to feel hurt that my friend avoids lifts as she hates my car?

My friend can be quite snobby at times ... we have been friends since childhood and it's just one of her little quirks.

Such as when I bought my first house I asked her if she would like to stay over and she said yes only if it was clean.

Anyway we meet up once/twice a month and have always taken it in turns to be the one who drives. She has been given a new company car (a few months ago now) and it's a nice car - much nice than mine anyway.

I have noticed that since she got it she has always turned down my offer of driving when it's my turn.

Such as I'll say - pick you up at 8 and she'll text back saying no don't worry I'll drive.

Or if I insist that it's only fair if I drive this time, she'll say I've got really bad car sickness and I only feel ok if I'm driving.

I've known her 20years+ and she has never complained about having car sickness before.

Her car is nice and mine is a very boring practical estate car but I just feel a bit hurt and embarrassed that it's not good enough for her.

Maybe you arent a very good driver?

WorraLiberty · 12/03/2013 18:56

She sounds like a bit of a twat to be honest

But then again you know what she's like and you choose to remain friends...so there's nothing you can really do, is there?

LoveUntilYouBleed · 12/03/2013 18:58

Maybe you arent a very good driver?

Well I've never been in an accident or have so much as a scratch on my car.

We have always shared lifts too.

She once drove into the back of another car when I was a passenger so she would be a hypocrite if that was her reason.

It sounds like you are guessing about her not liking your car. Has she said she doesn't like your car? Could she be trying to avoid drinking for a reason that she doesn't want to tell you about?

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 12/03/2013 19:00

She's a prat.

I assume that she has some really great qualities that make it worth putting up with this sort of shit?

ReluctantBeing · 12/03/2013 19:00

You don't know the actual reason though.

CurlySuePreciousPeach · 12/03/2013 19:01

Maybe she just likes showing off her new car?

CloudsAndTrees · 12/03/2013 19:02

Maybe she likes driving her car. Maybe she worries that you're skint and thinks its easier to get her company to pay for her petrol? Maybe she just wasn't to get as many free journeys out of her boss as possible?

CloudsAndTrees · 12/03/2013 19:02

Wants, not wasn't.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 12/03/2013 19:02

Is it one of those cars like in the advert a few years ago where the husband and wife fought over who could drive for the night? If so, maybe she just can't help herself?

Hissy · 12/03/2013 19:02

Maybe she just loves driving her new car. I would prefer to drive myself anyway, and if I were still in love with my wheels, I'd look for any excuse to drive myself.

Don't take it personally.

unless it's kept like a skip on wheels, in which case, clean the minger

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/03/2013 19:04

Are you sure you're understanding her motives here? Confused

If she really is turning down lifts for this reason she is a total twit and not worth your time. And what she said about your house is pretty off, unless you are incredibly messy and your car and house are too mucky for her to want to be in them.

I suppose the other thing is that she may be intending it as a kindness if she drives?

Tryharder · 12/03/2013 19:04

She sounds a bit er...eccentric?

I wouldn't worry at all about this. You save on fuel, get to be chauffeured around and can have a drink! What on earth are you complaining about, woman?

mum11970 · 12/03/2013 19:05

It may be because her new car is still a bit of a novelty to her and she just likes driving it around.

NomDeOrdinateur · 12/03/2013 19:07

Actually, you can suddenly become more prone to car sickness - I get it very badly in most cars now whereas I never used to, and the only difference is that I spend a lot more time traveling in a much smaller car (compared to the tall, rumbly diesel van we had previously). Maybe spending lots of time in her new, higher/lower, vibration-insulated, quieter car with different suspension has made her more prone to car sickness when traveling in other vehicles?

redskyatnight · 12/03/2013 19:07

My car sickness (which used to be hardly noticeable) has got worse as I've got older.
And some driving styles (e.g. very fast accelerating and decelerating, pumping the clutch) make it even worse. There is actually one friend I won't have lifts with any more as combination of her driving and her car (to do with size, smell, placement of engine ...) makes me throw up every time.

So it's not necessarily an excuse.

GregBishopsBottomBitch · 12/03/2013 19:10

My friend, insulted both my car and another friends car, when we both first past our test. The friend who said it, doesnt drive nor have a car, so snobbery.

Jins · 12/03/2013 19:11

Why are you worried?

It's her fuel and you can drink if you want Grin

WileyRoadRunner · 12/03/2013 19:13

Maybe she's pregnant and it's an excuse not to drink?

Maybe she just loves her car?

Maybe she wants to drive so leaving time dictated by her?

Has she ever been in your car or is this a recent development?

ENormaSnob · 12/03/2013 19:13

What car have you got?

KC225 · 12/03/2013 19:14

Are you Fred Flintstone and is your friend Barney Rubble? Even as a child I thought that putting your feet through the bottom of your car and running has got to hurt

kasbah72 · 12/03/2013 19:16

Is she pregnant but not ready to tell people yet?

LoveUntilYouBleed · 12/03/2013 19:41

Haha yes very true, I should just shut up and enjoy the free ride Grin

She's definitely not pregnant though. Most of the things we do rarely involve drinking anyway.

GreenShadow · 12/03/2013 19:48

I used to know someone who couldn't be a passenger in another friends car because the driving was just too jerky and it made her feel sick. Was fine with everyone else.
Also some cars do have a smell about them which if you do get car sick, can set it off.

iwantanafternoonnap · 12/03/2013 19:48

Blimey I would love it someone always wanted to drive and couldn't care less why. Enjoy being chauffeured Grin
