to never EVER bank with this bank again?

TheSeventhHorcrux · 15/03/2013 16:50

I have just logged into my online banking to find that my current account has been deleted. Without any notice. No letters. Nothing.
The more I think about it the more problems this arises.

My bank (I won't name names because I don't think I'm allowed? But I'll give you a clue - they've been buggering up a lot recently) has screwed me over again and again by not paying me my wages, taking out my direct debits too soon etc etc.

AIBU to NEVER bank with these damn people again?

(yes, this is just a rant!)

(and can anyone recommend a decent bank? Or is it better to go with a building society?)

First Direct have been superb for us.

takeaway2 · 15/03/2013 18:51

You got to be kidding me if you're thinking of Santander. If people had not guessed you were talking about NW, then I'd have guessed you were with Santander... Don't even think about them.....

3littlefrogs · 15/03/2013 18:52

I have been with First Direct ever since they have existed. They are brilliant and I would never consider banking with anyone else.

Enfyshedd · 15/03/2013 18:55

I have to deal with Santander through work - awful, awful company to have to do business with.

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 15/03/2013 18:59

Another fan of first direct. Lovely staff, ever so helpful. The only time I had a problem it was resolved quickly, with an apology and I got feedback on what training they'd given to the member of staff so it would not happen again. I didn't even complain, it was picked up by another member of staff who was helping me with something else.

sneezingwakesthebaby · 15/03/2013 19:09

Argh I'd love NW to delete my account with the massive overdraft that I have no hope of paying back anytime soon

thegreylady · 15/03/2013 19:12

I have been with HSBC since they were the Midland and I was 21 so 47 years and no major problems at all.

I knew it would be NW or someone else in the RBS group. Hate them with a passion, and that's as an ex employee. I transferred to nationwide after the RBS fiasco that left us with no money for weeks. They are great.

saintlyjimjams · 15/03/2013 19:33

we've been with First Direct for 17 years, never had any problems. (Have other bank accounts as well but FD have been the best)

HipHopHooray · 15/03/2013 19:35

They have done the same with DD1s savings account. With her 15 years of pocket money saving in (£200ish). I hate them and have moved ALL of our accounts to First Direct.

angelinterceptor · 15/03/2013 19:38

I moved to first direct several years ago. They are fabulous. Also it's dead easy to switch banks.

Charlie01234 · 15/03/2013 19:40

Don't want to stick up for banks (was made redundant from one) but they are not at fault for direct debits going out early. The companies claim the money from your account with a ddr and when you sign the mandate you are telling the bank this is ok. Same with wages, your work pays that in so the bank can't help that. Still no excuse if they just closed your account without warning though. Bank ombudsman??

Charlie01234 · 15/03/2013 19:41

Also first direct give100 pound to switch

maddening · 15/03/2013 19:43

Are you sure they just haven't barred the account from Internet access?

ilovepowerhoop · 15/03/2013 19:43

have you rung them to find out whats going on? At least give them a chance to sort it out first

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 15/03/2013 19:44

I'm with Barclays and they're great.

The same thing happened to me with Abbey a couple of years ago.

WinkyWinkola · 15/03/2013 19:46

Cooperative Bank is great. Supposed to be ethical too and not funded by taxpayers!

idococktailshedoesbeer · 15/03/2013 19:59

I'm with HSBC. Had two complaints over the years, the first time they rectified their mistake and the second they gave me £50 to apologise. Both times I threatened to move elsewhere. Santander seem to have by far the worst reputation.

babyfirefly1980 · 15/03/2013 20:07

I would never use Santander...we had a joint account when it was Abbey National and for a while as Santander, they are awful. We closed the account and I am with HSBC now.

Wolfcub · 15/03/2013 20:11

I'd recommend nationwide and I'd avoid halifax like the plague

gordyslovesheep · 15/03/2013 20:13

have you PHONED THEM?

my account 'disappeared' online when it was suspended due to suspected fraud - PITA but it wasn't gone for ever

gordyslovesheep · 15/03/2013 20:14

NB I have been with Natwest for 22 years without major problems

juneybean · 15/03/2013 20:14

Muh is natwest really so bad I've just transfered most of my accounts to them

Tigerbomb · 15/03/2013 20:33

Im with Natwest - I love them - never had a problem in the 20 odd years Ive been with them

I also have an account with Santander - been with them 2 years and again so far, touch wood, no problems at all
