This is a bit of a post about a post. Some one said that a girl in a barbour jacket would be chavvy. I have never, ever seen a Chav in a barbour jacket.

A chav down here is someone who wears a tracksuit most of the time and jeans with a polo shirt when going out on the town. The girls would wear tracksuit tucked into ugg style boots, the boys trainers.

Whats a chav where you are?

You cannot try to define chav on MN. There is a risk it might implode. People get very upset about it.

But let's face it, although we might not be able to define chavvy, we all know it when we see it.

GirlOutNumbered · 12/03/2013 22:08

Chav is last year!? Damn, I'm never on the trend.

Why is it a bad word? I thought it defined a way of dressing....

See it really does need discussion.

You're defining it by dress rather than standards.

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 12/03/2013 22:10

Uh oh

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/03/2013 22:10

People define it by dress and name more then anything else.

fififrog · 12/03/2013 22:13

They interviewed some Essex folk on breakfast tv a few years back (where the word originates) about whether it was derogatory. One bloke said "not if someone I know says it, but it is when someone I don't know who thinks they're better than me says it"

Grin
HollyBerryBush · 12/03/2013 22:15

Orinated in Essex? Originally it meant CHeltenham AVerage

GirlOutNumbered · 12/03/2013 22:15

The kids at school use it all the time, I don't think they see it as derogatory, more as a lifestyle choice!???

I have a Barbour , it is warm and I am not sure why it would matter if someone from a council estate also wears one.

Talkinpeace · 12/03/2013 22:16

Chav 4X4 = 4 kids 4 dads
not sure where Barbours fit into that.
Round here they are definitely farmer clothes

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 12/03/2013 22:16

According to popular current theory I'm one

GirlOutNumbered · 12/03/2013 22:17

So Arisbottle, you are saying a Chav comes from a council estate?

What about Janner? ANyone use that term!?

It's Charva in the NE which comes from gypsy language I think.

Arisbottle · 12/03/2013 22:20

Chav seems to be a term used obsessively by MN for someone who is deemed to be less worthy than the middle class norm on here .

I think it includes people not from council estates , but MNers do prefer a chav to know their place and remain on the estate . I suspect I would be classed a chav.

germyrabbit · 12/03/2013 22:22

in my view it's just another teenager subculture like emos. it is down to designer and branded fashion (hence the barbour).

HorryIsUpduffed · 12/03/2013 22:22

I thought it meant vulgar and ostentatious. Cheryl Cole, frinstance. She certainly doesn't live in a council house.

DancesWithWoolEnPointe · 12/03/2013 22:23

It is considered a highly offensive term around here. If the kids use it a school they get a day in seclusion, it is considered hate speech.

sweetkitty · 12/03/2013 22:24

In Scotland it's a ned.

Commonly defined by tracks unit or jammie wearing, tattoos on neck, bull terrier or huskie dog, dyed red or blonde hair, loads of rings and fake uggs.
