to ask the sales assistant to wash her hands

I don't think i was tbh
It was Boots. I bought a yoghurt, wrapped sandwich (thank god!)

As I went to the counter the sales assistant was sniffing then wiped her nose with the back of her hand then picked up my items saying do you want a bag....

I actually said... I would like to put those back please and change them..and really you should have washed your hands before touching them because you've just wiped your nose with the back of your hand.

She went a bit red and washed her hands with some anti bac on the counter so I wondered if someone had mentioned something earlier

But I felt very awkward like I was being difficult..but really I'm not am I?

OP, OP, where are you?

Flobbadobs · 23/03/2013 18:30

marje it depends on the management I suppose, some can be arses about things like that, the ones I worked for at Woolies were.

FarleyD · 23/03/2013 18:33

Come on, there's a lot more to be worried about out there than a bit of snot. The sandwiches were wrapped - unless shop assistant has some sort of bionic snot that can permeate plastic casing, ywbu. If you're that particular about hygiene, you shouldn't be buying ready made food anyway, you have no idea who has done what to it.

And you were rude to the shop assistant - are you the lady who told my dd last week to take her hands of her shoes because she (dd) has psoriasis on her hands?

Your post made me chuckle. I have thought this in the past but would never be brave enough to say it! I am a nurse so the whole hand washing/germs thing is never to far from my mind!
You were right to not want another persons germs all over your purchase if it could be avoided. I know others are saying that you pick up germs everywhere which is true but I still wouldn't want her cold added to that mix.
She wont do it again in a hurry anyway!

SoWhatIfImWorkingClass · 23/03/2013 19:49

Your food was in its packaging.

I wouldn't have humiliated someone like that.

YABU

careergirl · 23/03/2013 19:59

I've been keeping away because of the personal insults. But no I wouldn't tell a youngster or anyone else in a shop off because she had a skin condition. Thats not her fault. Dirty filthy habits can be helped. I didn't "attack" this person I just brought her up on her poor hygiene. Thats all.

OP posts:
CombineBananaFister · 23/03/2013 20:25

I don't think it was professional and it's not really nice because in your head its sort of indicative of their hygiene in general so YANBU on that bit.
BUT she may just have had an itchy nose or had to come to work with a cold and not allowed a tissue on the shopfloor and desperately didn't want a dewdrop bless! (we are not allowed them, apparently you could hide money Hmm )
Its a bit grim but think you were a bit harsh considering food was wrapped, you probably gave her more germs with the money.
Would not have accepted this in a food handling place though (unwrapped)

idiot55 · 23/03/2013 21:19

Is this a made up thread???

BettySuarez · 23/03/2013 21:30

So OP you are sensitive to being insulted but have no qualms about humiliating another person in public?

The germs are not really the issue here. Humiliating another human being is really really awful though.

I imagine it will take her a long time to get over it.

Enjoy your sandwich

OhDearieDearieMe · 23/03/2013 21:31

Is this a made up thread???

One might also wonder quietly to oneself whether the Pope is Argentinian Grin

Kiriwawa · 23/03/2013 22:44

This thread is nonsense because you have no idea what the sales asst was doing before you got to the till. She might have had her fingers up her bum. Or knuckle deep in a vat of toxic waste.

But because she didn't have a tissue (and I've been there on the tube and it's embarrassing enough having a runny noses and nothing to wipe it with) you decided to humiliate her.

Bully for you. Your food was wrapped. You could probably have sunk it in a vat of guano and it would have been edible.

QueenFee · 23/03/2013 22:54

I think yabu but my dh thinks yanbu.

Make of that what you wish

toffeelolly · 23/03/2013 23:05

you were being rude, next time you go out you should wear mask over your face Wink

pedrohedges · 23/03/2013 23:08

I'm a sales assistant and i am fed up of customers coming into my shop and sneezing all over me and the products i sell.
If you had spoken to me like that i would of refused to serve you.

pedrohedges · 23/03/2013 23:11

Then probably wiped my crack on your ham salad!

careergirl · 23/03/2013 23:47

And on that note ....the thread has now been reported for offensive content.

Sorry keep cutting myself off! I noted that one poster used the C word and that is why I have reported the thread.

How controlling.
This is a public forum, you've reported the entire thread because you don't like some of the responses you're getting?

Oh very dear.

Wow. That is revolting. There's been loads of support for the shop assistant on this thread, but if this is the other perspective on this... words fail me.

BettySuarez · 24/03/2013 08:38

OP has this thread make you rethink what you did?

Weener · 24/03/2013 08:44

What flavour sandwich was it?

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 24/03/2013 09:13
