Is ridiculous.
Saw a coat in a nearly new store. Couldn't believe the price or aibu.

If its as good as new and a decent coat then it's a fair price. If its the tyoe of second hand coat that has been washed and not come out well a few times, got worn cuffs and padding that's gone a bit flat, then it's ridiculous.

Bridgetbidet · 13/03/2013 21:08

I think it's ridiculous the cost of clothes in second hand shops now. It would barely cost that new.

They used to be a real resource for people with a lack of funds but now they're just overpriced and sell tat.

My Mum voluteered in a Mind shop and they filter out all the decent stuff to be sold on to 'vintage' shops etc and just put the tat out like Matalan tops and Primark jeans.

Normally in the charity shops around me they are selling a lot of stuff from places like Matalan, Primark etc for more than the original shops charge new!

KittyLane1 · 13/03/2013 21:10

I got a brand new baby gap coat for £2 tags still on, British heart foundation x

Murphy0510 · 13/03/2013 21:14

I agree it's ridiculous.

I got my 3 year old DS a coat brand new in the sainsburys sale a few months ago for £4. There's no way I'd pay £7 for a secondhand supermarket coat.

Fakebook · 13/03/2013 21:17

I bought my Dd a down padded snow coat from next clearance 3 years ago for £7. I'd never pay £6 for a secondhand coat.

MrsKeithRichards · 13/03/2013 21:21

Yanbu and a lot of charity shops take the piss with their prices now. However they are there to make money, the charity they provide is in the money they raise from selling clothes, not in providing people with cheap clothes, sadly.

Smartiepants79 · 13/03/2013 21:25

You could probably buy a new coat in Tesco for a couple more quid.

ratspeaker · 13/03/2013 21:45

It would depend on the coat, condition and original price in tesco

IncrediblePhatTheInnkeepersCat · 13/03/2013 21:53

YANBU

I frequent a lot of nearly new sales in my area. I bought two good quality, like new, coats for £2.50 each. Most baby coats in these sales are between £1.50-£4.00 depending on condition and where they're from. Occasionally there is a coat for £7, but they tend to be mini Boden!

EchoBitch · 13/03/2013 22:56

Bloody charity shops.

I gave some of my Mum's stuff to one this morning.

An old condiment set of six glass containers with silver plate tops in a silver plate holder type thing.

DD was in town later in the day and looked in and saw it in the window priced at £49 fucking squid.

There is no way it's worth that.

I am quite cross that they've put such a high price on it,i've given them a ton of stuff lately,it's for charity, not to rip people off.

This was the cancer research shop.

EchoBitch · 13/03/2013 23:02

And years ago i gave DD's party dresses to an children's charity shop, can't remember which one,and was irritated to see they were asking £10 quid each.

I don't think i'd even paid that for them.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 13/03/2013 23:11

I know they are there to raise a profit for charity but I think a lot of the people pricing the stock are a little out of touch with the reality of cut price retail these days.

A charity shop makes 100% gross profit from every donation, so in the main it is in their interest to price the stock correctly and liquidate as much of it as possible to create a cash fund for that particular cause.

They'd actually be better off keeping the "Vintage" or designer clothing which would make them a greater margin, rather than passing onto a private business who will only pay a slight markup as they want to also enjoy a slice of profit on the items bought.

Monty27 · 13/03/2013 23:19

Charity Shops and Primark clothes pricing, don't start me. I'd rather have new thank you.

I'm fairly hard up and in high street shops trawl the sale rails, it never ceases to amaze me how charity shops pricing is.

In saying that, I've had some dam good bargains in them too. You just have to be fussy and savvy.

rockinhippy · 13/03/2013 23:30

YANBU - I was looking for a particular colour of scarf recently, so after no luck tried our local charity shops - found the colour, but by the label it was a Primark scarf - for soddin £6.99 too Hmm

Gingerodgers · 14/03/2013 05:00

This really annoys me too.where I live in nz, one of the churches does a free clothes swap day. Bring stuff, or not, take what you want, no money changes hands. I give a lot of outgrown stuff from the kids, and you know that genuinely hard up people can get what they need. The benefits system here is nothing like as generous as the uk, so lots of people really struggle.

honeytea · 14/03/2013 06:24

There is a great kids clothes second hand shop near us, the shop is staffed by people with learning difficulties so everything is a pound to make it easy for them to add up the total. You get some fab cheap clothes :)

6.99 for a used coat is silly. I also don't know why they put clothing up for sale that is obviously stained or ripped.

buttercrumble · 14/03/2013 06:33

I agree with you , the charity shops round here are pretty expensive and iv'e thrown better stuff out and given better stuff away to friends.....

bedmonster · 14/03/2013 06:57

Well given that I recently ebayed 4 baby boden and mini boden coats in immaculate condition that went for no more than 3 quid each, is say its over the odds.
I'm going back to giving their stuff away to friends.

Murphy0510 · 14/03/2013 09:10

Bed monster I'm shocked at how low your coats went for! Normally secondhand Boden coats, especially the gorgeous duffle ones, go for £20+. Such a shame, I hate it when things I'm selling go for a ludicrously small amount

mrsjay · 14/03/2013 09:13

you could probably get a new coat for that in the tesco sale that is ridiculous Hmm

wonderingsoul · 14/03/2013 09:17

ynbu

i wouldnt pay that for a supermarket coat second hand.

and to the op that said chairty shops are there to make money for their chairty.

who do you think majorlty shop there and why? because they cant afford to buy new all the time. charging them the same prise and sometimes more then it oringally cost does not help any one.

the charty shops round here are disgusting, the ones near my sister in dorset are pretty good.

mrsjay · 14/03/2013 09:21

what wonderingsoul said charity shops are supposed to be priced to meet a need and not everybody can afford to 'support the charity' they buy in charity shops for loads of different reasons, I have a huge issue with our oxfam( it is a book shop) I wont go in it it is too expensive, I can buy new books cheaper

HorribleMother · 14/03/2013 09:30

Well... recent thread on here with folk claiming that £30 was about the usual price for a brand-new nursery-age child's coat, so £7 second hand would be fine, no?

Not that I would likely pay it, either, but obviously many would.

MortifiedAdams · 14/03/2013 09:33

Horrified - £30 on a coat for a three year old? Thats maddness.

Murphy0510 · 14/03/2013 09:34

I think that many that can afford a £30 brand new coat, or think its a standard price for one, would not need to buy a secondhand coat for their child, therefore would think £7 sounds a fair price.
