to be worried about Universal Credit

idiuntno57 · 23/03/2013 20:21

I am in the lucky position of not needing to claim this but I am so worried about its implementation.

Its coming in in the Autumn and is going to be an online only, monthly, postdated payment. It will be paid to one adult in the family unit.

All well and did if you are god at managing your money, internet literate and in a stable relationship. But in the real world....

How are the most vulnerable in society going to have a chance with this?

Already the council tax changes are coming in and as far as I understand people are confused and shell shocked by it. UC is much bigger and no one is prepared.

Lottieandmia there are two people in my family who get dla and we dont get anywhere near 26000 in benefits.

starsandunicorns · 24/03/2013 15:50

Lol Katie im wondering if its worth starting thread in credit crunch where people can do heads up on bargins

Plus dont forget that reduced bread bread can be forzen and taken out to make toast got four sliced mega thick loaves that was on offer 2 for a pound for 10 pence each

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/03/2013 15:51

I'd like that stars, you should do it. Smile

starsandunicorns · 24/03/2013 15:53

Oh no katie i post but dont start threads too scared [wimp]

lottieandmia · 24/03/2013 15:55

Tbh, crawling I'm not entirely clear on the finer points. Has anyone explained how this Universal Credit will make it easier for people to work?

trustissues75 · 24/03/2013 15:55

Window boxes - you can do tumbling tomatoes and cut and come again salads...and herbs - the most expensive thing you can buy in a supermarket - yet you can grow them on your windowsill for a fraction of the cost - and that includes dried herbs too.

When we were really badly off and living in emergency housing with those awful economy 7 heaters (there's nothing economy about those) we lived in one room - I know that's not for everyone and my housing office raised an eyebrow before I| pointed out that my heating electric bill alone without hot water and cooking would be £21 per week - but it got us by. The 11 pounds I saved in leccy put food on the table...

mrsscoob · 24/03/2013 15:58

Anyone else find it strange that stormybrid would come along to this thread and "accidentally" validate the anti benefit brigades point? Hmm

starsandunicorns · 24/03/2013 15:58

Storage heaters are the worst had a few houses with them only used to put the heater on in the living room used to get ice inside the bedrooms windows awful things

idiuntno57 · 24/03/2013 15:59

kind of glad that people are mostly trying to help on this thread now
However it doesn't change the fact that UC is going to be a disaster IMO

minou - 27, but it's not looking as though there'll be plenty of decently paid jobs around in eight years, so it made more sense to try before declining fertility and increased chance of abnormalities kicked in

Some of us had all our children after 30.

Can I ask you, if UC had been introduced would you have done this?

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/03/2013 16:00

Storage heaters with power meters are the pits of the earth. Designed to make the poor even poorer IMO Hmm

Yes, it's very sad actually. Lots of support for people until her post. Hmm

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/03/2013 16:02

UC will still pay LPs Annabel,so your point is somewhat moot.

AnnabelKarma · 24/03/2013 16:02

Not sure they are confined to the homes of the poor Hmm

AnnabelKarma · 24/03/2013 16:03

So why is stormybird so worried, katie? Hmm

starsandunicorns · 24/03/2013 16:05

Yep katie and beacause you cant put clothes near the dam things to dry it was a bugger to dry school uniform i had one that went fizz bang pop on me in winter LL took 3 days to come and fix it

AnnabelKarma · 24/03/2013 16:06

Sorry, there you go katie,

And then at five months pregnant I heard about Universal Credit, and I've been shitting myself ever since, because the safety net is being pulled away, and I don't know how much I'll be expected to support myself and my daughter on, and I can't plan anything because all I know is that they're sodding Tories so it's a guarantee that UC will involve a cut to my income.

That's from stormybird Still confused as to why anyone would choose to get pregnant knowing all this but I don;t suppose we'll know.

trustissues75 · 24/03/2013 16:07

Not sure they are confined to the homes of the poor hmm

And what has that got to do with anything, Annabel?

If you have them and you can afford them then you have no problem paying for them - or even affording to change them. they are a much cheaper system to install (or were) in houses - so perfect for unscrupulous landlords who charge extortionate amounts to local councils for people who have fallen on hard times and lost their home...

but again...what has whether or not these kinds of heaters are or are not only found in "the poors'" homes got to do with anything? If you're living on the poverty line they are an issue...

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/03/2013 16:07

Because we have no concrete figures yet about what UC will consist of Annabel.

wannabeEostregoddess · 24/03/2013 16:14

Not sure they are confined to the homes of the poor.

See my point above about how working people should be more concerned with getting wages raised and changing things which affect them too, instead of blaming the claimants.

Joe Bloggs on JSA isnt benefitting from your high electric bills or extortionate rent. Hes just scraping by.

StormyBrid · 24/03/2013 16:14

Took the words right out of my mouth, Katie. And it starts in, what, a week?

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/03/2013 16:14

YY
We had storage heaters. Not for long though since they were shit. We changed them for a fabulous cheap combi boiler and radiators. Cheaper to run and whole house toasty. We have a large 4 bed house.
However the difference is we have the money to replace our heating system and don't need permission since we own our house.
Not so easy in a private let while in benefits, or in fact any house while you are on benefits. Unless you have a spare £1800 kicking about, that is....
(laughs hysterically)

PearlyWhites · 24/03/2013 16:16

Stars am sure people like anabel would even begrudge you the fleece

starsandunicorns · 24/03/2013 16:20

I know pearly arnt they luckey to look down on us.rolls eyes im still waiting like katie is with pen and paper to be told by Annabel where all these jobs are if Annabel has even bothered to my post up thread

AnnabelKarma · 24/03/2013 16:24

Who's looking down Hmm?

I don't know anyone who doesn't support the vulnerable and the needy but I haven't actually seen anyone come out in favour of people choosing to get pregnant on benefits. Anyone? Hmm? Anyone agree that that's perfectly fine and dandy?
