Obese friend posted a FB rant, basically saying fuck what everyone else thinks and expects, just be happy with how you look, fuck diets etc. She got over a 100 likes and ?go girl? type comments.

AIBU to think that obesity is nothing likeable particularly, and while I don?t feel anyone should be judged for being obese, I don?t think it?s a cause for celebration either?

Agree it's the denial, aggression & attacking others that's the issue. It is worrying as well when you hear people wrapping themselves in denial of the situation eg claiming clothing sizes have got smaller not larger. Mmm, yes there is a certain irony to that, although those photos are prolly "just" vanity rather than warped?

I did mention Pro-Ana upthread: there has been a fair amount of media attention given to it over the last few years including documentaries like Fearne Cotton's . Worth watching if you want to learn more.

Unfortunately there are some people who've warped the concept of Fat Acceptance to make it about skinny-bashing/denial of dangers of obesity/insisting there's no need to consider lifestyle changes to improve health etc. Much in the same way pro-ana is a very warped take on anorexia - and ironically most of its adherents are not people with anorexia, just people who wish they had it, which is a problem in & of itself, of course.

I worry everso much about the behaviour I model for the young people I interact with, especially ones involved in ballet, given how prized [extreme] thinness is in that world. Umph.
