To be utterly pissed off about people of short stature being used in Peter Kay's thing

Yes yes they didn't have to do it. But they probably needed the money. As the mother of a boy with dwarfism it just makes me so cross.

I'm sure Whats that given a little thought and perhaps a little maturity, they could find other targets. Let me think, oh, politicians for example.
And yes, you were rude, the op pointed out her situation and you basically told her to fuck off, put up and shut up.

Like another poster said, I kind of got the leprechauns when they set off from Belfast but was a bit Hmm when they didn't switch to a variety of different people pulling the sofa. It made no sense other than, as you say OP, just to laugh at the "little people" pulling the fat lazy man.

RiffyWammal · 16/03/2013 13:45

MrsDeVere has summed up my feelings on this perfectly.

Can I just add, I was dismayed to see in Peter Kay's video another comedy trope that is cropping up more and more - a group of people on mobility scooters. I use a scooter because of my MS. My disability is hard enough without becoming an automatic figure of fun to schoolkids everywhere because of some comedian's lazy shorthand route to getting a laugh.

Yes, because that's exactly the same thing isn't it, HillBilly76? Hmm

brainonastick · 16/03/2013 14:28

We (me and dh) commented on this last night as well. It was offensive to dwarves and not at all funny. (and the rest of his sketch was shite as well)

By the way, I think Tyrion in Game of Thrones is an awesome actor (didn't he win an Emmy or something for it?) - a perfect example of someone doing such a good job that the physical aspect is secondary, not the main reason he is in the job.

countrykitten · 16/03/2013 14:36

I didn't see it but read this thread as I have a close friend who has dwarfism. He also calls himself a dwarf and is very upfront about things as he is very confident and this often disarms and confuses those people who want to pity him and patronise him. Bit Confused that someone would call this kind of thing on tv 'disablism' as my friend is perfectly able bodied and would find that kind of comment astonishingly patronising. Go tie yourself in knots over that one.

Verycold · 16/03/2013 15:24

I know there are plenty of sharp-witted savvy dwarves out there who certainly don't need my protection. But there are also plenty vulnerable struggling ones who can easily become victims of stupid jokes and much worse, and it is for them that I don't want to see dwarves as a group as a target of cheap laughs.

His sketch was awful I was more shocked at his wife in a bhurka tbh what the fuck was that all about, the little people are part of his thing they always work for him they were in phoinex nights, the little people dont have to do it they are adults they can chose what they do, yabu and a little [patronising

WhatsTheBuzz · 16/03/2013 15:33

what do you suggest op does about it dawndonna?

Verycold · 16/03/2013 15:35

Honestly people feel free to call me oversensitive but I really object to being called patronizing. I come from a background of genuine concern because my SON is a DWARF, so please do give me a break.

OP posts:
WhatsTheBuzz · 16/03/2013 15:36

I really do sincerely apologise if I've offended you op. My comments were based on that reaction to a stupid comedy sketch.

mrsjay · 16/03/2013 15:37

these people belong to warwick davis agency maybe take it up with him, perhaps the dwarves have other work and only do it part time,

shockers · 16/03/2013 15:42

I didn't think the sketch was particularly funny, but then I was disappointed by much of the comedy on offer.

My only thought on watching it was that the young girl was very pretty, I would have thought that whether she was tall or small.

In light of earlier comments though, what would people have thought if the smaller people had been used for the Leprechaun parts and then ditched in favour of taller actors? Or should they not be offered parts in any comedy shows because of their height?

DancesWithWoolEnPointe · 16/03/2013 15:42

IMO 1 dwarf and other people of regular height pulling Peter Kay around would have been a dwarf being treated as a regular person. But as they were all dwarves, it cannot be passed off as anything but a dwarf joke, and I really hoped society had moved on.

idiot55 · 16/03/2013 15:47

well I have two thoughts

  1. obviously the people in the sketch wanted to do it and they are individuals the OP seems to be forgetting that everyone regardless of height is an individual and is allowed to make their own decisions on what they do, it has nothing to do with her.

  2. some of the celebraties taking part were publicity seeking.

Verycold · 16/03/2013 15:56

Sure. They probably had offers of playing the romantic lead in a major bbc series or the murder suspect in a Itv crime production, but they just happened to choose the Peter Kay sketch.

OP posts:
DancesWithWoolEnPointe · 16/03/2013 16:05

I do think that Peter Dinklidge is breaking down some of the barriers in this area. Although being a dwarf is pivotal to the role of Tyrion in GOT, some of the roles he has had were not written specifically for a dwarf and given to him because he is a good actor. Maybe the romantic lead and murder suspect roles are just around the corner...

mrsjay · 16/03/2013 16:06

they are actors they all are and TBH i didnt see what you saw I saw a unfunny send up if the whole comic relief challenge I found the past it celebs just as bad as you found the dwarves

poxyfoxy · 16/03/2013 16:43

Surely the joke was that it was they were the most inappropriate people to be pulling a fat bloke around on a sofa. shouldn't the outcry be about people laughing at a fat bloke, isn't that just as wrong? Finding someone's physical appearance comical? The sketch was crap, but it would have been less funny if they`d used 6ft blokes as that would have been the obvious choice.... am I making any sense?

DancesWithWoolEnPointe · 16/03/2013 16:47

You are making sense poxy and I agree - the whole sketch was in poor taste.

mrsjay · 16/03/2013 16:49

I agree too the whole thing not just the dwarves was supposed to be in poor taste , fwiw I do not believe anybody was exploited in the making of it, it was just crap
