Should I be annoyed that SIL didn't offer to pay or replace?

It was my DD's birthday(7) yesterday and we bought her a doll carriage, one which she had wanted for ages.

My SIL came around with DN's (8 & 3). We were sat having coffee and the girls were playing together, whilst the 3 yo was playing happily by herself. DN then saw the carriage and started playing with it - decided to sit on it and snapped the wheel off.

All my SIL said was oh dear .... Hmm

It was obviously DD got that for her birthday and now she's lost out on a present she really wanted.

Aibu to expect SIL to at least offer to either pay or replace?

If I can't be fixed then ask for s replacement

Magimedi · 14/03/2013 19:37

YANBU - SIL should be rushing round the shops NOW finding a replacement.

rubyslippers · 14/03/2013 19:37

If that was my child I would offer to replace it

TidyDancer · 14/03/2013 19:37

YANBU.

Sianilaa · 14/03/2013 19:38

Yes I would, YANBU!

I'd send her a quick text with the details and price of it with a breezy "here you go, this is for the replacement buggy, thanks" or something. It's not on not to replace something you or your young child broke. If my older child broke it, I'd replace it and my child would pay for it out of their pocket money. You treat other people and their things with respect.

flossy101 · 14/03/2013 19:38

Yanbu.

She really should have insisted on replacing!

kinkyfuckery · 14/03/2013 19:38

Wow, yes she should definitely stump up to either repair (properly) or replace.

narmada · 14/03/2013 19:38

No! YADNBU. I can't believe she isoffered no recompense. Is there a massive disparity in wealth between you?

VisualiseAHorse · 14/03/2013 19:40

YANBU - I would be mortified if my child broke someone else's birthday present!

Facebook/text her with details of where to buy a new one.

INeverSaidThat · 14/03/2013 19:41

She should have offered. I would have. Can it be repaired?

KeyToYourHeart · 14/03/2013 19:41

Sorry I should have mentioned that it can't be fixed. Sad

Yanbu

QueenOfCats · 14/03/2013 19:46

YANBU.
If my child did that I would have been mortified and offered to replace it immediately.

sue52 · 14/03/2013 19:48

Unless your SIL is hard up I would expect her to offer to pay for a replacement. "Oh dear" is not really good enough.

blondieminx · 14/03/2013 19:52

YANBU, at all.

Send a text saying "we've had a look at the doll's carriage DN broke earlier and unfortunately it can't be fixed :( here's the link from where we got it from, poor DD is upset and i've explained that you'll be replacing it very very soon! X"

HeadfirstForHalos · 14/03/2013 19:56

Yes, text what Blondie said ^

Yanbu!

thezebrawearspurple · 14/03/2013 20:10

yadnbu, she should replace it.

digerd · 14/03/2013 20:10

I can't believe she was so couldn't care less. A profuse apology and reprimand of her son for breaking it, is the least to be expected from her.
If she is your DH/DP sister or the OH of his brother, I'm surprised he didn't say something.

What would she have said if one of your DC broke her DC birthday present?

ihearsounds · 14/03/2013 20:12

That isn't an 'oh dear' That is don't be a tight git and replace a toy that your child broke. This is what normal, civilized people do.

TheChaoGoesMu · 14/03/2013 20:18

She needs to stump up for it. Send her a text with the cost and where to buy it from.

Bejeena · 14/03/2013 20:19

Can't you tell your brother and make sure he realises that his child broke it and it needed breaking.

Also maybe not the point but if toy is new then couldn't you take it to the shop and see if they could at least replace the wheel?

purpleloosestrife · 14/03/2013 20:46

YADNBU

& what blondieminx said - which is pure genius BTW!

zwischenzug · 14/03/2013 20:49

Alternatively you could go to your SILs house and break toys there to the same value. An eye for an eye... I forget how the rest goes.

midastouch · 14/03/2013 20:49

YANBU not even a sorry?
I agree, text what blondieminx said!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 14/03/2013 20:53

Or you could take it back to the shop and get a replacement - goods not fit for purpose.

Surely a child playing within normal realms it shouldnt have broken so easily?

Or text what blondie said
