to punch my aunt in the gob?

There is history but...

First she talked about golliw*gs loudly.

Then she started on about how Savilles victims were 'precocious 15 year olds who knew what they were doing'.

I didn't punch her but at that point I left.

I hope we don't share may genes.

Still18atheart · 13/03/2013 22:02

I can see why people would find that offensive, especially if spoken loudly at a funeral.

However, it was only labout 10 years ago that gollywog coupons were found on marmalade jars and you sent off for the badges.

I do find the Saville comment way more offensive though

Eveho · 13/03/2013 22:02

Apologies Emma I misjudged your post. My bad (as you youngsters would say Grin )

But as I say, I really don't think age has a bearing on it. Her aunt has questionable views and she may (not) be an older lady. Two separate things: one doesn't cause the other (least I hope not!!)

akaemmafrost · 13/03/2013 22:04

eveho we are probably MUCH closer in age than you think Wink.

Eveho · 13/03/2013 22:06

Calm down Phoenix

I used the word abhorrent. Someone else (not unreasonably imho) said bigot.

Sorry if you think finding racism abhorrent is inciteful, I will have to disagree with you there. I am however prepared to be persuaded on the golliwog as toy issue. Unfortunately the term has been somewhat hijacked so I would rather steer clear,

Eveho · 13/03/2013 22:08

Again, my mistake Emma (I'm doing well tonight Blush ) I just assumed that mention of your mother meant you were possibly a lot younger than me (don't know why, mine's still alive and kicking!)

ClippedPhoenix · 13/03/2013 22:09

I also agree that the saville thing is a bit off due to the amount of offences and the amount of sheer covering up because of his facade and fear.

I will say however it goes on and will still go on probably for ever and a day. We need to equip our young to deal with it.

ClippedPhoenix · 13/03/2013 22:14

Im calm Eveho.

I knew that would be your next sentence.

No one can ever talk rationally these days about anything when the racist word is used. It's inhibiting and used far too liberally. It's used to shut people up so nothing is ever resolved so just bang away with these unjust words.

Eveho · 13/03/2013 22:21

Amazing clairvoyance there Phoenix I'm impressed.

As I have said, I am prepared to be persuaded on the golliwog issue, but that aside I will continue to call racism wherever I see it or suspect it. If that offends people's sensibilities that's just too bad.

ClippedPhoenix · 13/03/2013 22:26

But there wasn't any? No need to call huh.

No need to be impressed, it was just a typical, no clairvoyance needed.

ClippedPhoenix · 13/03/2013 22:28

In my personal opion you just look like a bit of a "bashing" fool.

You were trying to "incite"

Eveho · 13/03/2013 22:29

No need to be impressed, it was just a typical, no clairvoyance needed.

A typical what? What other threads are you judging me on Phoenix?

ClippedPhoenix · 13/03/2013 22:30

Opinion of course.

ClippedPhoenix · 13/03/2013 22:32

???

I don't know what you're on about?

Eveho · 13/03/2013 22:34

I enjoy enjoy differences of opinion as much as the next person (I wouldn't be here if I didn't) but I take strong exception to being told I am trying to incite.

Anyway I feel guilty for assisting in leading this thread off topic so I shall withdraw.

squeakytoy · 13/03/2013 22:37

I grew up in the era of collecting gollys from Robertsons jam. I also had black schoolmates who collected them too, so it never even occurred to me (or them) that gollys were a racist item.

Eveho · 13/03/2013 22:38

Okay I will just answer your last, when you say you don't know what I am on about

You said I was being typical and I just wondered how you had come to the conclusion that I had been speaking typically (or predictably I guess) and I was asking what other posts of mine you had read that led you to this conclusion. Something can't be typical in a vaccuum, it has to be typical OF something so I was just asking: of what?

No need to reply.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 13/03/2013 22:41

i grew up with the Robinsons golli's and nope, never ever made a connection to racism.

Her comments re Saville's victims were however, vile so for that alone YWNBU to give her a dry slap.......

bumperella · 13/03/2013 22:46

As an adult I can see why golly's are offensive.
As a child I loved my toy golly (even though they were always the "baddies" in the Noddy stories) -I never thought of them as representing anyone in particular. It was a different time (incidentally, I'm in my 30's bit grew up somewhere rural with old-fashioned parents). Anyhow, I wouldn't bring the topic up now... although if aunt was saying "deceased always carefully kept those marmalade tokens for us" them maybe fair enough.
Jimmy Saville comment? Cannot think of any defence for that.

OP you did well not to make a scene, and rightly so at a funeral. Very well, actually.

MrsKoala · 13/03/2013 22:48

i presumed when i read the OP, that she meant the aunt was talking about golliwogs meaning black people (like my nan did) rather than the aunt was talking about the toys. Have i missed where op says it was about the toys?

WorraLiberty · 13/03/2013 22:50

OP why didn't you tell us what she actually said when she 'talked about golliwogs loudly?'

Was she fondly remembering a childhood toy or was she insulting black people by calling them golliwogs?

The difference is absolutely massive.

Probably best if you explain a bit more

OliviaMumsnet · 13/03/2013 22:51

Evening all

bumperella · 13/03/2013 22:51

Nope, Mrs K I think you're right: I jsut see "golliwog" and think of the toy/noddy stories/Enid Blighton.

akaemmafrost · 13/03/2013 22:53

I can see that the golliwog issue is not clear cut but I think the Jimmy Saville comments can't ever acceptable.

25catsnameSam · 13/03/2013 22:57

What your aunt said wasn't great, but is it acceptable to "punch my aunt in the gob"?
Sound like you deserve each other .

Tortington · 13/03/2013 22:59

you should kick her in the cunt
