To want to scream at twats posting shite false crap about the bedroom tax

BrittaPie · 08/04/2013 10:01

Eg 'muslims can turn a room into a prayer room and it is exempt'

'Sex offenders are exempt'

Etc etc etc

One just told me to check google, so out of curiousity I did. The ONLY source was ridiculous bnp affiliated blogs. Not even the actual BNP.

Twats.

(Not Muslim, a social housing tenant or a sex offender, btw. Just not a twat.)

I am a net contributor to the tax system and I am concerned about these changes. You reduce peoples' payments because they have a spare room but without providing a realistic option for downsizing. So you spend less money but nothing else changes, the people are still in a house / flat with a spare room and the waiting list for smaller properties gets longer.

For example
Westminster Council - waiting list 2 bed flat 6yrs 8 months
www.westminster.gov.uk/services/housing/housingoptions/hregister/

You would get priority as a downsizer but still, its a heck of a wait.

Will people stop getting so fired up about what the colloquial term for this is. The government themselves are calling it the Bedroom Tax so let's just go with that shall we?

No, the language that is used here is essential. The Left has always abused language for political gain. Their description of anyone opposed to unlimited immigration as a racist, for example. The battle for language is the first battle. Calling this a tax, when it doesn't fit any possible description of a tax, is wrong.

delboysfileofax · 08/04/2013 11:52

Well there's this one family who live in London. Never done a days work in their lives, and live in a house paid for by the taxpayers with way too many rooms. Are we kicking them out and making them downsize? Nah, we're giving them 5 million a year more.

Fuck it, much easier to have a pop at the disabled instead. This country is a joke

Maggysinge · 08/04/2013 11:52

Oh yes the lefts new buzzword 'vulnerable' I come from an area full of these so called 'vulnerable' people and believe me vulnerable is not the word I would use to describe them. Feckless and workshy yes but vulnerable not at all.

Viviennemary · 08/04/2013 11:53

There shouldn't be different rules for people in council houses and those in private rental. The rules are already weighted hugely in favour of council house tenants. Like they aren't on 6 month leases. I think they should stop complaining and realise how lucky they are. I know people who would love a council house.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2013 11:53

'When universal credit comes in, it will include Hb with one payment, does that mean that the private landlords not taking Hb will no longer be a problem? As it's all paid in one sum? '

No, it means they cannot take anyone on Universal Credit, especially because there is no option for the HB part of it to be paid directly to the LL.

Many LLs cannot take those on HB due to restrictions put on them by their lender or insurance.

YouTheCat · 08/04/2013 11:53

Delboy, I know that family - bunch of scroungers the lot of them.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2013 11:54

'Like they aren't on 6 month leases. I think they should stop complaining and realise how lucky they are. I know people who would love a council house.'

Instead of revising the private rental system? Never understood this race to the bottom mentality on here.

YouTheCat · 08/04/2013 11:54

Maggy, unless you know all of these people and their circumstances personally, who the fuck are you to decide whether they are vulnerable or not.

Viviennemary · 08/04/2013 11:55

And just to add I do agree about that family in London. How many houses do they have at their disposal paid for by the taxpayer. Angry

JakeBullet · 08/04/2013 11:55

Adding loads of names to my "heartless wanker" spread sheet this morning!

People like Maggy make me sick actually...too thick to see that many people affected are disabled or cannot work because they have caring responsibilities. Always the way with right wingers eh....blame the poor for their situation....or am I guilty of generalising.

Life is not always easy, it's a lie that if you work hard you'll be fine...it takes ONE thing to shove all that aside. Divorce, redundancy, illness, disability, injury.....any of those things can change life in a heartbeat.

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 08/04/2013 11:56

Expat. If they can't take anyone on universal credit then the councils will be full of people! Can you point me to where you have seen this?

YouTheCat · 08/04/2013 11:56

Exactly, Jake.

LovePickles · 08/04/2013 11:57

Why don't people understand that it's not just the unemployed who are entitled to housing benefit!

There's not enough houses, they sold them off by the hundreds to landlords and through 'Right to Buy'.

It's not the fault of the public that a working family cannot afford to pay full rent. It's ever increasing bills, over the top petrol costs, food bills soaring, and low paying jobs that create these situations. Get an education? If we all had 'an education' who would do your menial jobs? Someone has to do it and those people have to have somewhere to live. It's not their fault life costs more to take part in than their 40 hours of hard labour can pay for. I believe we're focusing on the wrong problem here. There's a shortfall. Available, AFFORDABLE housing for families on low incomes. They are blaming those living in this system for the problem instead of looking at the faults in the system. It's working, lots of people bashing the poor. Ever tried moving due to changing circumstances? Try moving 5 times in 5 years. Private renting makes for a very stressed out family who feels they don't belong. We can never relax, I don't wish that on anyone!

CleopatrasAsp · 08/04/2013 11:58

Has anyone got a link to something that refutes the bloody nonsense about Muslims being able to have a spare 'prayer' room. I am absolutely sick of seeing this shite posted every day.

sarahtigh · 08/04/2013 11:59

I think the bedroom tax would be fair

if a family / individual was offered a smaller property and they turned it down

if they refused to go on a list for house swaps within their local area

they refused to submit details about number of people and ages living in the property or said someone was living there to keep an extra room when in fact they were not

expatinscotland · 08/04/2013 11:59

Tickle, this is a LLs market as fewer and fewer people cannot afford to buy their own home. Plenty of what are known as 'DINCs' on here (dual income, no children). Plenty of people willing to let out a room as part of a houseshare (more profitable for LL). And again, lenders who do not allow their debtors to take on DSS tenants, and insurance companies, too.

MrNiceGuy, maybe if employers paid a living wage and made full time jobs available instead of part time, then less people would need HB in the first place?

If only life were that simple. Most companies eek by and are not all making billions like Tesco/Amazon/Asda etc. Most people are employed by small businesses few of whom can afford to simply up wages.

Plus given the average UK salary is around £26k I'd say most employers DO pay more than a living wage.

We are being offered the option by our HA to move out of our house because my daughter is at university.

I thought that if your daughter is at Uni and regularly comes home then you'd be exempt? See page 3 of below which I found from a quick Google.

head exploding with apoplectic rage at idiots.

BubblePopper · 08/04/2013 12:05

I almost contributed to this thread but then gasped at mrsBucketxxs 'get a job thicko' comment and figured I'd be better spending my time off banging my head against a wall somewhere.
What a delightful person you must be

JakeBullet · 08/04/2013 12:06

Just hidden this thread from my active convos.....too many idiots here.

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 08/04/2013 12:06

But how on earth would private landlords know that someone was on uc?

delboysfileofax · 08/04/2013 12:10

See the thing is this could all be sorted. It really is a piece of Piss to sort out. Quite simply build houses. Hundreds of thousands of them.

This creates loads of jobs and brings down rent which equals more money for people to spend which will lead to further jobs.

Won't happen though as its in the Tories interests to have high rents. More money for them and their mate's.
