their way back.

Hurrah for a happy ending!

echt · 16/04/2013 21:47

I'm so pleased you got your cat back, OP. I would break my heart if someone stole our cat.

Of course the annoying thing is you'll probably never get to the bottom of your neighbours' thinking/motivation in all this, as I can't imagine you'll be chatting any time soon. :o

bootsycollins · 16/04/2013 21:50

That's fantastic news Smile I'm so happy you've got your lovely girl home x

Kiriwawa · 16/04/2013 21:50
