To not buy preteen dd proper skincare products...?

And just make up some cheap natural face cleanser from porridge oats instead? Dd's changing and her skin needs a bit more than just water on a face cloth....to be honest I don't know where to start with skincare products for her, all the stuff seem too harsh or aimed at adults, and I didn't want to go down the road of buying a whole load of products which might not be suitable and I dread to think of all the chemicals...but maybe I'll have to if her skin worsens as she develops...but just not yet..fingers cross, hoping she has her dad's skin and ot mine....

I suppose an Aibu and wwyd.

I second Lush angels on bare skin, v gentle

Feminine · 13/03/2013 13:39

I'll second Neil's Yard too.

Most high street stuff is loaded with parabens that mess with hormones.

I'd be concerned about that with regard to a developing teen.

Jojoba oil is fantastic.

caramelgirl · 13/03/2013 13:55

I really rate Weleda rather than Hauschka. Cheaper, nicely packaged anf easier to use- eg hauschka's cleanser is a hassle and goes off v quickly.
I order from Germany now that I know what I like- Hauschka and Weleda both way cheaper over there (site I use is www.bella-Donna.de I think).
Worth getting her into using a regular mask too- I use Hauschka clay mask which is a big hassle but effective.
Toner: I use organic apple cider vinegar (which is "live") mixed half and half with cooled white tea. It is surprisingly gentle on sensitive sbd spotty skin but does smell so prob nO good for a teen.
Good luck and I think that you are being a lovely mum thinking about her so sensitively.

I have very fond memories of my first skincare. I didn't need it until I was about 12 (quite late to develop, me) but it was so nice to have it. I felt very special and grown up and I loved doing the whole daily cleanse tone moisturise and once a week face mask. I used to have cucumber stuff from Boots. My friend had Aprii.

I woudl start her on something like Simple. If she uses it regularly and needs something more, only then would I spend more on products like Ren or Neal's yard.

I feel so sad though when I see adults with long standing acne scars when there might even have been the slightest chance of them avoiding them by having a good skincare regime when they were younger.

pixiegumboot · 13/03/2013 15:49

lush 'angels on bare skin's should do it. gentle or you can make it slightly exfoliating. no parabens. won't take off eye makeup but bodyshop waterproof remover will. alternatively lush 'ultrabland' will do everything but has parabens.

Katiepoes · 13/03/2013 15:56

Another vote for Weleda here - Big Green Smile often have it on offer.

I remember Aprii - I had the square pads, it's a miracle I had any skin left by the time I'd finished scrubbing, wish my Mum had been more into such things (she's a soap and water followed by whatever-is-on-offer kind of woman).

valiumredhead · 13/03/2013 15:56

Iirc the Aloe range from TBS is paraben free and it's very gentle.

valiumredhead · 13/03/2013 15:57

Completely disagree about Simple - I find it so harsh, its like using varnish remover on my skin!

BadgersRetreat · 13/03/2013 15:59

i second Simple too - i used it when i was a 'gel'

it's just come to Canada and i'm pleased, and have started using it again

Nutregena 'Moisture' moisturiser is v good too - non-comenegenic so does not clog pores. My doc recommended it when i started getting hormonal acne at 35 yrs old Sad

BadgersRetreat · 13/03/2013 15:59

oh what a x-post!

I avoid Lush because they support extreme causes. Fucking crazy the lengths people go to sell soap these days.

valiumredhead · 13/03/2013 17:12

I avoid Lush because their shops stink and their shampoo makes my scalp itch Grin

KateShrub · 13/03/2013 17:14

That too.

But their hypocritical posturing makes me vomit.

I've just bought DD some face wash and day cream from the Elemis teen -20's range .. She seems to really love it

anniroc · 13/03/2013 18:02

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish is amazing on all skin. I'm going to get dd some and hopefully she'll avoid the problems I had.

Hopeforever · 13/03/2013 18:06

DS reacts to many skin care products, sadly including the Simple range.

Clinique spot skin range has made a fantastic difference. Expensive, but you can buy a months trial kit.

soaccidentprone · 13/03/2013 18:13

ds2 11 uses this which works well, isn't too expensive, and because it's foam in a pump dispenser it gives you just the right amount.

he has eczema and this is fine.

somewhereaclockisticking · 13/03/2013 19:04

Check the ingredients though because I started using cleansers etc quite young and by the time I was 19 had developed an allergy to lanolin and mineral oil (parafinnium liquidum - sorry spelling crap) Anyway I would avoid all products with those in at a young age.

ThunderInMyHeart · 13/03/2013 21:06

I would try mixing up your own products - often you just need a bit of olive oil and, like you say, some oats. I still do it now - it's cheaper and, I think, better for your skin (in the short and long term).

Too may chemicals in some products might just make it all worse for her.

soap for washing. Clean towels. Whatever simple moisturiser works.

lesson 1 -toner does NOTHING. pores cannot be opened and closed like doors.

Montybojangles · 13/03/2013 22:21

Berts bees have a great range of natural products

I've always used Johnsons baby lotion as a cleanser. It's great. I've got pretty good skin.
