I believe I am in a minority on this so genuinely want to know if IABU, also warnings that it is trivial, no this isn't the most important thing I have to worry about

In general, would you get something out of the kitchen bin and put it next to something you're about to eat. Is that actually OK and it's my "bins are full of germs" hysteria that is making me feel a bit queasy?

DS picked something off the dog and ate it once.
I pretended it didn't happen.

TheOneWithTheHair · 31/03/2013 11:56

Grin @ Randall.

MIL would have a fit!!

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 11:56

mmmm nice :)
When I was little the dog used to have licks of my ice creams. Yet my mum used to Milton my plastic toys. She does find this funny now.

I used to put his toys in a bucket of Milton once a week. Have you ever heard of anything more pointless?

Clearly they stayed perfectly sterile for precisely 6 days Hmm

Viviennemary · 31/03/2013 12:02

No. If I got something out the bin thrown in by mistake I'd wash it. And I am certainly not fanatical.

ZacharyQuack · 31/03/2013 12:08

Is that you, ?

Mary - we used to scrape chewing gum off the pavement and eat it . We were children of the 70s though, so had stomachs made of cast iron.

TheOneWithTheHair · 31/03/2013 12:25

Eeeww to discarded chewing gum. That definitely crosses my comfort line!!

maddening · 31/03/2013 13:23

I would have taken it out and given it a wipe with anti bac spray or wipes.

I have seen one friend pick up discarded gum and chew it when we were 15 but 20 years later she denies it probably as it is disgusting.

VisualiseAHorse · 31/03/2013 13:26

Depends what it was...a baby's nappy? NO. A receipt that you just dropped in there by accident. Yes.

RainbowsFriend · 31/03/2013 13:31

I have got into the habit of washing my hands every break and lunchtime , and then opening doors with my sleeve over my hand at work (secondary school).

It has SERIOUSLY reduced the number of colds/bugs I come home with.

I probably look like a loon though Grin

AKissIsNotAContract · 31/03/2013 13:40

I don't touch door handles in public loos. If it's a door I can't push with my elbow then I use paper towel to open it.

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 13:47

But what if its a door you have to touch and the only drying option is handdryers? :o

OP posts:
TobyLerone · 31/03/2013 13:48

Sleeve.

AKissIsNotAContract · 31/03/2013 13:52

I shudder at the thought of handdryers. Who wants to warm up bacteria and blow it all around a public toilet?

cece · 01/04/2013 10:23

I went for a day out with friends once. For lunch we had a picnic. Before her DC were allowed to eat they had to have antibac sprayed on their hands... She also wouldn't let them eat any food that touched the picnic table we were sat at. My children were a bit Shock!

sashh · 01/04/2013 10:30

I might have pulled the pen out but I would certainly wash it and my hands not put it back in the bag.

My dd wanted to do another egg hunt yesterday. Gave her to eggs to hide in the house.
was a bit concerned she went into bathroom but tried to chill and let her enjoy herself.
I go around finding all the eggs, went into bathroom. Found 1 on top of the toilet, remained calm and then to horror found one on toilet brush. Uuurrrrgh!
had to explain germs and chuck the toilet eggs away. Washed hands, normal life resumes. Grin
But uuurrgh...toilet eggs, boak.

Don't all parents teach their kids to wash their hands before eating? If soap and water aren't available then anti bac is the next best thing.
