To think that presents should be wrapped in wrapping paper...

... not just flung into one of those cardboard gift bags so that this recipient has to pick things out like a shopper at a jumble sale?

Gift bags are great. You can keep them and reuse them. Harder to do that with wrapping paper!

Kiwiinkits · 15/03/2013 08:06

Gift bags are fine, YABU

Plastic supermarket bags, which is what my DH uses to 'wrap' gifts, are a different story altogether Smile

Babybeesmama · 15/03/2013 08:07

Yanbu - DH grandma gave our Dc's Xmas presents wrapped in carrier bags?? Wtf? They are kids!

DigestivesWithCheese · 15/03/2013 08:08

Maybe I am in an unreasonable mood! Smile Of course there's the environmental aspect to think of as well.

When I give presents, I wrap them in paper or tissue before they go in the bag, especially when there are a few small things (unless it's something that's gift wrapped in the shop). I just think it takes the fun out when you look in the bag and see what's in it straight away, instead of slowly unwrapping it.. Sad

Babybees - I have also received 'carrier bag' presents in the past! I suppose it sounds ungrateful but surely the whole point of giving a gift is to put a bit of thought & effort into it.

I don't think ever said "first world problem" on a thread before. Is that like a first Biscuit?

MisselthwaiteManor · 15/03/2013 08:19

I love wrapping presents but I do like a nice gift bag! I get what you're saying though... it takes away the suspense.

DigestivesWithCheese · 15/03/2013 08:25

Mardy - I think of this as a very serious problem.

Wrapping plus gift bag is where it's at Grin

TWinklyLittleStar · 15/03/2013 09:20

YABU.

Anyway if you tape the bag shut with poor quality sticky tape, you get to open it AND re-use it.

HerrenaHarridan · 15/03/2013 09:21

My ex had a pathological aversion to wrapping presents, one occasion he cut a piece of my beautiful blue velvet and wrapped 3 books and couple of other bits up in it with string. ( this was 0930 on Xmas morning that the wrapping happened!)

Because cutting a random hunk from a swathe of fabric is much less wasteful than using some wrapping paper ( that I carefully hoard and use for card making and scrapbooking)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/03/2013 09:23

I love gift bags because you can re-use them. I always put adult presents in them, often with some tissue paper on the top to preserve the surprise.

Kids I mostly wrap with paper.

The only exception to this is Christmas, when I always wrap everything in paper.

CruCru · 15/03/2013 09:23

If you have a really awkward shaped present, those gift bags are great.

DinglebertWangledack · 15/03/2013 09:25

Ingrate..

TinyDiamond · 15/03/2013 09:26

Totally unreasonable, ungrateful and wasteful. Many wrapping papers can't be effectively recycled either if they have those metal sheens on them or a plastic coating.
I couldn't care less

Yabu. My mil never wraps gifts, but she lovs her gc as much as the next granny.

Who gives a shit about wrapping paper really?

maddening · 15/03/2013 09:30

You are most posh in your wrapping :)

I do pop things in a gift bag - and recycle ones I am given.

But if someone made the extra effort with pretty tissue paper etc then it would not be lost on me.

Arithmeticulous · 15/03/2013 09:48

Gift bag = OK
Plastic bag = not OK

DigestivesWithCheese · 15/03/2013 09:51

Ingrate! I agree - and had never heard the word before. I am trying to pull myself together and get over it Grin.

I do ACT as if I am grateful though, does that count? I will carry on with my wrapping though. I especially like wrapping in layers of tissue, with little shiny stars between the layers, so that they fall out as the person opens them Blush

DigestivesWithCheese · 15/03/2013 09:53

Herrera - the blue velvet is still preferable to the carrier bag wrapping, in a way. Was your ex very pleased with himself?!

djelibeybi · 15/03/2013 09:58

Those little stars are a pain, they end up all over the floor.

Getting down to pick them up isn't so bad, it's getting back up again that's the problem.
