She likely already knows ajuba Grin Best to just give up and tell the truth. Good lesson for your daughter, and good lesson for you.

woopsidaisy · 23/03/2013 23:17

It amuses me that people think smokers don't realise it smells. Smokers know it smells!

TiggyD · 23/03/2013 23:34

Just accept that she'll now view you as an addict who's going to die sooner than average and that she'll copy your example and die early too. Or give up now and never smoke again.

olgaga · 23/03/2013 23:46

It amuses me that people think smokers don't realise it smells. Smokers know it smells!

I always knew it had a smell, but I didn't realise quite how acrid, pervasive and long-lasting it was until after I gave up.

Seriously - the smell when someone walks back into a room after going outside for a fag is really strong, and pretty vile.

We had to have a painter and decorator in recently to fix some water damage. He'd go out to his car for a smoke, and when he came back in the smell was stronger than the paint!

flurp · 23/03/2013 23:55

Tell her you the truth - that you smoke and that you will try and give up (if you really mean it!)
You are the adult here and she is the child - if you are a smoker she will have to accept it but she isn't an idiot, she will know if you lie to her and that will hurt her more in the long run than the odd fag.

LadyWidmerpool · 24/03/2013 00:04

I wish my late FIL had given up when my husband was 8 Sad.

HerrenaHarridan · 24/03/2013 18:11

Woooohoooo

Go op!

There are support threads on here. It's really not as hard as it feels like from there. Once your through the first 3 days its just distracting yourself Smile

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 24/03/2013 18:52

Yeah. She can smell it.

I used to kid myself that I didn't reek of it. I couldn't smell much smoke on me and what I could smell didn't smell that bad.

but oh my god. when I finally stopped having any - I can smell a smoker from across a room! It's smells vile to me now.

and unless you are having a shower and washing your hair and brushing your teeth and changing your clothes and gargling with mouthwash after every cig - people can smell it.

you can't. Other smokers often can't, or if they can it's nowhere near as strong and they smell a different smell to non smokers. I don't know why that is, but having been a smoker and now a non smoker, I can hand on heart say the two states result in getting totally different smells off smokers. But if you don't smoke. Oh yes. You can smell ONE fag coming off someone.

Trills · 24/03/2013 19:01

YABU to think that your child will not find out that you smoke, unless you only ever do it when you have time to shower and change your clothes before you see her.

8 year olds are not stupid.

Trills · 24/03/2013 19:02

Good luck.

PeachActiviaMinge · 24/03/2013 19:04

OP you can do it! Flowers Its bloody hard but the first 3 days are the worst once you're over them you're good Grin This is day 6 for me sometimes I still want one but its usually just sheer habit or boredom. DH is cutting back now ready to quit and I make him smoke outside in the horrible snow it helps him cut back too Grin

hopefloats · 24/03/2013 19:11

I bet she knew. Smokers absolutely stink. Smoking out in the garden doesn't change a thing. The stench clings to your skin and clothes, and you ooze the stink of cigarettes from every pore. I have never smoked. Never even tried it. My parents both died of smoking related diseases. It is not a great way to die.

zeno · 24/03/2013 19:32

Good for you op. Stay strong.

My mum was a "secret" smoker many times. It disgusted us as children.

We begged both parents to stop from when we were primary age. Does anyone remember the Nick O'Teen and Superman campaign? We put a massive poster right by their bed.

They have now both died, before reaching 65, of smoking related illness. I love them, I miss them, and I'm mad as hell at them for never giving up, and sad as hell for them and for the grandchildren who now don't get to have them around.

Be honest and your family can support you. Get them to do you a reward chart.

Floggingmolly · 24/03/2013 20:30

I'm amazed you can lie about being a smoker. Hasn't anyone ever noticed the smell? Smokers reek. (And I know, I used to be one).

Christelle2207 · 24/03/2013 20:49

Exactly the same happened to me when I was about 8- except that instead of finding a box I caught her smoking on holiday. I hadn't previously realised and I thought it was the end of the world.
My mum promised me she would give up and didn't. From that point onwards I regularly smelt smoke on her yet she always denied it. Did t do much for my relationship with my mother.
Please take this as a good opportunity to stop for good. In time your daughter will be very proud of you. Do it for her if not for you.

maninawomansworld · 25/03/2013 16:24

You'll never hide something like that for ever, kids aren't stupid!
Tell her the truth, or quit. Up to you!

KellyElly · 25/03/2013 16:26

If you only smoke two a day you'll find giving up easy anyway. Well done OP.

Cookethenook · 25/03/2013 16:32

You poor thing! I really wouldn't worry about it too much though.

I remember finding out that my dad smoked when I was a child. I have not been scarred for life by it. I even quite enjoyed giving him grief for it when I was a teen! He eventually got sick of me banging on about it and he quit (although I'm sure he still has a sneaky one every now and again)

Perhaps it'll encourage you to give up, which is nothing but a good thing.

orangepudding · 25/03/2013 16:43

Well done for deciding to give up!

I saw one of my neighbours aged about 14 hanging out of her window smoking yesterday. Both her parents smoke so it was no suprise.

WowOoo · 25/03/2013 16:56

Good for you. You will have to explain it to her one day if you don't.
If you lie to her, she'll suss. Is it OK if she lies to you?

Otherwise, telling your dd and being truthful might be a great wake up call.

'What are they, mum?'

Well, they are sticks that you light up and burn that are full of nasty chemicals and addictive stuff. They cause cancer, heart disease, wrinkles and they make you smell. Oh, and they are very expensive too.

Sounds so ridiculous when you put it like that.

I used to smoke and I do feel like one now and again tbh, but I am so glad I haven't done so for nearly 7 years.
