To be a bit worried about my big toe?

Wereonourway · 13/03/2013 23:08

It bloody hurts! Posted here for traffic

I've not knocked it or anything and it suddenly starting hurting on Sunday. It's only very slightly swollen but I can't bear weight on it and it throbs and movement is difficult.

Now I'm lying in bed and my whole foot is throbbing and sore.

The toe is without a nail following a door slamming incident by my brother when I was ten, the pain is more behind my toe if that makes sense.

Im gonna have to get it checked aren't I? I hate going to the doctors, especially when it looks like a normal toe!

Yes you are going to have to go to the Doctors.

There are Doctors on here, and people with good advice, and people who are Drs by osmosis, and some people who'll get you doing all manner of horrific things with the contents of your cupboards.

YABU to worry about your toe when you haven't been to the Drs. YABU to ask if you should be worried because now you will receive many diagnoses which will probably make you worry more.

YANBU though too, because it's not unreasonable to be unreasonable when you're in pain.

Gout?

Fakebook · 13/03/2013 23:15

Sounds like gout to me.

Mabelface · 13/03/2013 23:17

You might have an infection, so need to see a gp

Cailinsalach · 13/03/2013 23:22

I am not a real doctor but I have watched Casualty for years. This makes me virtually qualified medically. ( My legal qualification comes from Judge Judy.......I digress)
You definitely have a phantom ingrowing toenail. I prescribe strong tea and a limp.
You still need to see your GP and I am sure he will confirm my diagnosis.
You're welcome!

somewheresomehow · 14/03/2013 18:52

I should book in at the docs
It sounds the same as my big toe, although mine is red as well
i am now on antibiotics four a day for five days.

Pigsmummy · 14/03/2013 19:10

Well between the Calpol syringe and my new ear thermometer I feel like I should be on Holby and my diagnosis is go see your pharmacist and if they draw a blank your GP, could be in-growing toenail/gout/anything. Have you been drinking red wine/port?

Wereonourway · 14/03/2013 20:31

I'm now sitting with ice pack on my increasingly painful toe.

No doc appointments available until Tuesday so would mean trip to ooh gp.

I've worked out that its more the ball of my big toe, that's the most painful bit.
Ow ow ow

Sudden onset of pain in a big toe joint is typical of gout. Your Dr will most likely give you anti-inflammatories for a first attack.
They might do a blood test and possibly Allopurinol.
Don't believe all the "Oooh if you've got gout you must be a raving lush/alcoholic".
It's common in people who take diuertics or have raised Uric Acid levels.

They need to rule out:
pseudo- gout
fracture
infection
Rheumatoid Arthritus

(not a Dr but I'm an NHS Podiatrist so I'm a bit qualified with feet) Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/03/2013 20:34

Out of Hours GP for you if it's as painful as it sounds Wereonourway.

(You know it makes sense)

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 14/03/2013 20:36

Doctor trip I reckon. Might be gout?

DameSaggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/03/2013 20:36

I second the poss gout diagnosis, especially if it's worse at night. Last time I had it I couldn't bear the bedclothes on it. Had my foot stuck out of the bed even though it was about -8. Bloody agony.

Can anyone diagnose me? I have a pain in my foot arch. It hurts more if i haven't been walking, ie sitting down or sleeping. Not that i'm hijacking the thread or anything.

CityTiliDie · 14/03/2013 20:54

Pain toe..... is it red and apinful to touch? if so likely to be gout otherwise could be almost anything and should be seen be GP

Pain in arch, likely to be tendon/muscle strain, rest elevation ice and massage are the best cures, could be plantar fasciitis though!

coatonarack · 14/03/2013 21:05

Oooh, what's plantar fascitis for the lay person? Is it contagious?

coatonarack · 14/03/2013 21:07

Well, I've looked it up on wikipedia and quite frankly i'm disappointed. It says it is "a very common condition." i am not common. I am middle class.

coatonarack · 14/03/2013 21:10

And then it goes on to say i am fat.
In my best Margot Leadbeatter voice, " well, thank you VERY MUCH."

Wereonourway · 14/03/2013 21:18

My troublesome toe is not sore to touch, as in the skin is fine iykwim??

Although because it has no toenail it does resemble a jacket potato, so I can't compare it to other toe

It's more movement and bearing weight which is painful, can stand bed clothes touching but the weight of the duvet hurts if that makes sense.

I hope it's not bloody gout, I've lost 12lbs in recent weeks, am eating better than I ever have. I've only drank port twice in my life and don't drink red wine.

Google images(and how could they be wrong!!!!) suggests I'd be able to see gout?? barf

I hate feet

OP posts:
coatonarack · 14/03/2013 21:19

Seriously, it does sound like gout as that affects the toes. Is it a burning pain or a dull ache pain?

jchocchip · 14/03/2013 21:20

Ow foot pain is the worst. My dh has a stock of gout pills made from flowers I think. Can I join in? I've got pain in the ball of my left foot sort of at the base of my second and third toes. Worse when running and when wearing not cushionned shoes...

coatonarack · 14/03/2013 21:23

jch that 's carriesexandthecityitis from wearing high heels too often. Give it a good rub and then wear sensible trainers.

jchocchip · 14/03/2013 21:27

Glad its got a name Grin have been wearing trainers to work but they are not quite the thing Hmm

Wereonourway · 14/03/2013 21:27

It's more of an ache, no burning. But the ache sometimes goes into my inner lower calf (?)

This may be due to me hobbling around awkwardly though.
I feel like such a dick going to see someone when it looks entirely normal- my toe nail was taken off when I was ten so it can't be that.

As a total change of topic I have recently had a period, having not had one since implant was put in two yrs ago- it can't be related can it.

I'm 30 this year, going grey at an alarming rate, have a busted coccyx after labour and sciatica to boot. I feel about 65.

I'm going to bed with a hot water bottle to feel sorry for myself

RipleyIsMyHero · 14/03/2013 21:31

I've got a really itchy painful spot near the entrance of my left nostril.
