To roll my eyes everytime a parent sends a Pope well wishing message

and lol a bit everytime I get one.

We are in a Catholic state school, and as you all know that you are meant to attend church and be all religious just to get into the school.

A few of the parents are sending messages about the new Pope, do they really care that much or just showing colleagues how religious they are?

This sounds more to do with your perception of politics in your particular school than with religion, OP. Yes, I imagine that some parents with children in faith schools aren't true believers in that particular faith. I'm not convinced that saying hello on the school run is the best indicator of that, however.

PinkBottleGreenBottle · 14/03/2013 14:46

Perhaps the parents sending messages to the Pope just aren't as cynical as you.

LittleTurtle · 14/03/2013 14:47

Can they send them diretly to the pope instead of the whole school then?

I imagine they're trying to celebrate with like-minded people.

WilsonFrickett · 14/03/2013 14:51

Is the pope on their facebook Shock Now that really would be worth posting about...

ilovesooty · 14/03/2013 14:52

I would imagine so. I'm not religious myself. However, I can't believe there are no secular schools available to the OP. She obviously doesn't buy into the ethos of the one she chose.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/03/2013 14:52

What a mad post. I'm highly excited about the new pope but sometimes I don't feel like being chatty in the mornings. Does that mean I'm not acting religiously? I'd better take dd out of the school then.

ShatnersBassoon · 14/03/2013 14:55

I'm not religious either, but I can understand why this is exciting news to lots of people. I reckon it feels far more exciting than the school run.

LittleTurtle · 14/03/2013 14:56

Great that most of you have such nice religious people, but it would help if they were all round friendly - instaed of just when there is a new pope.

Once again not a particurarly unfriendly post.

What is a pope well wishing message? Is it like saying Happy Christmas to people? Or do you send it somewhere or sumfink Confused

Annunziata · 14/03/2013 15:15

I am a Catholic and I'm not sure what a pope well wishing message is Confused

Mitchy1nge · 14/03/2013 15:24

I thought it was like random people on FB saying mazeltov pope Francis or congratulations or whatever. I am very excited anyway (not that it takes much)!

Nancy66 · 14/03/2013 15:28

I'm catholic and I couldn't give a fuck.

He sounds like just as nasty and backward-thinking as the rest of them and he's probaby already started work on covering up the latest child abuse scandal...

flockofstarlings · 14/03/2013 15:49

I don't understand. Are they sending the Pope messages or sending messages to the school, or what??

Nancy66, your post is not very nice.

PureQuintessence · 14/03/2013 15:52

Are you personally congratulated on the new pope? Confused

MaryBS · 14/03/2013 16:00

I just wanted to say....

congratulations on the new Pope :o

TiggyD · 14/03/2013 16:23

Happy Pope day to you...

YABU if you think Christians are expected to follow the example set by Jesus Christ in the Bible. If they did that they would have to stop spending billions of pounds on churches and gold ornaments and give it to the poor.

LittleTurtle · 14/03/2013 16:26

lol Tiggy.

Great to hear some refreshingly honest thoughts from you Nancy.

The messages are sent to everyone at the school.

Wilson the Pope does have a twitter account but it seems to belong to the office not the man - Benedict had to give it up when he left.

I am intrigued by the thought of people acting religious on the school run - does it involve turning the other cheek when someone double parks and blocks you in?

The new Pope has asked any Argentinians who were planning to travel to the Vatican to celebrate to donate the money to the poor instead. It would be great if his attitude to the wealth of the Vatican continued in that vein.

StuntGirl · 14/03/2013 18:29

Friendly and religious arent the same thing.

Can you quote one of the messages please. Still not clear on content.

montage · 14/03/2013 19:28

Actually the best way to be religious on a school run would be to have someone drive you slowly past the school while you stand on your seat, upper body protruding from the sunroof, doing a papal wave.

That should also cover the requirement to celebrate the start of a new papacy.

thebody · 14/03/2013 19:28

Nancy66 I think your post is absolutely fair as the Catholic Church continues to lie and abdicate responsibility for horrendous crimes against women and children dating back decades.

Op my children too attended a church school as it is our local catchment school. C of E. some parents were vile and rude and some nice and friendly. None of the attitudes correlated with either going or not going to church.

stripeyjimjams · 14/03/2013 19:30

Your post made me chuckle, OP. I'm a Catholic and have witnessed the competitive Catholicism thing in action. Me and DSis went to school in a rather naice area of East Renfrewshire, and there was definitely a lot of elbowing to be 'top Catholic' in the school's associated chapel. Of course most Catholics are interested in the new pope, but there can be a social element of making your pillar-of-the-community status as visible as possible! It was harmless, of course, but my DM got so fed up of it that she stopped taking us to that chapel and we went back to the one we used to go to in a rather less naice area, with a lovely chain-smoking, cheery priest who enjoys a good swear and a bevvy, and married me and DH last year.
