to never EVER bank with this bank again?

I have just logged into my online banking to find that my current account has been deleted. Without any notice. No letters. Nothing.
The more I think about it the more problems this arises.

My bank (I won't name names because I don't think I'm allowed? But I'll give you a clue - they've been buggering up a lot recently) has screwed me over again and again by not paying me my wages, taking out my direct debits too soon etc etc.

AIBU to NEVER bank with these damn people again?

(yes, this is just a rant!)

(and can anyone recommend a decent bank? Or is it better to go with a building society?)

First Direct are just wonderful - you can always ring and speak to a really helpful person if you want to... I've been with them for 17 years and never had a problem.

I'm a complaints handler for NW! They will not close your account without notifying you - please ring the customer service line 0845 444777, you may have got locked out or there could be suspected fraud on your account.

Bank with the Co-Op. Ethical and they treat you with respect.

PoppyWearer · 15/03/2013 21:03

Co-Op all the way!

Smile bank (from the coop) has non-PVC bank cards. Very ethical! (PVC never ever degrades.
Plus the website is a nice pink colour Grin

DH is with RBS and they left him with no way of accessing his money for 7 months - neither his debit card nor credit card were replaced when they expired, and he couldn't transfer any money to our joint account as he has a card reader that requires his debit card to do so. They kept telling him he had to collect his cards from his branch, he kept pointing out that he was in France, then they agreed to send them, then they said he had to collect them. He finally managed to speak to someone senior, having been given the runaround, and they sorted it out within days and gave hom £150 for his "inconvenience."

First Direct are fine - so long as you don't want to move house whilst pregnant. (This applies to First Direct mortgages).

First Direct will not recognise the salary of a woman on maternity leave for the purposes of a mortgage "in case they don't go back". They don't worry about the man in the relationship not going back/changing his career/his mind/whatever and they refuse to believe the pregnant woman when you tell the truth about your plans to return to work. Computer just says no.

saintlyjimjams · 15/03/2013 21:23

Shock (our mortgage is not with them!)

stormforce10 · 15/03/2013 21:58

herethereandeverywhere this happened to me with a lettings agency when I was pregnant with DD. They refused us a rental agreement for exactly the same reasons you outline above.

OP I'm with Barclays and in 19 years I've had one problem with them which turned otu to be them being sort of helpful. My online banking got hacked and they froze all my accounts leaving me with no money over Christmas but they did stop my entire life time savings being transferred to an account in Pakistan! Once I got hold of the right people they were great at putting it right

I moved at 41 weeks with first direct -no issues whatsoever

zirca · 16/03/2013 07:45

Co-op bank is brilliant. Very helpful, very security conscious. Been with them for 12 years now.

zirca · 16/03/2013 07:50

Oh, and while we're talking horrendous bank stories, a cousin of mine was told by Santander that because she didn't have a passport, they couldn't move her address when she moved - despite new rental agreement, bills etc. Her driving licence was old style so while she posted that off to be changed to photo id, they sent her new credit card out to her old address, and the new people living there merrily spent £15k on it in a week!!!!!!!!!! You can only imagine the hassle of trying to sort that out!

GinAndSlimlinePlease · 16/03/2013 07:59

With first direct a real person answers the phone. The first time that happened it freaked me right out Grin

I also bank with cooperative, but still can't change my address or name because they need my passport and I travel all the time Angry

my dh banks with virgin. They changed his account number without telling him! so now he can't bank online, pay money in etc.
