AIBU?

I believe I am in a minority on this so genuinely want to know if IABU, also warnings that it is trivial, no this isn't the most important thing I have to worry about

In general, would you get something out of the kitchen bin and put it next to something you're about to eat. Is that actually OK and it's my "bins are full of germs" hysteria that is making me feel a bit queasy?

TartinaTiara · 31/03/2013 10:27

I would, but it depends what and on the state of your bin. FWIW I have three "bins" - one's an ice-cream carton that sits on the worktop and gets filled up with veg peelings and other stuff to go into the compost, the other two are carrier bags that sit on the floor or hang off a drawer handle respectively and have recycling stuff and "proper" rubbish in. None of them hang around for very long. So, if I'd scraped the peeling knife into the composty stuff, then yes, I'd get it out, because all it would be touching would be the stuff it'd recently peeled. If I put something by mistake in the recycling, I'd dig it out and wouldn't fret overmuch about it. If it went into the "proper" rubbish, I'd have to consider what was in the rubbish and if it was a bit manky. But I don't have small children, or anyone with a compromised immune system (obviously would be more careful if so). I know ex-MIL considers me to be a slattern. I consider it a badge of honour.

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:28

OhDearie, it's been keeping me awake all night you know, you heartless judgemental caahhhh Wink

And if you search for me in a thread talking about MILs, hopefully you'll find me saying how great she is. Because she is. This is not a MIL bashing thread, so please don't come on telling me how your MIL serves you food she's scavenged out of bins for Christmas lunch because that is a different league :o

Thisisaeuphemism · 31/03/2013 10:28

Hmm that was kind - if someone else was there I would have washed it- if alone I would have done what she did! Pretty gross really!

Alligatorpie · 31/03/2013 10:28

I think most people wash their hands after emptying bins or moving the wheelie bin. It's pretty disgusting not to.

I would have probably wiped the marker off with an antibacterial wipe and given it back to dc.

neontetra · 31/03/2013 10:29

I might do it, but I'm a bit scabby and reckless about hygene - don't think yabu, or indeed unusual, to object.

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:29

Hair, that;s the thing. The cake would have probably ended up in the bin anyway as they stuffed themselves at the party yesterday and obviously it's chocolate egg day today but I wanted it waaaaaiiiil-

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:30

Alligator, not IME, and I don't know particularly scabby people I don't think. People are happy to open bin lids when out and about, or put something in their wheelie bin while passing and eating a sandwich.
But then some people do get their bins cleaned, don't they?

OP posts:
RainbowsFriend · 31/03/2013 10:30

Agreed that most people wash their hands after putting the bins out, or touching minging public bins - I don't think that's over the top stuff...

janey68 · 31/03/2013 10:31

Entirely depends what's in the bin. If its snotty tissues then yeuch, if it's peelings and food containers then not too bad

Btw I don't think you're OTT in Washing your hands after emptying bins etc- that's normal isn't it? (please tell me it is or I'll think other people are minging!)

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:32

But if you're out in public and there's a public bin with a lid there isn't usually somewhere to wash your hands!

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:33

Or those bins where you have to sort of push the flappy bit back - most of the time I manage to do this with the rubbish I'm putting in, bt sometimes they're really stiff.
Ahh now I am obsessing. Someone give me a slap with an unwashed bin-hand. I will live probably.

OP posts:
BarredfromhavingStella · 31/03/2013 10:34

Yuk, that's horrible-I have bin issues too.

janey68 · 31/03/2013 10:35

I would hold onto my rubbish if out usually unless there was a handy bin to just drop it in
Though tbh a bin lid is unlikely to have many more germs than your average public door handle

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:37

Yes, you're probably right. But knowing that doesn't make it any easier to touch bin lids strangely. I tend to find they always have stuff splattered on them and it's just grim. But most people IME don't worry about this stuff.

OP posts:
RainbowsFriend · 31/03/2013 10:38

Money is worse surely!

TheOneWithTheHair · 31/03/2013 10:38

Carry an antibac gel. Problem solved.

She's done you a favour Stealth! No cake = no calories!! Grin As long as you don't worry about the eggs.

He hasn't eaten it, and it will probably go in the bin now, partly because of this, partly because day old cake is a bit dry and he has a million choccy eggs too.
Yes, I usually wash my hands after handling money too :o

OP posts:
TobyLerone · 31/03/2013 10:42

I actually hyperventilated a bit at bin lid in the dishwasher.

StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:43

Maryz, I dread to ask, what are the other revolting things? If you say toilet brushes then I am never coming round for dinner, not that I was invited :o
(Oh and I tended to mean wheelie bin lids - I assume you don't mean that)

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 31/03/2013 10:44

I actually got over my fear of domestic bin lids. My aunt and uncle have a touch & lift type thing. Their kitchen is immaculate so I belive they clean the bin lid. So eventually, after many years I can now use it without dashing off to wash my hands.

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 31/03/2013 10:44

How is a bin lid in the dishwasher any worse than, say, a cutting board of chicken juice?

Nothing as queer as folks.

TobyLerone · 31/03/2013 10:45

I don't have a dishwasher.

TheOneWithTheHair · 31/03/2013 10:46

My bin lid is attached to my bin. D'you think I could get the whole thing in?
