Should I be annoyed that SIL didn't offer to pay or replace?

It was my DD's birthday(7) yesterday and we bought her a doll carriage, one which she had wanted for ages.

My SIL came around with DN's (8 & 3). We were sat having coffee and the girls were playing together, whilst the 3 yo was playing happily by herself. DN then saw the carriage and started playing with it - decided to sit on it and snapped the wheel off.

All my SIL said was oh dear .... Hmm

It was obviously DD got that for her birthday and now she's lost out on a present she really wanted.

Aibu to expect SIL to at least offer to either pay or replace?

Did she know that it was the birthday present?

If so, rather than any old toy, I think she needs to replace. She cam have the broken one for her dd.

is it worth the potential family fall out by making an issue of this?

(if you are intending to that is...)

I am Shock that she didn't immediately offer to pay for a new one. You need to tell her the price asap and not let this turn into a big issue. Your dd must be very upset. I still remember when my sister broke my operation game on my birthday when I was about that age, I was very miffed (didn't get a replacement though!!)

"wreck the relationship"?! Hmm

The OP brought her daughter a birthday present, the SIL's kid broke it and the decent thing to do is to replace it. The SIL may have said "oh dear" thinking it was fixable.

The text I drafted is breezy and lets her know actually it's broken and gives no get out.

I suspect there is a back story to all this...
