To think fine hair can look perfectly lovely

Women on MN often bemoan their fine hair. Dd has fine hair and I think it's rather gorgeous. Instead of wasting money on volumising products that don't work, take a look at celebs who make their fine hair look gorgeous unlike celebs like Cheryl Cole, Victoria Beckham and that Kardashian woman with their awful extensions.

I have fuckloads of hair - believe me, you do NOT want this much "volume" - it's stupid and takes FOREVER to dry.

i have fine hair and it drives me crazy. it's fine and curly, which just makes it frizzy and a nightmare when it's not straightened or coated in product, which just makes it greasy.

Snoopingforsoup · 20/03/2013 11:18

Err, Cole etc. spend hours in hair and make up, padding out the fine hair with hidden pieces.
Look at her Chewbacca American look! That's not her own fine hair looking better, that's lots of work. Never compare your own hair to a sleb ever unless you want to feel like crap!
Fine hair is lovely, mine is thick and bloody annoying. Not for me the dead straight bob I would love. What's wrong with fine hair?

Snoopingforsoup · 20/03/2013 11:20

Read your post wrong!
But I stand by the fact your average sleb spends hours having hair teased and tousled even if they look effortless!

Pandemoniaa · 20/03/2013 12:07

I speak as someone who endured demi-waves as a teen. Anyone remember them?

Oh yes. (Shudders!)

I've got fine hair but lots of it and tbh, it causes me very little trouble. It's fairly long and very straight and you can do lots with it. Although I draw the line at perming since that simply makes it go crinkly and fine rather than bouncy and curly.

I read somewhere that if you want to make your hair look longer go blonde, as it "stretches" the hair to eye. If you want it to look thicker go darker. Which I have done, because my hair is thin and crappy. Add the problem of a weird hairline (absurdly high at the temples) you what is commonly termed a "hair-mare". Part of me worries about it getting even thinner due to pregnancy when the time comes.

Having said that, all those 'slebs with "thick" hair are fucking themselves over in the long term by overusing extensions. Think Jennifer Anniston (reformed user), Naomi Campbell, Katie Price, wtc.

I have fine hair and less of it than I would like. I have been using Schwarzkopf Moisture Kick leave in conditioner for a year as it was recommended by my hairdresser to help my hair recover from some zealous over blonding by my last hairdresser. It has had the added effect of making my hair seem thicker some how. Even my hairdresser was commenting on it. She used that salt spray stuff last time she styled it and I was actually quite impressed.

My hair is now the thickest it's been - i changed epilepsy medications & initially it went very fine indeed in 2011 ie. lots fell out especially at the front.

I had to wear wigs (itchy but looked good) or scarves / wide bandannas for a few months. That's how bad it looked!

Now i've changed medications again & my hair has grown back curlier & far thicker than ever (was always fine haired).

Unfortunately it's regrown quite silvery too. I find red or brunette colours make it look thicker & healthier.

My tips include: look at any medications you may be on as some do thin the hair; take prescribed Ferrous Sulphate 200mg tablets if you are anaemic or don't eat much meat; eat sardines & almonds; see a good hairdresser; reduce stresses in your life.

I have lots of very fine hair that's also naturally wavy and prone to frizz, it also has a mind of its own and likes a bad hair day more than a good hair day. fine hair when your young is easy, as you get older is sucks. I've tried everything with it and I mean everything, for now I've settled on using argan oil and my hair seems the happiest its been a while, but it won't last long, it never does. All I need to do is poke my little finger outside on a bar hair day and I'm a bundle of fine frizz.

I tend to ignore the celeb circus, they have a team of stylists and dieticians and fashion gurus and personal trainers and whatever else they want at their disposal, its their job to look good because they're paid to look good and the careers are built on them looking good IMHO.

I have fine hair but it's curly. I have only just started to like it in the last couple of years, since growing it and discovering the curly girl method. Would still prefer thick hair though, but then my 2 close friends have thick head hair, but also thick body hair, so swings and roundabouts really.

Loulybelle · 20/03/2013 16:00

My hair looks nice til i go out in the rain, then it just looks like a frizzy mess.

PrincessRagnhild · 20/03/2013 16:06

Haven't read the whole thread, but just wanted to say I agree OP - I think it gets harder work as you get older, but fine, flyaway hair can look really gorgeous. It's usually very shiny and smooth too, much prettier than birds' nest extensions or huge matted mane hair. I actually get jealous of children when they have that lovely fine hair that curls at the ends and looks best when slightly messy.

TiddlyOmPomPom · 20/03/2013 16:17

My hair is v fine and always looked crap until last year! Some kind of post baby effect? Anyway - I now have lovely natural waves, and have bizarrely good hair days on a regular basis. :)

My mum's hair is fine and v thin, so I can see my destiny and am enjoying it while I've got it. She hates her hair and uses special shampoos etc.

I'm quite looking forward to it going properly grey - fine silver hair looks great.

PrincessRagnhild · 20/03/2013 16:18

My best ever fine hair tip is to wash it less often and sleep with it, or half of it, in a ponytail on top of your head, so you wake up to root lift and waves. You look like an idiot in bed though.
